Apteronotus baniwa is a little-known ghost knifefish described in 2013 from the Río Orinoco basin of Venezuela, one of five species split out of the wide-ranging brown ghost, Apteronotus leptorhynchus. Like every member of its family it is essentially blind to the usual senses that matter for a fish in the dark: it swims instead by rippling a single long anal fin forward and back, and it reads its surroundings through a weak electric field generated around its own body, sensing prey, obstacles and other knifefish by the way they distort that field. Its discharge is a fast, steady wave-type signal produced by an organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle — the fastest, most refined electric sense of any knifefish. Named for the Baniwa people whose territory covers its Orinoco type locality, A. baniwa is a data-sparse, essentially unstudied species outside its original taxonomic description, and it is not established in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus baniwa was described by de Santana & Vari in 2013 in a revision of the "brown ghost" species complex, published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society as "Brown ghost electric fishes of the Apteronotus leptorhynchus species-group". That paper split what had long been treated as the single wide-ranging species Apteronotus leptorhynchus into a group of five distinct species on the basis of morphology and biogeography, with the divergence pattern among them read as consistent with the Andean uplift roughly eight million years ago. A. baniwa is one of those five, distinguished by characters detailed in the original description and confirmed from a small type series collected in the Río Orinoco.

The species sits in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Every apteronotid, this species included, carries the electric organ built from modified nerve tissue that sets the family apart within the order and gives it the fastest, highest-frequency discharges of any knifefish, used for electrolocation in the dark and for signalling to other fish. The genus name Apteronotus means "without a fin on the back", for the missing dorsal fin; the species epithet baniwa honours the Baniwa, an indigenous people of the upper Río Orinoco and Río Negro basins whose home territory encompasses the type locality. As with all valid names in this family, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the reference authority.

Morphology

The holotype, an adult male, measured 6 in in total length, with the broader type series running roughly 2–5 in to the end of the anal fin — a modest-sized ghost knifefish by the standards of the genus, well short of the black ghost's eventual half-metre. Like its relatives it has the characteristic apteronotid body plan: a laterally compressed, blade-like form tapering to a slender tail, no dorsal fin, and no conventional tail fin. Movement comes almost entirely from a very long anal fin running along most of the underside, undulated in travelling waves that push the fish forwards or backwards with equal facility.

As a member of the A. leptorhynchus species-group, A. baniwa was distinguished from its four sister species chiefly by proportional and meristic differences documented in the original 2013 description rather than by any dramatic difference in colour or shape; the group as a whole shares the drab, understated dark colouring typical of "brown ghost"-type Apteronotus, in contrast to the strikingly patterned black ghost. The electric organ runs the length of the body beneath the skin, and the skin itself is scaleless and unprotected, as in every gymnotiform.

Habitat

Apteronotus baniwa is known from the Río Orinoco basin of Venezuela; the type locality lies roughly 91 mi east-southeast of San Fernando de Atabapo, in the middle Orinoco. The original description characterises the habitat as tropical freshwater river channels with darkly stained water — the tannin-tinted, low-visibility conditions typical of the Orinoco's blackwater and mixed-water tributaries, where the electric sense does the work that eyes cannot.

Beyond the collecting data behind the original description, little has been published specifically on this species' habitat preferences within the basin. As with its congeners, a reasonable expectation is a fish of flowing river channels rather than still water, sheltering by day among roots, submerged wood or other cover and becoming active after dark. Confirming finer-scale habitat use would need further fieldwork; at present the record is limited to the type series and its associated locality data.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Apteronotus baniwa has been published, and the species' feeding ecology has to be inferred from its family. Ghost knifefishes are nocturnal carnivores that hunt largely by electrolocation, detecting the faint electrical signatures of small invertebrates hidden in sediment, leaf litter or root tangles rather than relying on sight in the dark, turbid water they inhabit. Aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans are the typical prey documented across the genus.

There is no trade or captive-husbandry record for this species to draw feeding observations from, so its diet in the aquarium is untested. Data sparse.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship behaviour in Apteronotus baniwa specifically. What is understood about mating in the genus comes chiefly from laboratory work on its close relative and one-time conspecific, the brown ghost A. leptorhynchus, in which the wave-type electric organ discharge carries information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive readiness, and males and females shift their discharge frequencies in a kind of electrical duet during courtship. Since A. baniwa was only recently split out of that same species complex and shares its wave-type electrogenic system, comparable electric signalling during approach and courtship is plausible, but it has not been documented in this species itself.

Data sparse: no spawning behaviour, pairing pattern or courtship display has been recorded for A. baniwa, and this account does not extend beyond what the genus-level literature supports.

Breeding

As with courtship, no breeding record exists for Apteronotus baniwa. Ghost knifefishes as a group are egg-layers, but successful captive breeding is rare across the genus — most Apteronotidae seen in the trade or in research collections are wild-caught, and where reproduction has been achieved in other species it has generally required large, mature fish, stable warm soft water, and cover such as roots or crevices for the eggs, with no meaningful parental care afterwards.

A. baniwa has no aquarium-trade presence and no reported captive spawning, so its reproductive mode should be considered poorly documented rather than assumed to mirror any particular relative. The honest summary is egg-laying, rarely (if ever) achieved in captivity for this species, with electric-organ signalling likely playing a role in courtship by analogy with its sister species — but unconfirmed.

In the aquarium

Apteronotus baniwa is not an established aquarium fish; it is known only from its type series and taxonomic description, and there is no meaningful husbandry record to draw on. Prospective keepers should not expect availability, and any specimen encountered outside a research context would need to be treated with the caution due an unstudied, scaleless, electrosensory predator rather than assumed to behave exactly like the familiar black ghost.

What can be said follows from its family. Like all Apteronotidae it is scaleless and would be expected to be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and to require reduced doses of copper-based or other harsh medications. As a nocturnal electrolocating predator it would need dim lighting, secure cover such as pipes or root tangles, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey after dark. None of this has been tested for A. baniwa specifically, and captive-bred stock does not exist for the species; this account should not be read as a care guide so much as a statement that one cannot yet be written.

Conservation

Apteronotus baniwa is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting how recently the species was described and how little targeted survey work has followed. It is known only from the Río Orinoco basin in Venezuela, and as with many narrow-range, recently split Neotropical fishes there simply is not yet enough distribution and population data to assign a threat category.

Generic Orinoco basin pressures — habitat alteration, water pollution and the cumulative effects of deforestation in the watershed — would apply to any fish restricted to this system, but no species-specific threat assessment exists for A. baniwa. The most useful conservation statement at present is the honest one the IUCN itself gives: data deficient, in need of further study, not confirmed threatened or secure.
