Apteronotus brasiliensis is a scaleless, blade-bodied ghost knifefish endemic to Brazil's eastern river systems, propelling itself forward and backward on a single long anal fin rather than the usual complement of dorsal, tail and pelvic fins. Like every ghost knifefish it navigates and hunts almost entirely by electrolocation, wrapping itself in a weak, continuous electric field and reading the way nearby objects and animals distort it — a sense that matters most at night, when this nocturnal predator is active in the dark, slow-moving rivers it calls home. It is far less familiar in the hobby than its cousin the black ghost, and much of its biology is still inferred from close relatives rather than documented for the species itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Apteronotus brasiliensis was described by Danish zoologist Johannes Reinhardt in 1852 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, and they bear no relation to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a wholly different order. Within Gymnotiformes, the Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, most refined wave-type discharges in the order.

The genus Apteronotus is best known in the aquarium trade through the black ghost (A. albifrons) and the brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), but it contains a larger number of species that rarely if ever reach hobbyists, and A. brasiliensis is one of these lesser-known members. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and current placement in Apteronotus.

Morphology

Like other ghost knifefishes, A. brasiliensis has the family's signature blade-shaped, laterally compressed body, tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin. Movement comes almost entirely from a long anal fin running along the underside of the body, rippled in travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 11.5 in, noticeably smaller than the black ghost's roughly 19.5 in.

The species is scaleless, a trait shared across the family and one with real consequences for how it must be kept in captivity. Running beneath the skin is the electric organ, paired with sensory pores across the body surface that read the field it generates — the anatomical basis of the electrolocation sense the whole family depends on in dark or turbid water. Detailed external sexual differences are not documented for this species.

Habitat

Apteronotus brasiliensis is a Brazilian endemic, recorded from the São Francisco, Paraná and Parnaíba river basins according to FishBase, with GBIF occurrence records supporting a South American Neotropical range consistent with basin-level endemism rather than a continent-wide distribution like its relative A. albifrons. It is a benthopelagic freshwater fish, living in the water column near the bottom rather than on the substrate itself, in tropical rivers.

Detailed habitat descriptions specific to this species are sparse in the available literature, but the genus as a whole favours slow-moving rivers and streams, often near submerged roots and leaf litter, in warm, soft, acidic to near-neutral water that tends to run dim or tannin-stained. That darkness is exactly where an electric sense earns its keep: with eyes of limited use, A. brasiliensis reads its surroundings, prey and neighbours through the field its electric organ produces.

Feeding

As a nocturnal predator, A. brasiliensis hunts primarily after dark, relying on electrolocation to detect prey that would otherwise be invisible in murky or lightless water. Available sources describe a diet of small invertebrates and small fish, taken from the water column and near the substrate, consistent with the general Apteronotidae pattern of probing, active nocturnal hunting rather than ambush.

In turn the species is itself prey for larger fish, birds and mammals sharing its river habitat — a reminder that, for all its specialised electric sense, it occupies a mid-level position in these Brazilian river food webs rather than being a top predator. Specific dietary studies for A. brasiliensis are limited, and much of the detail available is inferred from the wider genus.

Mating

Courtship in ghost knifefishes is bound up with their electricity. Across Apteronotidae, and specifically documented in the well-studied brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), the wave-type electric organ discharge carries information about a fish's identity, sex and size, and males and females shift the frequency of their discharges toward one another during courtship in what researchers describe as an electrical duet; rivals produce distinctive interruptions, or chirps, when they meet. There is no species-specific behavioural study of courtship in A. brasiliensis, but the genus-level electrocommunication system almost certainly plays the same role here.

Beyond that shared electric signalling, little is documented about pairing behaviour, spawning site selection or courtship display specific to this species — the literature that exists focuses on electrophysiology rather than field or aquarium observation of breeding behaviour.

Breeding

Apteronotus brasiliensis is an egg-layer, following the pattern seen across Apteronotidae, but breeding has not been documented for this species in the aquarium — it is essentially absent from the hobby, and what fish do reach collections are wild-caught. No parental care is documented for the genus generally, and there is no reason to expect A. brasiliensis differs.

Given how rarely even the far more widely kept black ghost knifefish is bred in home aquaria — most trade specimens there are wild-caught or farmed under hormone induction — a reliable breeding account for A. brasiliensis simply does not exist. This is a species better described honestly as data sparse on reproduction than filled in with borrowed detail; the citable angle is the family's electric courtship signalling, not a spawning protocol.

In the aquarium

Apteronotus brasiliensis is essentially unseen in the aquarium hobby, with no established care history to draw on, so guidance here follows the well-documented needs of its genus. Being scaleless, it should be expected to share the family's sensitivity to ammonia, nitrate and copper-based or harsh medications, all of which call for reduced dosing and scrupulous water quality. As a nocturnal electroreceptive predator, it would need a dimly lit tank with secure cover — pipes, caves or root tangles — to retreat into by day, and should not be trusted with fish or invertebrates small enough to be hunted after dark.

Given its smaller adult size relative to the black ghost, at roughly 11.5 in total length, a large aquarium is still warranted but the space demands are somewhat less extreme than for that species. Anyone encountering A. brasiliensis in the trade should treat it as an advanced, poorly documented fish rather than a straightforward community animal, and should assume any specimen offered for sale is wild-caught from its native Brazilian river basins.

Conservation

Apteronotus brasiliensis is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with the most recent assessment dated 15 July 2020. This reflects a range across three separate Brazilian river basins — the São Francisco, Paraná and Parnaíba — rather than the single-river endemism that puts some gymnotiforms at greater risk, though it remains considerably more range-restricted than continent-wide relatives such as the black ghost.

No species-specific threats are documented in the available literature, but river systems across Brazil face ongoing pressure from damming, water abstraction, pollution and deforestation, and basin-endemic fish such as this one are generally more exposed to localised habitat change than wide-ranging species. Its Least Concern status should be read as reflecting current data rather than certainty that all three basin populations are secure.
