Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus eschmeyeri was formally described by de Santana, Maldonado-Ocampo, Severi & Mendes in 2004, in a paper (Zootaxa 410) that revised the trans-Andean species of Apteronotus and showed the group to be more diverse than previously recognised. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish defined by their electric organs and their long, undulating anal fin rather than by any resemblance to more familiar aquarium families.
The species epithet honours William N. Eschmeyer, the ichthyologist behind the Catalog of Fishes, which remains the standing authority for the valid names of this and every other fish on this site. Despite the shared common name, Apteronotus and the other Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship. Within Apteronotidae, A. eschmeyeri sits alongside better-known relatives such as the black ghost (A. albifrons) and brown ghost (A. leptorhynchus), but it is a narrow-range endemic rather than a widespread Amazonian species.
Morphology
The original description places specimens up to about 6.5 in total length, with a laterally compressed, blade-like body typical of the genus — deep through the trunk and tapering to a slender tail, with no dorsal fin and no separate tail fin of the ordinary kind. Distinguishing features noted in the description include blotchy body coloration, a clear pale band running from the chin up to the dorsal mid-saggital electroreceptor organ, and two clear bands encircling the caudal peduncle; the mouth rictus extends past the rear margin of the eye.
As in all Apteronotidae, the electric organ is neurogenic — built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle — which gives the family the fastest, highest-frequency electric organ discharges of any fish group, a continuous wave-type signal reported to exceed 1,000 Hz in relatives of this species. The skin is scaleless, a trait shared across the genus that matters for husbandry wherever this fish is kept. Sensory pores covering the head and body read the electric field the organ produces, giving the species its electrolocation sense in place of reliance on vision.
Habitat
Apteronotus eschmeyeri is endemic to the Magdalena River basin of Colombia, recorded specifically from the Río Bogotá and Río Luisa drainages — trans-Andean waters that drain toward the Caribbean rather than into the Amazon or Orinoco systems most gymnotiforms belong to. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic in slow-flowing, high-altitude fresh water, a habitat distinct from the fast lowland channels many Apteronotus species favour.
As with its relatives, the value of an electric sense in this setting is that it works where eyesight does not: slow, often turbid Andean-foothill water gives an electroreceptive predator every advantage over one relying on sight alone. No further detail on the specific temperature, pH or seasonal conditions of the Magdalena populations was found in the available sources, so this account does not speculate beyond what the family's general ecology and the basin's character suggest.
Feeding
No diet-specific data for Apteronotus eschmeyeri was found in the available sources. It is reasonable to expect a broadly similar electric-signalling courtship in this species as a family trait, but that inference should not be mistaken for direct evidence about A. eschmeyeri.
Breeding
There is no documented breeding record for Apteronotus eschmeyeri, in the wild or in captivity — unsurprising for a narrow-range Andean endemic that is essentially unknown to the aquarium trade. Ghost knifefishes generally are egg-layers that scatter eggs among roots, plants or other cover, and are only rarely bred even in aquaria when the more commonly kept species like the black ghost are involved; most trade individuals of those species are wild-caught or farm-bred under hormone induction rather than spawned by hobbyists. For A. eschmeyeri specifically, the honest position is that breeding biology is essentially undocumented. Data sparse.

Apteronotus eschmeyeri is not an established aquarium fish; it does not appear to be traded in any meaningful way, and this account cannot responsibly extend care guidance from the black ghost or brown ghost onto a fish whose captive requirements have not been documented. What can be said, as a matter of family biology that would apply to any Apteronotus in captivity, is that these are scaleless fish sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, and that as nocturnal electroreceptive predators they need dim lighting, secure cover to retreat into by day, and are unlikely to be safe with bite-size tankmates.
Given how little is documented about this species specifically, anyone encountering it — most likely only in the context of Colombian ichthyological survey work rather than the hobby — should treat it as a scientifically interesting, poorly known Andean endemic rather than as a candidate for home aquaria.
Conservation
Apteronotus eschmeyeri is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the assessment dated October 9, 2014. The listing reflects the absence of any major documented threat to the species at assessment time, even though it is a narrow-range endemic restricted to the Magdalena basin rather than a fish with the continent-wide distribution of some Apteronotidae.
Narrow-range endemism is nonetheless the trait that tends to make single-basin gymnotiforms vulnerable over time, since a species confined to one river system has nowhere to retreat if that system is degraded. The Magdalena basin is one of Colombia's most heavily used river systems, subject to damming, pollution and land-use change, so continued monitoring of a species with this restricted a range would be prudent even though its current status is not one of concern.
