Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is a small, soft-bodied electric knifefish of Central and north-western South American streams, one of the few gymnotiforms to have successfully crossed the land bridge into Lower Central America. Like its relatives it is essentially blind to the task of finding food or a mate in the dark — instead it wraps itself in a weak, self-generated electric field and reads the way that field is disturbed by rocks, roots, prey and other fish, a sense called electrolocation. Its discharge is a low-voltage, biphasic PULSE, not the smooth wave of a ghost knifefish, and in Brachyhypopomus that pulse doubles as a signature used to recognise sex and species in the dark. It swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, has no dorsal fin, and is completely scaleless. Rarely offered in the aquarium trade, it is a quiet, retiring fish of leaf litter and slow, vegetated water rather than a display centrepiece.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyhypopomus occidentalis was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1914 and belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual branch of them, set apart by an electric organ and by a body plan built around a single long anal fin rather than a tail fin or dorsal fin. The order is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a completely different lineage; the resemblance between the two groups is convergent, not a sign of kinship.

Within Gymnotiformes, the Hypopomidae are the bluntnose knifefishes, a family of small, cryptic, nocturnal species that produce pulse-type electric organ discharges rather than the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae). The genus Brachyhypopomus is, per the cited phylogenetic literature, one of the better-studied gymnotiform genera precisely because several of its species — including B. occidentalis — have become useful models for research into electric-signal evolution. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the species epithet occidentalis, Latin for "western," reflects its distribution at the western edge of the genus's range.

Morphology

Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is a small, slender, laterally compressed knifefish reaching up to about 7 in in total length. Like other bluntnose knifefishes it has a blunt, rounded snout rather than the elongated, tube-like snout of the sand knifefishes (Rhamphichthys, Gymnorhamphichthys), and its body is soft-fleshed and flexible rather than rigid. There is no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin running along most of the underside of the body, undulating in travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease.

The species is entirely scaleless, its skin thin and exposed, which — as in other gymnotiforms — makes it sensitive to poor water quality and to certain medications. Running the length of the body is the electric organ, which in this species produces a low-voltage, biphasic pulse-type discharge, and the skin carries the electroreceptor pores that read the resulting field. Genomic and physiological work on B. occidentalis has documented clear sexual dimorphism: males grow measurably longer and heavier than females, and the two sexes can also be distinguished by differences in the electric organ discharge itself, which the fish appears to modulate during social and reproductive encounters.

Habitat

Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is found in Central America and the extreme north-west of South America, recorded from the Magdalena, Atrato and Catatumbo river systems and from Pacific-slope drainages running from Costa Rica and Panama's Darién region north toward the Sixaola River, as well as the Lake Maracaibo basin. This range makes it one of the few Gymnotiformes to have successfully colonised Lower Central America, crossing what for most South American electric fish has been a hard biogeographic boundary.

It is a benthopelagic fish of shallow, calm streams and brooks with abundant vegetation, generally at low elevations of roughly 1 to 60 metres, in warm water around 75–82 °F. Like other bluntnose knifefishes it favours slow-flowing water with leaf litter, root tangles and dense marginal plants to hide among by day, relying at night on its electric sense — rather than eyesight — to navigate and find food in water where visibility is often poor.

Feeding

FishBase records a diet centred on aquatic insects, particularly dipteran (fly) larvae, with a trophic level estimate of about 3.1, consistent with a mid-level invertebrate predator rather than a fish-eater. As in other bluntnose knifefishes, feeding is almost certainly nocturnal and guided largely by electrolocation: the fish detects the faint electrical signature of small prey hidden in sediment, leaf litter or among roots, where sight would be of little use in dark or turbid water.

In the aquarium, bluntnose knifefishes of this kind are generally kept on small meaty foods — bloodworm, blackworm, brine shrimp and similar frozen or live invertebrate fare — offered after dark when the fish becomes active. There is no aquarium-specific feeding data for B. occidentalis in the cited sources, so care recommendations here follow the pattern documented for the wider genus and family rather than observations of this species in captivity.

Mating

Courtship and mate recognition in Brachyhypopomus occidentalis are closely tied to its electric organ discharge. Research on the species has found that its pulse-type discharge is rapidly modulated in amplitude and duration, and that this modulation plays a role in sexual communication and mate selection — in effect, the fish's electric signal functions as both an identity badge and a courtship display in the dark. The pronounced sexual dimorphism in body size between males and females, documented in genomic studies of the species, likely interacts with these electric signals during pairing, though the precise sequence of courtship behaviour has not been described in the cited literature.

Beyond the electric-signalling angle, spawning behaviour itself is not well documented for this species. As in most Hypopomidae, courtship most likely combines an approach guided by electrolocation with exchanges of pulse discharges between prospective mates, but the cited sources do not describe nest-building, pairing duration or spawning site selection in the wild.

Breeding

In the aquarium

Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is rarely if ever seen in the ornamental trade and there are no aquarium-specific husbandry accounts in the cited sources; care guidance here is extrapolated from its wild ecology and from the general requirements of small bluntnose and sand knifefishes. It is a small, soft-bodied, nocturnal predator that would be expected to do best in a dimly lit tank with a soft substrate, plenty of leaf litter, roots or fine plants to hide in by day, and warm, gently moving water around 75–82 °F matching its native streams.

As a scaleless fish, it should be treated with the same caution given to other gymnotiforms regarding water quality and medication: it is likely to be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and copper-based treatments should be avoided, with other medications used at reduced doses. Because so little is documented about its temperament in captivity, tankmates should be chosen conservatively — nothing small enough to be hunted at night, and nothing that would out-compete a small, retiring fish for food or shelter. Given how rarely this species is available, most aquarists interested in this ecological niche are more likely to encounter other bluntnose or sand knifefishes than this particular species.

Conservation

Brachyhypopomus occidentalis is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, an assessment carried out on 22 October 2019. This reflects its comparatively wide distribution across several river systems spanning Central America and the northern Andean foothills, and its status as one of relatively few gymnotiforms to have established itself successfully outside South America proper.

As with many small, widely distributed Neotropical stream fish, the species is not currently considered to be under significant threat at the range-wide level, though the cited sources do not detail localised pressures on individual populations. Its reliance on vegetated, slow-flowing streams means that habitat degradation, deforestation and pollution in the Magdalena, Atrato, Catatumbo and Pacific-slope drainages it inhabits remain the general categories of concern for stream fish in this region, even though none are singled out as acute threats to this species specifically in the available literature.
