Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus leptorhynchus was described by Ellis in 1912 and belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes of tropical South America. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin that provides essentially all of their propulsion, and they are only distantly related to the other fish families kept in home aquaria.
Within the order, Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which lets them produce a fast, continuous, high-frequency wave-type discharge — the most refined electrosensory signal of any knifefish group. The genus Apteronotus includes the two ghost knifefishes most familiar to aquarists, the black ghost (A. albifrons) and this species, the brown ghost, alongside a number of poorly known relatives from Amazonian channels. Despite the shared common name, these fish are unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
The brown ghost is built on the same plan as the black ghost but is smaller and far less strikingly marked: a laterally compressed, blade-shaped body in olive-brown to grey tones, tapering to a slender tail, without the bold white saddle and blaze of its cousin. FishBase records a maximum length of about 10.5 in, roughly half the size the black ghost eventually reaches, which makes it a more realistically sized aquarium animal.
As in the rest of the family there is no dorsal fin and no conventional tail fin; movement comes from an elongated anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that carry the fish forward or backward with equal facility. The skin is scaleless and dotted with electroreceptor pores, and the electric organ runs along much of the body beneath it. Sex is not visible externally in the ordinary sense, but this species is the one in which the link between the electric signal and sex has been worked out in detail: males typically discharge above roughly 750 Hz and females below it, and in males that frequency also tracks social dominance.
Habitat
The brown ghost is known from the Guianas, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela, including the Catatumbo River basin — a broad swath of tropical South American freshwater. It is a benthopelagic fish of flowing water, sheltering by day under logs, roots, leaf litter and sunken stones and becoming more broadly active after dark.
Field studies of habitat choice in this species found a clear preference for cover: given a choice, brown ghosts favour beds of aquatic plants first, then stacked stones, then isolated stones, and they use that cover to rest through the day even though they are not strictly confined to night-time activity — some individuals show habitat-switching and exploration during daylight hours too. Recorded water conditions include a temperature around 75–79 °F and conductivity near 320 μS/cm, consistent with the soft, mineral-modest water typical of Amazonian tributaries. As in the rest of the family, this is a fish for which low light and secure cover are not decoration but a basic habitat requirement — its electric sense, not its eyes, is what does the navigating in these turbid, shaded channels.
Feeding
The brown ghost hunts largely by electrolocation, sweeping its electric field over the substrate and surrounding cover to detect the faint electrical signatures of hidden prey rather than relying on vision. Its diet in the wild centres on small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and similar prey — picked out of sediment, leaf litter and root tangles, much as in the black ghost, though the brown ghost's smaller size keeps it working over correspondingly smaller prey.
In the aquarium it takes standard meaty foods: bloodworm, chopped or whole blackworm, brine shrimp and comparable frozen fare, and it feeds most readily once the tank has settled into its more active evening and night-time period. Its habitat-switching behaviour — resting under cover by day but not strictly nocturnal — means it can also be coaxed to feed at less anti-social hours than a purely nocturnal fish, though as with all ghost knifefish, anything small enough to be treated as prey is at risk after dark.
Mating
Courtship in the brown ghost is, more than in almost any other aquarium fish, a matter of electricity. This is the species in which the link between electric organ discharge and sex has been established most thoroughly: males and females run their wave-type discharges at characteristically different frequencies, and that frequency is not fixed — it is sensitive to sex hormones and shifts with social context, rising and falling as fish interact. During courtship, males and females modulate their discharge frequency toward one another and produce transient signal features such as chirps, an electrical exchange that functions alongside physical approach as a kind of duet, communicating identity, sex and readiness in water too dark or turbid for visual courtship to work.
Rivalry plays out the same way: in males, discharge frequency also tracks dominance, so an encounter between two males carries information in the electric channel before it ever becomes a physical contest. Much of what is confidently known about gymnotiform courtship comes from exactly this kind of electrophysiological study of A. leptorhynchus, which has made it one of the best-understood species in the order for this trait, even though actual spawning behaviour is comparatively little documented outside the laboratory.
Breeding
The brown ghost is an egg-layer, and FishBase records eggs of roughly 0.5 in diameter laid among crevices, with larvae hatching around day four and beginning to feed by around day eleven under study conditions — useful benchmarks, but they come from research settings rather than routine hobbyist breeding. As with the rest of the family, spawning in home aquaria is rare, and most fish in the trade are wild-caught or produced by specialist and research facilities rather than bred incidentally by aquarists.
No substantial parental care is documented after spawning; eggs are scattered among cover and left. For the aquarist the honest summary is the same as for its relatives: this is a fish to keep well, not one to plan to breed, and the citable, distinctive story is the electric courtship signalling described above rather than a reliable home breeding protocol.
In the aquarium
The brown ghost asks for the same essentials as the rest of the ghost knifefishes, at a more forgiving scale given its smaller adult size of under 12 in. It needs a long-established, dimly lit aquarium with generous cover — plants, stacked rock, driftwood roots or a length of wide pipe — because it rests under cover by day and becomes confidently active as light drops, mirroring its behaviour in the wild. Given the choice, it uses plant cover over bare rock, so a tank with real planting suits it well.
Being scaleless, it shares its family's sensitivity to water quality and medication: copper-based and formalin-based treatments are poorly tolerated and often need reduced dosing, and stable, mature filtration with low ammonia and nitrate is essential in the warm, soft, near-neutral water it prefers. Tankmates should be peaceful, not fin-nippy, and not small enough to be treated as prey after dark. It is a quieter, less flashy fish than the black ghost, but its role as one of the most intensively studied fish in neuroscience — prized for negligible measurable brain aging in adulthood, making it a standing model for neural regeneration research — gives it a genuine claim to interest beyond its looks.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List currently assesses Apteronotus leptorhynchus as Endangered (EN), assessed in 2022 under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), which point to a restricted range and continuing decline in the extent or quality of its habitat. That is a notably more serious status than its wide-ranging cousin the black ghost, and it reflects the pressures on the smaller river systems and tributaries across its range in the Guianas, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela — habitat alteration, water quality decline and related pressures on Amazonian and Orinoco-basin waterways.
For the hobby the implication is straightforward: this is not a species to source carelessly. Aquarists keeping or considering the brown ghost should look for captive-bred or research-surplus stock where available, avoid contributing to unnecessary wild collection pressure, and treat the species' importance to neuroscience as one more reason its wild populations are worth protecting rather than a substitute for doing so.
