Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus quilombola was described in 2021 by Peixoto, Datovo, Menezes and Santana and placed in the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all gymnotiforms it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by the fin arrangement of a typical teleost. Within Apteronotidae, the electric organ is built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving the family the fastest, highest-frequency wave-type discharges of any knifefish group.
The species epithet quilombola honors the quilombolas, the Afro-Brazilian communities descended from escaped-slave settlements (quilombos) who live along the Rio Trombetas near the type locality. The type series comes from Cachoeira Porteira, a waterfall on the Rio Trombetas, and the species is so far known from only two localities in that drainage — the Rios Mapuera and Trombetas. As with other New-World knifefishes, A. quilombola is unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance in body shape is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
As a ghost knifefish, Apteronotus quilombola shares its genus's blade-like, laterally compressed body, lack of a dorsal fin, and near-absence of a distinct tail fin — locomotion instead comes from a very long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal control. The species was distinguished from its congeners in its original description by a suite of fine anatomical characters: a notably low number of anal-fin rays (117–125), a reduced number of branchiostegal rays (three), and an anus positioned unusually far forward on the body compared with related species. The original description included micro-CT scanning of the skeleton to resolve these differences precisely.
Like other members of the family it is scaleless, and it carries the electric organ running along the body together with the electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it produces. Specific measurements of maximum length are not available in accessible sources — this is a very recently described species and detailed morphometric data beyond the diagnostic characters above have not been widely published.
Habitat
Apteronotus quilombola is endemic to the Rio Trombetas drainage, a Rio Amazonas tributary in Pará, Brazil, and is known from only two recorded localities: the Rios Mapuera and Trombetas, including the type locality at the Cachoeira Porteira waterfall. The description notes it inhabits high-energy river environments — fast, turbulent stretches associated with the falls and rapids of the Trombetas system, rather than slow backwaters.
No site-specific temperature or pH readings for this species have been published in accessible sources, but Amazon basin waters in this region, and the tolerances documented in related Apteronotidae, point to warm (roughly 23–28 degrees Celsius), soft, and moderately acidic conditions typical of blackwater and clearwater Amazonian tributaries. As in other ghost knifefishes, low light and turbid or tannin-stained water likely suit its electric sense far better than clear, brightly lit habitat, though this has not been directly documented for A. quilombola.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Apteronotus quilombola have not been published. Based on the feeding ecology documented across the genus, ghost knifefishes are nocturnal carnivores that hunt small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — locating prey largely through electrolocation rather than eyesight, probing sediment and cover after dark. There is no reason from the available anatomy to expect A. quilombola to differ from this general pattern, but no direct observations of its feeding behavior in the wild have been recorded.
As a fish essentially absent from the aquarium trade, there is no husbandry-derived feeding record either. Any statement about diet beyond the family-wide pattern would be speculation not supported by the current literature.
Mating
No courtship or mating behavior specific to Apteronotus quilombola has been documented. Across Apteronotidae generally, the wave-type electric organ discharge functions as a social signal as well as a sensing tool, carrying information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state; in well-studied relatives such as the brown ghost knifefish, males and females shift discharge frequency during courtship encounters. It is reasonable to expect a similar electric-signalling component to courtship in this species, given its shared electrogenic system, but this is inference from the family rather than a direct observation of A. quilombola.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Apteronotus quilombola is undocumented. Ghost knifefishes as a group are egg-layers that spawn among cover such as roots and crevices, with no substantial parental care recorded in the family, and are only rarely bred even in captivity — most trade individuals of the well-known species are wild-caught or produced on farms under hormone induction rather than bred naturally in tanks. Given that A. quilombola is a narrow-range species known from only two localities and essentially unknown to the aquarium trade, there is no captive breeding record at all, and its reproductive biology in the wild remains unstudied. Data sparse; nothing here should be taken as established fact beyond the family-wide pattern.

Apteronotus quilombola is not a species found in the aquarium trade. It was described from a narrow range in the Rio Trombetas system in 2021, is known from only two localities, and there is no evidence of any collection or export for the hobby. Nothing here should be read as husbandry guidance for this specific species.
For context, the family it belongs to shares several traits that would matter if it were ever kept: ghost knifefishes are scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and copper-based or harsh medications; they are nocturnal predators needing dim conditions and secure cover; and larger species in the genus require far more space than casual buyers expect. None of that is a substitute for real data on this species, which does not yet exist.
Conservation
Apteronotus quilombola has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is best described as Data Deficient rather than assigned a specific threat category. The species is known from only two localities in the Rio Trombetas drainage of Pará, Brazil — a narrow range that, combined with its apparent rarity, is flagged in the taxonomic literature as a reason for conservation concern even without a formal assessment.
The Rio Trombetas basin faces the pressures common to Amazonian tributaries with hydropower development and mining activity nearby, though no study has specifically quantified threats to this species. As with many recently described, narrow-range gymnotiforms, the immediate conservation priority is simply further survey work to establish how restricted its true range and population actually are before its status can be properly assessed.
