Brachyhypopomus cunia is a small, soft-bodied bluntnose knifefish from the lower río Madeira in Rondônia, Brazil, one of fifteen new Brachyhypopomus species described together in a 2017 taxonomic revision of the genus. Like every member of the order Gymnotiformes, it is a weakly electric fish: it generates a pulsed, low-voltage electric field around its scaleless, blade-shaped body and reads the way that field is disturbed by objects, prey and other knifefish, an electrolocation sense that stands in for eyesight in the dark, tannin-stained floodplain waters it calls home. It swims by rippling a single long fin beneath the body rather than beating a tail, and can glide backward as easily as forward. Almost nothing about this species has been studied beyond its original description — it is essentially unknown to the aquarium trade and, for now, a fish defined by a museum jar and a stretch of Amazonian floodplain rather than by any hobbyist's tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyhypopomus cunia was formally described in 2017 by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell and Lovejoy as one of fifteen new species erected in a single comprehensive revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus, published in the run-up to that date in the journal Zootaxa and summarized in the PLOS ONE-linked phylogenetic work on the group. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae — the bluntnose, grass and leaf knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication, and the group is defined anatomically by a single long anal fin that replaces the normal fin arrangement of most bony fishes.

Within the order, Hypopomidae are set apart from their sister family Rhamphichthyidae (the sand knifefishes) by a blunt, short snout rather than a long tubular one, and by the total absence of teeth on the oral jaws. Molecular data — RAG2 and cytochrome b sequences — placed B. cunia as a phylogenetically distinct lineage during the 2017 revision, distinguishing it from superficially similar congeners that had previously been lumped together. The species name honors its type locality, lago Cuniã, a floodplain lake on the lower río Madeira. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name; despite the shared common name "knifefish", Brachyhypopomus and its Gymnotiform relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order and only resemble them by convergent body shape.

Morphology

Brachyhypopomus is a genus of soft-bodied, laterally compressed knifefish with a blunt, rounded snout — the feature that gives the group its common name and distinguishes it at a glance from the long-snouted sand knifefishes of the related family Rhamphichthyidae. Species in the genus span roughly 4.5–18 in total length depending on species, and the original description of B. cunia notes cryptic, understated pigmentation typical of the genus rather than any bold pattern. As in all Gymnotiformes, there is no dorsal fin and no proper tail fin; locomotion comes from a single long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease while holding its body rigid — useful for a fish that relies on a stable electric field to sense its surroundings.

The skin is entirely scaleless, a trait shared across the order and one with real consequences for husbandry (see In the aquarium). Running along the body is the electric organ that generates the fish's weak EOD, and the skin carries the electroreceptor pores that read the resulting field — the sensory system this small, nocturnal, cryptically patterned fish depends on far more than eyesight in the dim, structurally complex habitats it occupies.

Habitat

The type locality of Brachyhypopomus cunia is lago Cuniã, a floodplain lake on the lower río Madeira in Rondônia, Brazil, part of the Amazon drainage — placing the species firmly within the humid Neotropics that Hypopomidae as a family occupy, a range that runs from the Río de la Plata in Argentina north to the Río Tuira in Panama, with the Amazon basin as its center of diversity. As is typical for the genus, B. cunia is a fish of static or slow-flowing freshwater habitats: river edges, streams, seasonal floodplains and swamps, rather than open, fast-flowing channels.

Brachyhypopomus species as a group show real physiological range within that lentic niche — some occupy well-oxygenated water while others live in poorly oxygenated backwaters and have evolved larger gills or air-gulping behavior to cope, and some occupy floating meadows of aquatic grass along the Amazon's margins. Which of these micro-habitats B. cunia itself favors beyond its floodplain-lake type locality is not documented in the available literature; the species is known essentially from its original description rather than from subsequent ecological fieldwork.

Feeding

Brachyhypopomus cunia is described in its original account as a nocturnal predator of small aquatic invertebrates, consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the bluntnose and sand knifefishes generally. Like other Gymnotiformes, it is presumed to hunt largely by electrolocation, detecting the faint electrical signatures of prey hidden in leaf litter, sediment or root tangles in water too dark or turbid for vision to be much use — a hunting strategy shared with its better-studied relatives such as the black ghost knifefish, though it has not been directly documented for this species through diet analysis or field observation.

No specific prey list or feeding-behavior study exists for B. cunia in the sources available; what can be said with confidence is limited to the general pattern for its genus and family — small invertebrates, taken at night, in still or slow water among cover.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behavior in Brachyhypopomus cunia have not been documented; the species is known from taxonomic description rather than behavioral study. Across the Gymnotiformes generally, the electric organ discharge functions as more than a sensory tool — it carries information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state, and courtship in well-studied genera plays out partly as an exchange of species- and sex-specific electric signals in the dark, alongside physical approach. Brachyhypopomus and its Hypopomidae relatives are pulse-type dischargers, producing discrete electric pulses rather than the continuous wave signal of the ghost knifefishes, and that pulse pattern is expected to carry the same kind of social and sexual information, though this has not been specifically studied in B. cunia.

Given the near-total absence of behavioral data for this species, any account of its courtship beyond this general, family-level expectation would be speculation rather than documented fact.

Breeding

Reproduction in Brachyhypopomus cunia is poorly documented, as it is across most of the genus and family. Where breeding has been studied in related Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, these are small egg-layers that scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, roots or sand, generally timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward — a pattern typical of small, short-lived, cryptic Neotropical fish rather than the guarded broods seen in cichlids. There is no record of B. cunia being bred, or even reliably kept, in captivity.

Given the total absence of aquarium or captive-breeding records for this species, the honest position is that its breeding biology is essentially unknown beyond what can be inferred from its close relatives, and any more specific claim would not be traceable to a real source.

In the aquarium

Brachyhypopomus cunia does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade; it was described in 2017 from Brazilian floodplain habitat and the sources available document its taxonomy and habitat rather than any history of hobbyist care. Should it ever appear, the general husbandry principles for small Hypopomidae would apply: warm, soft, dimly lit, slow-moving or still water reflecting its floodplain-lake and swamp habitat, generous cover (leaf litter, roots, fine-leaved plants) to replace the structure it hides in by day, and tankmates that will not out-compete or harass a small, nocturnal, non-aggressive fish.

As with all Gymnotiformes, the species is scaleless and should be assumed sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which typically need to be dosed with caution or avoided outright in scaleless fish. Given how little is documented, this species is best treated as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish to plan a tank around.

Conservation

Brachyhypopomus cunia is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN. This reflects, in general, the pattern seen across much of the genus — many Brachyhypopomus species occupy floodplain and swamp habitat across a broad swath of the Amazon basin and are not currently considered at elevated risk — though narrow-range, single-basin species in this genus are the ones worth watching as Amazonian floodplains face pressure from deforestation, damming and pollution.

B. cunia's type locality, lago Cuniã on the lower río Madeira, sits in a stretch of the Amazon that has seen substantial hydroelectric development in recent decades; whether that has any specific bearing on this particular species is not addressed in the available literature, and no elevated threat has been documented for it specifically.
