Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus flavipomus was described by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell & Lovejoy in 2017 as part of a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus published in Neotropical Ichthyology, which added fifteen new species at once. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish defined by their electric organs and their long, undulating anal fin rather than by any resemblance to typical fish body plans. The holotype (MCP 45366) was collected from the Mamirauá Reserve, in the rio Solimões–rio Japurá floodplain of Amazonas, Brazil, which remains the species' type locality.
The order name Gymnotiformes is often loosely rendered as "knifefishes", but Brachyhypopomus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus): those are bonytongues in a different order entirely, and the similarity in silhouette is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name Brachyhypopomus flavipomus.
Morphology
Like other Hypopomidae, B. flavipomus has the classic bluntnose knifefish shape: a soft, laterally compressed body tapering to a fine tip, no dorsal fin, no separate tail fin, and a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside that provides essentially all of its propulsion, letting the fish move forward and backward with equal ease. The skin is entirely without scales. Females reach a documented maximum of about 4.5 in total length, the largest size reported for the species by FishBase.
The feature that distinguishes B. flavipomus from its many close relatives, and the source of its species name, is a pair of conspicuous patches of shiny yellow guanine — visible only in live specimens — on the operculum (gill cover) and just anterior to the base of the pectoral fin. Running the length of the body is the electric organ, and the skin carries the sensory pores used to read the electric field it produces. As in other Hypopomidae, the discharge is pulse-type: brief pulses roughly 0.5–5 milliseconds long with one to four alternating-polarity phases, repeated at a rate that can range from about 1 to 110 Hz depending on activity and context, rather than the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes.
Habitat
Brachyhypopomus flavipomus is known from the upper-central Amazon basin, with records spanning Brazil, Colombia and Peru. The type locality — the Mamirauá Reserve on the Solimões–Japurá floodplain — is a seasonally flooded várzea landscape, and the genus as a whole favours lentic or slow-flowing water: swamps, backwaters and floodplain habitats rather than fast open channels, often among submerged leaf litter, roots and flooded vegetation.
As with all Hypopomidae, this is a fish of dark, structurally complex water where vision is of limited use. It is described as cryptically pigmented and nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden in cover and becoming active after dark, when its electric sense — rather than its eyes — does the work of locating food and avoiding obstacles.
Feeding
Brachyhypopomus flavipomus is a nocturnal predator of small aquatic invertebrates, consistent with the diet described across the genus: insect larvae, worms and other small invertebrates picked out of leaf litter and sediment after dark. Prey is located largely by electrolocation, the fish reading distortions in its own weak electric field caused by nearby animals, a technique especially valuable in the dim, often turbid floodplain water it inhabits.
Specific dietary data for this species beyond the general pattern for Hypopomidae has not been documented; as a recently described species, much of its natural history has not been separately studied.
Mating
Courtship in Brachyhypopomus, as in other pulse-type gymnotiforms, is thought to be mediated in part through the electric organ discharge, which carries information on species identity and sex and functions in electrocommunication as well as electrolocation. Beyond this general pattern established for the genus, courtship behaviour specific to B. flavipomus has not been documented.
Breeding
Breeding in Brachyhypopomus flavipomus is poorly documented, consistent with the genus as a whole, whose reproduction has not been closely studied in the wild or in captivity. Where breeding is understood in related Hypopomidae, it is egg-laying, with eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sediment rather than guarded in a nest, and little to no parental care afterward. There is no record of this species being bred in aquaria. Given how recently it was described, and the general data gap around Brachyhypopomus reproduction, this is a case where saying less is more honest than inventing a protocol.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus flavipomus is not established in the aquarium trade, and there is no meaningful hobbyist track record for the species specifically. Its small size (to under 4.5 in) and delicate, cryptic habits put it in line with other bluntnose knifefishes, which are generally kept as peaceful, retiring fish for soft, dimly lit, sand- or leaf-litter-bottomed tanks rather than as showpiece animals.
Any fishkeeper encountering this species should apply the same precautions that matter for all Gymnotiformes: it is scaleless and therefore sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or dosed at reduced strength. As a nocturnal predator it needs cover to retreat into by day and is not a safe companion for anything small enough to be eaten after dark. Given the lack of husbandry data, captive-bred stock is not a realistic option, and any specimen in the trade would almost certainly be a wild-caught rarity.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus flavipomus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is treated here as Data Deficient pending evaluation. It is known from a handful of localities across Brazil, Colombia and Peru in the Amazon basin, and as with many recently described gymnotiforms there is not yet enough distributional or population data to judge its conservation status with confidence.
Species tied to Amazonian floodplain habitats such as the Mamirauá várzea can be affected by broader regional pressures — deforestation, altered flood regimes and habitat degradation — but no species-specific threat has been documented for B. flavipomus, and no conservation status should be overstated in the absence of that data.
