Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus was described in 1990 by Hopkins, Comfort, Bastian & Bass, with its type locality in the Grand Pripris swamp near Kourou, French Guiana. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every member of this order it is defined less by outward shape than by an internal electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin used for locomotion; the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) share only the common name and are unrelated, placed in a completely different order of bony fishes.
The genus Brachyhypopomus is large and still being actively revised, with a number of species described only in the last few decades from material collected across the lowland freshwaters of South America, from southern Costa Rica down to Uruguay. B. pinnicaudatus was one of the earlier species separated out on the basis of its distinctive male tail filament and its electric organ discharge waveform, at a time when the systematics of Brachyhypopomus depended heavily on electrophysiology as well as morphology. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; the species is not known to have any variant forms or subspecies in current use.
Morphology
Like other bluntnose knifefishes, Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus has a soft, elongated, laterally compressed body, a short blunt head, and no dorsal or proper caudal fin — propulsion comes from a long anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The skin is scaleless and the overall pigmentation is cryptic, a dull brownish tone suited to blending into leaf litter and root tangles rather than to display.
The species' defining feature is the male's tail: during the breeding season, males of B. pinnicaudatus develop a hypertrophied, feather-shaped extension of the caudal region, a sexually dimorphic structure not seen in females and referenced directly in the specific epithet pinnicaudatus. FishBase records a maximum total length of 7.5 in for males and unsexed individuals. Running the length of the body is the electric organ, and the skin carries the sensory pores used to read the resulting field — in this species the discharge is pulse-type, each pulse lasting roughly 0.5–5 milliseconds and repeating at rates from about 1 to 110 Hz, a modest, low-duty-cycle signal typical of the family rather than the fast, continuous wave discharge of the ghost knifefishes.
Habitat
Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus is recorded from the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná–Paraguay river systems, with its type locality in French Guiana near Kourou. Within the genus, this places it among the more broadly distributed Brachyhypopomus rather than a single-river endemic, though it remains a species known mostly from scattered lowland localities rather than dense sampling across its full range.
It favours still or very slow-moving water — stagnant pools, swamps and floodplain margins with low conductivity and often low oxygen, among emergent and floating vegetation and leaf litter. Like a number of its relatives it is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation that lets it persist in the hypoxic to anoxic conditions typical of these blackwater habitats. It is benthopelagic and largely nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden among vegetation and root mats and becoming active as darkness falls, when its electric sense takes over from vision in water that is often too dark or tannin-stained for sight to be of much use.
Feeding
As with other small Hypopomidae, B. pinnicaudatus is a nocturnal predator of aquatic invertebrates, working through leaf litter and root tangles after dark and using its electric sense to detect prey that vision could not find in such dark, still water. Diet has not been itemised in detail for this species specifically, but the genus as a whole takes small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and similar prey — located by electrolocation rather than sight or smell.
Detailed feeding studies for this exact species are not available, and nothing here should be extrapolated beyond what is documented for the genus; specific gut-content or prey-preference data for B. pinnicaudatus is data sparse.
Mating
Courtship in Brachyhypopomus, as in other pulse-type gymnotiforms, is bound up with the electric organ discharge: each individual's pulse waveform and repetition rate carry information about identity, sex and condition, and in this genus males undergo a further, highly visible seasonal change — the growth of the feather-shaped caudal filament in B. pinnicaudatus — that likely functions alongside the electric signal in signalling breeding readiness. Related work on the genus (documented in detail for the congener B. gauderio) shows breeding tied to the wet season, with courtship and spawning taking place around dense floating vegetation such as Pistia and Salvinia in dark, slow-moving, muddy-bottomed water.
The specific courtship sequence — approach, discharge exchange, spawning site selection — has not been documented in the literature for B. pinnicaudatus itself, and should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed to mirror its relatives exactly.
Breeding
Breeding biology for B. pinnicaudatus specifically is poorly documented; what is known comes largely by analogy with the better-studied congener B. gauderio, in which Hypopomidae are egg-layers and fractional spawners — females release eggs in multiple batches across a breeding season rather than a single clutch — timed to the wet season (spring and summer in the Neotropics). Spawning in that species takes place among dense floating and emergent vegetation, with average fecundity around 589 eggs per female, and males guard the developing larvae under cover of the vegetation, providing a degree of parental care rather than abandoning the clutch outright.
Whether B. pinnicaudatus follows this pattern precisely has not been confirmed by direct observation, and given how recently many Brachyhypopomus species have been described and how few have been studied in captivity, the honest position is that its breeding remains largely undocumented. There is no known aquarium breeding record for this species.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus is essentially absent from the aquarium trade; it is a small, delicate, poorly known species rather than a hobby staple, and almost nothing has been written about keeping it specifically. What follows is extrapolated from the needs of the genus and family, not from a body of aquarist experience with this species.
Were it kept, it would need warm, soft, dimly lit, tannin-stained water reflecting its stagnant swamp habitat, a sand or fine substrate, and dense cover of roots, leaf litter or floating plants to hide in by day — bright, bare tanks suit it poorly. Being scaleless, it would be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and would need reduced doses of copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, exactly as with the larger, better-known ghost knifefishes. As a small nocturnal predator it should not be trusted with anything bite-sized, and given how little is known of its needs, captive husbandry should be considered experimental rather than routine.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It is known from a broad span of lowland South American drainages — the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná–Paraguay systems — consistent with a distribution wide enough to support that listing.
Its stagnant swamp and floodplain habitats across the Guianas and the wider Amazon basin face the general Neotropical pressures of deforestation, wetland drainage and water pollution, but no threat has been specifically documented for this species.
