Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus regani was described by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell & Lovejoy in 2017, part of a major taxonomic revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus published by the same research group that added roughly fifteen new species to the genus in a single sweep. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all gymnotiforms it produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication, and the phylogenetic work behind its description drew on morphology together with mitochondrial cytochrome b and nuclear rag2 sequence data to sort a genus that had, until then, been badly under-described.
Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Brachyhypopomus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship. Within the Gymnotiformes, the Hypopomidae are the bluntnose group, distinguished from the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae) and the true knifefishes (Gymnotidae) by a shorter, blunter snout and a soft, unarmoured body. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the taxonomic authority for the valid name Brachyhypopomus regani.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus regani is a small, laterally compressed, soft-bodied fish reaching about 6 in total length in males and up to 5.5 in in females — modest even by the standards of the bluntnose knifefishes. Like its relatives it has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin, counted at 165–205 soft rays in this species, run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body that lets the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The body tapers to a blunt, rounded snout rather than the elongated probe seen in the sand knifefishes proper.
The species carries an accessory electric organ over the opercular region, a feature noted specifically in descriptions of its anatomy and part of what produces its electric organ discharge — a pulse-type signal typical of the Hypopomidae, delivered as discrete, well-spaced pulses rather than the continuous wave-type discharge of the ghost knifefishes. As in all Gymnotiformes the skin is entirely without scales, which leaves the fish sensitive to handling, poor water quality and to harsh medications.
Habitat
The species is known from the Amazon basin broadly, including the upper, central and lower Amazon, the lower Madeira, upper Purus, Tapajós, Araguaia and lower Tocantins drainages, together with the Orinoco drainage, the Essequibo River and coastal drainages of Guyana. Its range spans Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, making it one of the more widely distributed of the newly described Brachyhypopomus species even though each individual population sits within a specific Amazonian or Guiana Shield river system.
Bluntnose knifefishes in general are creatures of slow, structurally complex margins — leaf litter, submerged roots and marginal vegetation in blackwater and clearwater tributaries — rather than open channel. They are nocturnal, and by day tend to lie hidden among cover, emerging after dark to forage and to use their electric sense in water where eyesight offers little advantage.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet of Brachyhypopomus regani as aquatic insect larvae, with chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae predominant, together with microcrustaceans. This fits the pattern for small Hypopomidae generally: nocturnal, benthic-foraging predators that pick invertebrates out of leaf litter and soft sediment, relying on electrolocation to detect prey that is out of sight in the dark or buried just under the surface.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically. Related bluntnose knifefishes kept in captivity are typically offered small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, chopped blackworm and similar meaty items — fed after dark to match their natural activity pattern, and there is no reason to expect B. regani would differ, though this is inference from the genus rather than a documented account for the species.
Mating
As in other Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge in Brachyhypopomus carries information beyond simple electrolocation — it varies by species and by individual, and pulse-type signalling of this kind is understood to play a role in recognising potential mates and rivals in the dark, complex habitats these fish occupy. Courtship in the genus is therefore likely to involve an exchange of electric signals alongside physical approach, though the specific courtship behaviour of B. regani has not been documented.
The taxonomic literature describing this species focuses on morphology, distribution and phylogenetic placement rather than field observation of spawning behaviour, and no dedicated study of its mating system appears to exist. This is typical for the genus: Brachyhypopomus was radically expanded by description work in the 2010s, and the reproductive ecology of most of the resulting species, including this one, remains essentially unstudied.
Breeding
FishBase notes that Brachyhypopomus regani spawns among floating macrophytes during rising and high water, which places its reproduction within the seasonal flood pulse typical of Amazonian fishes — a strategy timed to the extra food and cover that floodplain vegetation provides. Beyond that spawning association, the breeding biology of the species is not documented: egg number, incubation, and any parental involvement are unrecorded in the available literature.
Across the Hypopomidae as a whole, breeding is poorly studied; where it is known at all, eggs are scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or floating plants with little or no parental care afterwards. There is no aquarium breeding record for B. regani, and given the near-total absence of the species from the hobby, none should be expected. Data sparse is the honest summary.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus regani has no established presence in the aquarium trade and no documented husbandry record — this account draws on the general care needs of small Hypopomidae rather than any specific experience with the species. Were it to be kept, the essentials would follow the group: a dim, quiet tank with a soft sand substrate for burrowing species and plenty of cover from leaf litter, roots or fine-leaved plants, since these are nocturnal fish that spend daylight hours hidden and become active only after the lights go down.
Being scaleless, it would need the same caution given to all Gymnotiformes — no copper-based medications, reduced dosing generally, and clean, mature, low-nitrate water, since scaleless skin offers little protection against ammonia, nitrite or harsh treatments. Its small size and soft body suggest it is not a fish for boisterous community tanks; quiet tankmates, or a species tank, would suit it far better. Captive-bred stock does not exist for this species, so any specimen in the trade would necessarily be wild-caught.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus regani is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, consistent with its fairly wide distribution across the Amazon basin, the Orinoco drainage and coastal Guiana Shield rivers. It is not currently considered at risk, and no aquarium trade pressure exists to speak of since the species is essentially unknown in the hobby.
As with many recently described, wide-ranging Amazonian and Guiana Shield fishes, the main long-term pressures on this species and its habitat are generic rather than species-specific: deforestation, mining-related sediment and mercury pollution, and hydropower development across the basins it occupies. Its status should be read as reflecting the security of a wide range rather than any dedicated study of population trends, which do not appear to exist for this species.
