Brachyhypopomus sullivani is a small, secretive bluntnose knifefish described only in the mid-2010s from terra firme streams across Greater Amazonia, and like almost every member of its order it carries a hidden sense that has nothing to do with its plain, scaleless looks. It generates a weak, pulse-type electric field around its body and reads the way that field is disturbed by rocks, roots, prey and other fish — a private sonar for a nocturnal life spent hunting invertebrates in dark, slow-flowing water where eyes count for little. It is named for the American ichthyologist John P. Sullivan, and it remains one of the many gymnotiforms about which the aquarium hobby, and science itself, still knows relatively little.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyhypopomus sullivani was formally described by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell and Lovejoy in 2016/2017 as part of a broad taxonomic revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus, which more than doubled the number of recognized species across Greater Amazonia. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish defined by a body-length anal fin used for locomotion and by an electric organ used for sensing and signalling in the dark. Within Brachyhypopomus it sits in the subgenus Odontohypopomus, a small group erected to contain this species alongside its close relative B. bennetti.

The species epithet honors ichthyologist John P. Sullivan of Cornell University, whose work on gymnotiform systematics underpins much of the modern classification of the group. As with other Gymnotiformes, B. sullivani is unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent body shape, not shared ancestry — true knifefish kinship is about the electric organ and the ribbon-like anal fin, not the blade-shaped silhouette. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Like other bluntnose knifefishes, Brachyhypopomus sullivani has a soft, scaleless, laterally compressed body that tapers to a thin, tailless point, with no dorsal fin and propulsion carried almost entirely by a long anal fin rippling beneath the body. The genus name reflects the short, blunt snout common to the group. Diagnostic features noted in the species description include scattered black or charcoal flecks across the flanks, extremely small eyes reflecting its nocturnal, electrosensory lifestyle, and skeletal details such as a cone-shaped interhyal bone with straight dorsal and ventral edges and the presence of a first branchiostegal ray, both used to separate it from closely related species.

Size is modest even by the standards of a genus of small fish, broadly in line with other Brachyhypopomus at well under 10 in. As in its relatives, the electric organ runs much of the length of the body beneath the skin, and the surface is studded with electroreceptive pores that pick up the field it produces. Data on external sexual differences are sparse for this recently described species.

Habitat

Brachyhypopomus sullivani is known from a wide swath of Greater Amazonia, with records spanning the upper, central and lower Amazon, the upper Madeira, the upper Tapajós and the lower Tocantins drainages; the type locality is a creek near Jenaro Herrera, a tributary of the Ucayali River in Loreto, Peru. It is described as a terra firme stream specialist — a stenotopic species tied to small, shaded forest streams on unflooded ground rather than the seasonally inundated várzea or the main river channels.

Within those streams it favors shallow, lentic and slow-flowing stretches, typically among leaf litter, roots and fine sediment where it can hide by day and hunt by night. As with other gymnotiforms, the dim, often tannin-stained water of these forest streams is exactly the setting in which electrolocation outperforms vision, and the species is thought to be active mainly after dark.

Feeding

Direct dietary data for Brachyhypopomus sullivani are sparse, but its ecology matches that documented across the genus: a nocturnally active predator of small invertebrates, using its pulse-type electric discharge to detect prey hidden in leaf litter, sediment and among roots rather than relying on its reduced eyes. Genus-wide, Brachyhypopomus species feed on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates picked out of cover after dark.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically. Based on its close relatives, it would be expected to accept small live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, small crustaceans, chopped worms — offered after the lights go down, in keeping with its nocturnal, electrolocation-driven hunting style.

Mating

As in other pulse-type Hypopomidae, the electric organ discharge in Brachyhypopomus is understood to carry social information beyond simple electrolocation — signature discharge patterns that likely differ by species and sex, and that plausibly play a role in recognizing and locating potential mates and rivals in the dark. Courtship in this genus, where it has been studied at all, is presumed to involve an exchange of these pulse signals alongside physical approach.

Specific courtship behavior has not been documented for Brachyhypopomus sullivani. As a recently described, range-limited stream species, its reproductive behavior remains largely unstudied, and any account beyond the general electric-signalling pattern shared across the genus would be speculation rather than observation.

Breeding

Breeding biology for Brachyhypopomus sullivani is not documented in the available literature. Data are sparse even at the genus level: where breeding has been recorded in Hypopomidae, it typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or fine sediment, generally tied to wet-season conditions, with little to no parental care afterward.

There is no record of this species being kept or bred in captivity. Given its status as a narrow-habitat, recently described stream specialist, it is best treated as a species about which breeding claims should not be made beyond what is known for the wider bluntnose knifefish group.

In the aquarium

Brachyhypopomus sullivani is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no meaningful hobby record for the species; any care guidance has to be extrapolated from the bluntnose knifefish group as a whole. Like its relatives it would be expected to need a dim, quiet tank with a soft substrate and ample cover — leaf litter, roots, fine sand — to replicate the shaded terra firme streams it comes from, plus warm, soft, near-neutral to acidic water.

As with all Gymnotiformes, the absence of scales makes this genus generally sensitive to poor water quality and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or heavily reduced if ever needed. Being a small, delicate nocturnal predator, it would not be expected to tolerate boisterous or bite-sized tankmates well. In practice this is a species for specialists working from wild-collected material or museum-adjacent research collections rather than a fish found in general trade.

Conservation

Brachyhypopomus sullivani is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. Its known distribution spans several major Amazonian drainages — the upper, central and lower Amazon, upper Madeira, upper Tapajós and lower Tocantins — consistent with a range wide enough to support that listing, though its terra firme stream habitat specialization means it could still be sensitive to deforestation and stream-level habitat disturbance within that range.

No specific conservation program targets this species. As with many small, poorly known gymnotiforms, its continued security is likely to depend indirectly on conservation of intact Amazonian forest stream habitat generally, rather than on any species-specific measure.
