Taxonomy & naming
Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni was described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1920, originally placed in the genus Urumara before being moved into Gymnorhamphichthys, and it belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae — the sand knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage of them, set apart from every other freshwater aquarium fish by their electric organs, their ribbon-like anal fin, and a body plan built around sensing the world electrically rather than visually.
The genus name is transparently descriptive: Gymnorhamphichthys combines the Greek gymnos (naked), rhamphos (beak or snout) and ichthys (fish) — the "naked-snouted fish", a direct reference to the long, bare, probing snout that defines the genus. The species epithet honours Marshal Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon (1865–1958), the Brazilian army officer, engineer and explorer whose Rondon Commission strung telegraph lines across Mato Grosso and Amazonas and, along the way, brought back specimens and data that fed early 20th-century Brazilian natural history. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and the original-combination history. As with several members of this genus, the exact type locality is not well documented in accessible sources, and the group is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order.
Morphology
Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni is a slender, elongated, scaleless fish reaching only around 6 in in total length — modest even by the standards of a group that includes half-metre ghost knifefishes. The body is weakly pigmented and semi-translucent, a build shared with several small Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae that spend their lives buried or in low light, where camouflage against sand matters more than colour. Its most distinctive feature is the long, pointed, naked snout for which the genus is named — an extension built for probing into sand and silt rather than for biting.
As in every gymnotiform there is no dorsal fin and no conventional tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside of the body, letting the fish glide forward or backward with equal control, a useful trait for an animal that reverses out of burrows and tight spaces in the sand. Running beneath the skin is the electric organ, paired with sensory pores across the body that read the field it produces. Sexual dimorphism has been documented in the species — females grow noticeably larger than males — though the finer morphological differences between the sexes remain poorly characterised in the available literature.
Habitat
This species is known from a broad swath of tropical South America, with records spanning the Amazon basin (Brazil, Peru, Colombia) and extending into the upper Paraná and Orinoco basins and the coastal rivers of the Guianas. It favours terra firme streams over sand and silt substrates — slow-moving channels where fine sediment accumulates and where the fish can bury itself completely, leaving little more than its snout exposed, or disappear from view altogether by day.
Like the great majority of Gymnotiformes it is a fish of warm, soft, acidic to near-neutral, often turbid or tannin-stained water, conditions where vision is of limited use and an electric sense becomes the primary way of reading the environment. Its habitat is frequently low in dissolved oxygen given the slow flow and organic sediment load, a condition several sand-dwelling knifefishes are well adapted to tolerate. The species' distribution is wide across Amazonian and adjacent basins, but the fine-grained detail of its habitat preferences — depth, flow, exact substrate grain size — is not well resolved in the sources available, and should be treated as data sparse beyond the broad picture of sandy, slow terra firme streams.
Feeding
Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni is a nocturnal micro-predator that hunts by probing the sand rather than by sight. After dark it emerges from its buried daytime rest and works over the substrate head-down, using its long snout and its electric sense together to locate prey hidden in the sediment. Confirmed prey items include the larvae of Chironomidae (non-biting midges) and Ceratopogonidae (biting midges), alongside other small aquatic invertebrates such as worms and microcrustaceans, with sediment and detritus incidentally taken up in the process.
In the aquarium it needs live or frozen foods of similarly small size — blackworms, bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp are all reported as accepted, while dry or flake foods are generally ignored. Because it feeds by probing sand at night, a fine, soft substrate and a feeding routine timed to lights-out matter more for this species than for most community fish; it is not a fish that will compete for food in daylight or take food from the surface.
Mating
As in other Gymnotiformes, the electric organ discharge is presumed to carry a social as well as a sensory role in Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni, and this species produces a weak, pulse-type discharge — as is typical for the Rhamphichthyidae and the related Hypopomidae, in contrast to the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes. Pulse-type discharges are thought to be species- and sex-specific, and courtship in this family is presumed to involve an exchange of electric signalling alongside physical approach in the dark, though this has not been directly documented for G. rondoni itself.
Beyond that inference from better-studied relatives, almost nothing specific has been published about courtship behaviour in this species. It should be read as data sparse: the electric-signalling framework is well established for the order and family, but the detailed courtship sequence of this particular sand knifefish has not been described.
Breeding
Breeding in Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni is poorly documented, and there is no confirmed record of captive spawning. What can be said is inferred from its position within the small-bodied, egg-laying Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae, where reproduction — where it has been studied at all — typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among sand, roots or leaf litter, with external fertilisation and no meaningful parental care afterward, likely timed to the wet season in the wild.
For this species specifically, that reproductive mode is presumed rather than confirmed, and no aquarium breeding protocol exists. The honest statement for the aquarist is that this is a species to appreciate for its natural history and its unusual electrosensory biology, not one with any realistic prospect of being bred at home; sources describe it as rarely bred and poorly documented, and that should be taken at face value rather than filled in with invented detail.
In the aquarium
Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni is a delicate, specialist fish, not a general community species, and it rarely appears in the trade. It needs a soft, fine sand substrate deep enough to bury into completely — this is not optional decor but the core of how the fish rests and hides by day — along with driftwood or other cover, dim lighting, and warm, soft, slightly acidic water in the region of 77–82 °F and around pH 6.6–6.8. A tank of at least 40–55 US gal gives it room to establish a territory in the sand without being disturbed.
Being scaleless, like every gymnotiform, it is sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be dosed cautiously and only when clearly necessary. It is peaceful and entirely non-aggressive but a committed nocturnal hunter of small invertebrates and insect larvae, so it is not safe with shrimp or other small invertebrate tankmates, and it is easily outcompeted for food by boisterous fish that feed by day. Handle it as little as possible — netting a scaleless, electrosensitive fish carries real risk of injury — and expect an animal that is more often heard about than seen, appearing from the sand only after the lights go down.
Conservation
Gymnorhamphichthys rondoni is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (2022), reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon, upper Paraná and Orinoco basins and the coastal rivers of the Guianas. It is not currently considered threatened, and there is no evidence in the available sources of significant habitat loss across its range as a whole.
That said, its status as a widely but thinly documented species means local pressures — sedimentation change, pollution, or degradation of the terra firme streams it depends on — could affect populations without being well tracked at the species level. As with many small, cryptic Amazonian fish, the broad "Least Concern" listing describes a continental range rather than any guarantee for a particular stream, and there is little population-level monitoring specific to this species to say more.
