Taxonomy & naming
Gymnorhamphichthys britskii was described by Carvalho, Ramos & Albert in 2011 in the journal Copeia, based on specimens from the Paraná–Paraguay basin. It belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: defined not by scales or fin shape in the ordinary sense but by an electric organ run down the body and a weak, self-generated electric field used for electrolocation and communication, a trait shared by nearly every species in the order.
The species epithet honours Heraldo A. Britski (b. 1934) of the Universidade de São Paulo, in recognition of his contributions to Neotropical ichthyology and specifically to the fish fauna of the Paraguay basin. The Rhamphichthyidae retain what is considered the ancestral, or plesiomorphic, condition for the order: a pulse-type electric organ discharge, fired at low, intermittent rates of roughly 10 to 100 Hz, rather than the fast continuous wave-type discharge of families like the Apteronotidae (the ghost knifefishes). Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnorhamphichthys and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order and resemble the Gymnotiformes only by convergent body shape. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Gymnorhamphichthys britskii has the elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the sand knifefishes, reaching a recorded maximum of about 7 in standard length. Like other gymnotiforms it is scaleless and has no dorsal fin and no separate tail fin; locomotion comes from a very long anal fin — in this species carrying roughly 141 to 172 rays — that runs almost the full length of the underside and drives the fish forward or backward with a travelling ripple. The pectoral fins are relatively small, with 13 to 15 rays.
The most distinctive external feature is a series of large, dark, saddle-shaped pigment bars running along the dorsal midline — typically 9 to 13, though the range recorded is 5 to 16 — stretching from behind the nape back toward the point where the anal fin ends, and in some individuals reaching down as far as the lateral line. This banding, together with proportional differences in fin-ray counts, is what separates G. britskii from its congeners. As in other sand knifefishes, the snout is drawn out into a long, narrow, tube-like point used for probing sediment, and an electric organ runs the length of the body beneath a field of sensory pores that read the fish's own electric field.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper and lower Paraguay basin and the lower Paraná basin, spanning parts of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, with tributaries of the Río de la Plata also reporting the species. It was first recorded in Argentina from the lower Paraná, and its presence further up the Paraná system is thought to be a relatively recent range expansion — plausibly enabled by the Itaipu reservoir, whose rising waters opened a passage past the Sete Quedas falls that had previously been a natural barrier between the upper and lower basins.
Like its relatives, G. britskii is a benthic, tropical freshwater fish associated with sandy substrate in flowing water. Sand knifefishes as a group spend the day buried in the riverbed and emerge at night to hunt, favouring the same warm, soft, dimly lit conditions that suit the electric sense the whole order depends on. Specific water chemistry data for this species has not been documented in the sources reviewed here.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data specific to Gymnorhamphichthys britskii has not been documented, but the feeding ecology of the genus is well characterised and almost certainly applies. Sand knifefishes use their long, tube-like snout to probe and sift through sandy substrate for small invertebrates, chiefly aquatic insect larvae, moving over the sand head-down at night while locating buried prey largely by electrolocation rather than sight.
This is a nocturnal, probing style of hunting rather than an ambush strategy: the fish works the sediment methodically after dark and rests buried in the sand through the day, when its electric sense and its cryptic habits together keep it largely hidden from predators and from casual observation alike.
Mating
As in other gymnotiforms, the pulse-type electric organ discharge of Gymnorhamphichthys britskii is understood to carry information beyond simple electrolocation — the discharge pattern is thought to function in intraspecific communication, and by extension in signalling between potential mates, though this has not been studied directly in this species. Courtship and pair formation in the wild have not been documented for G. britskii specifically.
Data on reproductive behaviour across the Rhamphichthyidae generally is sparse; much of what is known about gymnotiform courtship in general comes from laboratory electrophysiology in other, better-studied genera rather than from field observation of this family.
Breeding
Breeding in Gymnorhamphichthys britskii is poorly documented and there is no established aquarium breeding protocol. Small Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae generally are egg-layers whose spawning is rarely observed even in the wild; where documented in related species, eggs are scattered or deposited among sand, roots or leaf litter, typically timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward.
Given how recently the species was described and how little is recorded of its natural history, the honest position for the aquarist is that breeding data is simply data sparse — there is nothing in the literature to draw a reliable account from, and none should be invented.
In the aquarium
Gymnorhamphichthys britskii is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and has no established husbandry record; anything offered here is extrapolated cautiously from its close relatives among the sand and bluntnose knifefishes. Being scaleless, it should be assumed sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which typically call for reduced dosing across this order. A soft, sandy substrate is essential — it is a burrowing fish that needs sand fine enough to bury itself in by day, not gravel.
As a nocturnal predator that locates prey by electrolocation, it should not be trusted with bite-sized fish or shrimp, which risk being hunted after dark regardless of how retiring the fish appears in daylight. Dim lighting, quiet water movement and undisturbed sand are more likely to suit it than a brightly lit, heavily decorated community tank. Given how little is known of its needs, this is a fish for a specialist willing to work from first principles rather than an established care sheet, and wild-caught status should be assumed unless stated otherwise.
Conservation
Gymnorhamphichthys britskii is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, reflecting a distribution across a substantial stretch of the Paraguay and lower-to-upper Paraná basins in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, and a fishing-vulnerability score rated low. It is not currently considered a species of conservation concern.
That said, the Paraná–Paraguay system faces ongoing pressures from damming, altered flow regimes and habitat change, and the species' own apparent range expansion via the Itaipu reservoir is a reminder of how much these river systems are being reshaped by infrastructure. As with many recently described, poorly studied fish, continued monitoring matters more than the current low-concern rating alone might suggest.
