Gymnotus coatesi is a small, rarely-seen banded knifefish from the Amazon basin, known mostly from museum specimens and a handful of collecting sites rather than from the aquarium trade. Like every member of its stout, boldly-barred genus, it swims by rippling a single long anal fin — it has no dorsal fin and no true tail — moving backward as easily as forward, and it reads its dark, sediment-laden world through a weak electric field generated around its scaleless body. That field is pulsed rather than continuous, discharged in discrete pulses used both to sense obstacles and prey in the gloom of flooded forest streams and to signal its identity, sex and mood to other Gymnotus sharing the same water.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus coatesi was described by Francesca La Monte in 1935 and belongs to the family Gymnotidae, subfamily Gymnotinae, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists it in the subgenus Tigrinus, one of several lineages recognized within the large and still-being-revised genus Gymnotus. The holotype is held at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH 12624), collected from the Rio Moju, a south-bank tributary of the Amazon near Santarém, Pará, Brazil.

Gymnotus is the only genus in the order Gymnotiformes that reaches Central America, extending as far north as southern Mexico, though G. coatesi itself is a South American, Amazon-basin species. The genus has been split extensively as more material has come to light — the once-broad Gymnotus carapo has itself been divided into 20 or more species — and Crampton & Albert's 2004 redescription of G. coatesi laid out the osteological, electric-signal and meristic characters that separate it from its close relatives. Despite the shared common name, Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance in body shape is convergent, not a sign of kinship.

Morphology

Gymnotus coatesi shows the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, laterally compressed, scaleless body marked with the bold dark crossbars typical of the genus, tapering to a blunt head at one end and a fine point at the other. There is no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin; locomotion comes from a very long anal fin running beneath most of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish glide forward or reverse with equal control — useful for backing out of tight cover in flooded vegetation.

FishBase records a maximum length of 12 in total length for the species, modest for the genus and well short of the size some Gymnotus reach. Along the flanks runs the electric organ, paired with rows of electroreceptor pores across the skin that pick up distortions in the field it produces. Like all Gymnotus, G. coatesi is a facultative air-breather, able to gulp air at the surface when dissolved oxygen runs low — an adaptation that lets banded knifefishes survive in the stagnant, oxygen-poor pools of the flood season that would exhaust most other fish. No reliable external features are documented for telling the sexes apart in this species.

Habitat

The species is known from the main stem of the Amazon, from the confluence of the Río Marañón and Río Ucayali in Loreto, Peru, downstream to the Rio Tocantins in Pará, Brazil, with further records from Bolivia and Ecuador — a wide but sparsely-documented range across the Amazon basin. Crampton & Albert describe it from seasonally flooded streams and the upper, non-flooded reaches of terra firme rainforest creeks; around Tefé it has been found in the lower courses of these small forest streams as they flood with the rising river.

These are warm, structurally complex waters — leaf litter, submerged roots and, during high water, flooded forest and floating meadow vegetation — where visibility is poor and an electric sense does far more work than eyesight. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes both describe G. coatesi as small and rare, poorly represented even in museum collections, which suggests either a genuinely restricted range within its basin or a fish that is simply difficult to collect in the habitats it favors.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Gymnotus coatesi is not documented in the sources consulted, but the genus is uniformly predatory: banded knifefishes are nocturnal hunters of aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — and, in larger species, small fish, located in the dark largely by electrolocation rather than sight. As a facultative air-breather adapted to floodplain and forest-stream life, G. coatesi likely forages over leaf litter and root tangles where its electric sense can pick out prey that eyes could not find in the tannin-stained water.

In the rare event this species is kept, it should be treated like its better-known relatives and offered meaty foods after dark — bloodworm, chopped earthworm and similar frozen fare — rather than assumed to accept flake or community foods.

Mating

Courtship in Gymnotus is bound up with its pulse-type electric organ discharge, which carries a species- and sex-specific signature used for both electrolocation and communication. Research on the genus (Crampton and colleagues, and the dedicated study of nesting and paternal care in weakly electric Gymnotus) shows that discharge patterns feature in how individuals recognize potential mates and rivals in the dark, murky water the genus favors, though the electric side of courtship has been studied mostly in other, more accessible Gymnotus species rather than in G. coatesi itself.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus coatesi is not an established aquarium fish — it is small, rare, poorly collected, and essentially unknown in the trade. Where any banded Gymnotus does appear in hobbyist circles, the same husbandry principles apply: the fish is scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be used at reduced doses if at all. It needs dim lighting and secure daytime hides — pipes, root tangles or dense cover — because it is a nocturnal predator that becomes active after dark.

Banded knifefishes are not community-safe with small, bite-size tankmates, which they will hunt at night by electrolocation, and they are often territorial toward their own kind, so multiple individuals need generous space and cover to avoid conflict. Given how little is known about G. coatesi specifically and how rarely it is collected, anyone encountering it should treat it as a specialist fish for an experienced keeper rather than assume standard Gymnotus care will translate perfectly — data on this species is genuinely sparse.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gymnotus coatesi as Least Concern (2023), reflecting its wide if patchy distribution across the Amazon basin, spanning Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, rather than any specific evidence of a large or secure population. The species' rarity in collections seems to be a matter of detectability and habitat rather than a sign of decline: it inhabits seasonally flooded and small forest streams that are simply undersampled compared with larger, more accessible rivers.

The broader pressures facing Amazonian floodplain and forest-stream habitats — deforestation, damming, and pollution across the basin — apply to G. coatesi as they do to the many other narrow-range or poorly-known fishes sharing its habitat, even though no species-specific threat has been documented. As with many Data-Deficient-adjacent Amazonian fishes, the honest summary is that too little is known about its population to say more than that its current status is not one of concern.
