Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus curupira was described by Crampton, Thorsen & Albert in 2005, one of many species split from the wide-ranging Gymnotus carapo species complex once genetic and morphological work showed that a single "species" was really twenty or more. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but highly unusual ones, distinguished by a weak electric organ used for electrolocation and communication and by a single long anal fin that provides essentially all of their propulsion, forward or backward, in place of a dorsal fin or a conventional tail.
The species epithet honours the Curupira, a shape-shifting forest guardian of Amazonian and wider Brazilian folklore whose feet are said to point backward, misleading anyone who tries to track it. Gymnotus is the only genus of gymnotiform to leave South America, its range extending north through Central America to southern Mexico, though G. curupira itself is a narrow-range Amazonian endemic. Despite the shared common name, knifefishes of this order are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Like other Gymnotus, G. curupira is a stout-bodied, boldly barred fish rather than the slender ribbon shape of the ghost knifefishes — dark bands cross a lighter body, a pattern typical of the banded knifefishes and useful for telling species apart in the field. It is scaleless, with anal soft rays numbering roughly 230 to 320, that long fin running most of the length of the underside and driving the fish in smooth waves. There is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin.
An electric organ runs along the body and generates a pulse-type discharge, distinct from the continuous wave-type signal of the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotidae); pulse-type fish emit discrete, spaced-out pulses rather than a steady electric hum, and use them for the same two jobs — electrolocation in the dark and electrocommunication with other knifefish. G. curupira also has a hypervascularized chamber in the posterior gas bladder that lets it gulp air at the surface, a facultative air-breathing adaptation shared with its relatives that allows it to survive in poorly oxygenated, sometimes shrinking pools.
Habitat
The species is known from isolated forest swamp pools associated with the Igarapé Curupira, a small forest stream near Tefé in the Brazilian Amazon, with its broader distribution given as the lowland Amazon basin across Brazil and Peru. These are blackwater habitats within rainforest terra firme — still, shaded pools rather than open river channel, often surrounded by dense leaf litter and vegetation.
Such pools can shrink and even dry seasonally, and G. curupira's facultative air-breathing is a direct response to that instability: when dissolved oxygen drops as a pool stagnates, the fish rises to gulp air rather than suffocating. It has even been recorded moving across wet leaf litter on land, presumably to reach a better pool when its own is failing — a striking behaviour for a fish, and a reminder of how marginal and unpredictable this habitat can be.
Feeding
Gymnotus curupira is a nocturnal predator, hunting chironomid (midge) larvae, other aquatic insect nymphs, and allochthonous invertebrates — prey that falls or washes into the pool from the surrounding forest rather than being produced within it. Like other Gymnotus it almost certainly relies heavily on electrolocation to find this prey among leaf litter and in the dark, sensing the way small animals distort its self-generated electric field where eyesight would be of little use.
As a facultative air-breathing predator of confined, often oxygen-poor pools, it is well suited to picking off invertebrates in leaf-litter-choked water that would be unworkable for most other fish. Detailed feeding studies specific to this species are sparse beyond the prey categories above; general Gymnotus biology and captive accounts of related species suggest an opportunistic, nocturnal hunting style.
Mating
Courtship and signalling in Gymnotidae are closely tied to the electric organ discharge, which carries information on identity, sex and readiness to breed in addition to its role in sensing the environment. Gymnotus are territorial, particularly the males, and the same pulse discharge used to detect prey and obstacles very likely doubles as a signal exchanged between potential mates and rivals in the dark, seasonal, flood-triggered breeding period typical of the family.
No courtship behaviour specific to G. curupira has been documented in the sources available; what is established for the genus and family is that reproduction happens with genuine parental investment, unusual among fishes generally and worth flagging clearly here rather than assumed from other groups.
Breeding
Gymnotidae are known for parental care: the male builds and guards a nest — a mass of floating foam or a sheltered hollow among vegetation — the female spawns into it, and the male then guards the eggs and larvae through to independence. This is the pattern documented for the genus and is presumed to apply to G. curupira, whose own reproduction is tied to the same seasonal, flood-triggered cycle. No clutch size or specific breeding account for this species was found in the sources reviewed.
G. curupira has not been reported bred in the aquarium; data on its reproduction is sparse even in the scientific literature beyond the general Gymnotidae pattern of male-guarded nests. It should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity rather than assigned a protocol that has not actually been observed for this species.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus curupira is essentially unknown in the hobby and, as a narrow-range Amazonian endemic collected from remote forest swamp pools, is unlikely to appear in the trade in any numbers; general Gymnotus husbandry notes below are extrapolated from better-known relatives such as G. carapo and should be read with that caveat. Being scaleless, Gymnotus are sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be dosed at reduced strength if used at all.
As nocturnal predators, Gymnotus need dim lighting and secure cover — root tangles, pipes or dense planting — to feel settled by day, and they are not community-safe with anything small enough to be hunted after dark; they can also be territorial with their own kind. Facultative air-breathing means they tolerate warmer, less oxygenated water than many fish, but this is not licence for poor water quality generally. Anyone who does encounter this species should assume it needs the same warm, soft, dimly lit, well-covered setup as its relatives, scaled to a fish that reaches roughly 9.5 in in total length.
Conservation
Gymnotus curupira is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020. That said, it is known only from a small area of forest swamp habitat near Tefé and the wider lowland Amazon in Brazil and Peru, the kind of narrow-range, habitat-specific distribution that can be more vulnerable than the Least Concern label alone suggests — its assessment reflects current knowledge rather than a guarantee of resilience to deforestation or wetland disturbance in its home range.
As with many gymnotiforms, there is no evidence of significant trade or collection pressure on this species; its rarity in scientific and hobby records more likely reflects its remote, hard-to-sample swamp habitat than active conservation concern. Protecting the forest swamp pools and terra firme habitat of the Tefé region is the most relevant conservation measure implied by what is known of its range.
