Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus javari was described by Albert, Crampton & Hagedorn in 2003, one of many species split from the old, broadly-defined Gymnotus carapo species complex as researchers worked through the genus's true diversity. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ running the length of the body and a single long anal fin that provides essentially all of their propulsion, in place of a proper dorsal or tail fin.
The type locality is the Rio Javari, the river that forms part of the Brazil–Peru border and gives the species its name. Gymnotus is the largest genus in the order and the only one to reach Central America; within it, G. javari sits close to the G. pantherinus species-group but is distinguished by the pattern of pale bands crossing its body. As with all valid names on this site, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is treated as the taxonomic authority. Despite the shared common name, Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship.
Morphology
The false tiger knifefish has the classic Gymnotus body plan: elongated, laterally compressed, tapering smoothly from a moderately deep head and trunk to a fine point at the tail, with no dorsal fin and no separate caudal fin. Locomotion comes from a single long anal fin running almost the full length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease — useful for backing out of tight cover in the root tangles and flooded vegetation it lives among.
Its pattern is diagnostic: narrow pale bands cross the front half of the body, giving way toward the tail to five to eight partially divided, H-shaped dark bars on a lighter ground — the barred look behind the common name "false tiger" and the feature that separates it from its close relatives in the G. pantherinus group. The skin is scaleless and unprotected, a point that matters for how the fish must be kept and medicated. Running beneath the skin along most of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of sensory pores that read the field it generates; sexes are not reliably distinguished by external features.
Habitat
Gymnotus javari is known from the western Amazon basin, along the Rio Javari and neighbouring drainages of the Napo and Ucayali river systems and the lower Amazonas, spanning the Brazil–Peru border region. Collected specimens from the Rio Aguarico in Ecuador come from small forest streams with soft, acidic water — pH 5.5 to 6.0 and around 76 °F — consistent with the wider picture for the species.
Its habitats span slow-moving floodplain lakes, shaded forest streams, undercut banks and whitewater floodplain meadows near the river margin, typically among dense submerged vegetation. These are dimly lit, often oxygen-poor waters rich in tannins from decaying leaf litter — exactly the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense pays off, and a facultative air-breather like Gymnotus can tolerate low dissolved oxygen that would trouble many other fish. The aquarium should echo this: soft, acidic, warm, gently stained water with heavy cover rather than open, brightly lit swimming space.
Feeding
Gymnotus javari is a carnivorous micropredator and a nocturnal ambush hunter, taking small fish, insect larvae, crustaceans and worms in the wild. Like other members of the genus it relies heavily on its pulse-type electric organ discharge for electrolocation, sensing the electrical distortions that prey and obstacles create in its self-generated field as it forages through cover after dark, when eyesight is of little use in blackwater and tannin-stained streams.
In the aquarium it accepts standard meaty fare — bloodworm, chopped earthworm, small pieces of fish or prawn, and other frozen or live foods of a size it can swallow whole — and, being nocturnal, feeds best once the lights are down. As with other Gymnotus, anything small enough to fit in its mouth should be considered potential prey; this is not a fish to keep with nano fish, fry or shrimp.
Mating
As in other Gymnotus, electricity almost certainly plays a role in courtship: the pulse-type electric organ discharge carries a species- and individual-specific signature that functions in electrocommunication as well as electrolocation, and rapid modulation of the discharge during free-swimming behaviour has been documented across the genus, consistent with electrical signalling between individuals that meet in the dark. Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for G. javari itself, and the cache of sources available here is silent on the details for this species — the honest position is that its courtship sequence is data sparse.
What is well established for the family Gymnotidae generally is that reproduction is unusual among fishes for showing real parental care, with the male typically responsible for guarding a nest site rather than the pair simply scattering eggs and leaving. G. javari should be assumed to follow this pattern in general outline, though the specifics for this species have not been confirmed in the sources reviewed.
Breeding
Aquarium sources describe only minimal captive breeding of Gymnotus javari — this is a species that has not been reliably spawned in home aquaria, and little is documented beyond the genus-wide pattern. In Gymnotus generally, the male builds and guards a nest, often a sheltered hollow among vegetation or debris, into which the female spawns; the male then guards the eggs and the resulting larvae, with spawning typically tied to seasonal flooding in the wild.
For the aquarist the realistic expectation is that this species will not spawn in a typical home setup, and no dependable protocol exists to draw on. Fish in the trade should be assumed wild-caught; treating the species primarily as a display animal, kept well rather than pushed to breed, is the honest approach given how sparse the record is.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus javari reaches a modest size for the genus — around 8–8.5 in total length, with sexual maturity beginning at 3–4 in — which makes it more tractable than the larger knifefishes, but it still needs a properly sized aquarium: a minimum of around 65 US gal for a single adult, with soft, acidic to near-neutral water kept warm and clean. Dense cover is essential — driftwood, root tangles and plants that create shaded hiding places — along with subdued lighting, since this is a nocturnal fish that becomes active once the lights go down.
Being scaleless, it needs careful handling of medications: copper-based treatments should be avoided and doses of other medicines are often reduced, and stable water quality with low ammonia and nitrate matters more than it does for scaled fish. In the wild it is solitary and territorial toward its own kind and other knifefish, but aquarium reports describe captive individuals proving surprisingly compatible, even huddling together without conflict — a reminder that captive behaviour does not always mirror the wild. It is not a community fish for small tankmates; anything bite-sized is at risk after dark. Choose robust, similarly sized companions, or keep it alone.
Conservation
Gymnotus javari is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It occupies a reasonably broad swathe of the western Amazon across the Rio Javari, Napo and Ucayali drainages and the lower Amazonas, and does not currently appear to face the acute, localized pressures that threaten narrow-range single-river endemics elsewhere in the order.
That said, the western Amazon floodplain habitats this species depends on — shaded forest streams, floodplain lakes and vegetated river margins — are not immune to deforestation, water pollution and hydrological change from damming, all pressures affecting the wider basin. A Least Concern listing describes the species' status across its range, not a guarantee for any particular stretch of river, and aquarists should still favour responsibly sourced stock where possible.
