Gymnotus mamiraua is a stout, boldly barred banded knifefish described in 2001 from the flooded forests of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve in central Amazonia, the wetland that gave it its name. Like every member of the family Gymnotidae, it swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, has no dorsal fin, and reads its dark, tannin-stained floodplain world through a weak electric field generated around its own body — a pulse-type discharge used both to sense prey and obstacles in the murk and to signal to rivals and mates. It is one of several closely related Gymnotus species that live side by side in the same Amazon floodplain lakes, told apart as much by the details of their electric signals as by their markings.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus mamiraua was described by James Albert and William Crampton in 2001, one of five new Gymnotus species the pair described together from an upper Amazon floodplain in a single paper documenting electric organ discharges and ecology alongside morphology. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by any resemblance to typical fish body plans.

The species epithet honours the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve near Tefé, Amazonas, Brazil, the type locality where the fish was collected from the reserve's floodplain lake system; a further population is recorded from Lago Janauacá near Manaus. Gymnotus is a large genus that has been heavily revised in recent decades, with molecular and electric-signal work splitting what was once treated as one widespread species, Gymnotus carapo, into more than twenty distinct species across the Neotropics — G. mamiraua is one product of that revision. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order; the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship.

Morphology

Gymnotus mamiraua has the classic banded-knifefish build: a stout, laterally compressed, scaleless body marked with bold dark bars across a lighter ground colour, tapering smoothly to a point with no distinct tail fin and no dorsal fin at all. Locomotion comes from a single long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, undulated in travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease — useful for backing out of tight cover in flooded vegetation. FishBase records a maximum length of about 9.5 in total length, modest for the genus but solidly built and muscular compared with the more slender ghost and glass knifefishes.

Running the length of the body is the electric organ that gives the order its name, paired with an array of sensory pores across the skin that read the resulting field. Gymnotus produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge — brief, discrete pulses rather than the continuous wave-type signal of families like Apteronotidae — used for electrolocation in the dark, sediment-laden floodplain water where vision is of limited use. A chromosome study of sympatric Amazon-floodplain Gymnotus species found no evidence of chromosomal sex determination in this group (karyotype 2n=54 reported for G. mamiraua), and confirmed that closely related species sharing the same lakes are distinguished in part by variation in their electric signals rather than by looks alone.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Solimões floodplain of central Amazonia, with its type locality in the seasonally flooded lakes and forest of the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve near Tefé and a further record from Lago Janauacá near Manaus — classic Amazonian várzea, whitewater floodplain habitat that floods and recedes with the annual river cycle. Water there is recorded as near-neutral, around pH 6.9–7.3, warm, and often dim or turbid, exactly the low-visibility conditions in which an electric sense pays off.

Like other Gymnotus, G. mamiraua is well suited to this seasonal, sometimes oxygen-poor floodplain environment: the genus is facultatively air-breathing, able to gulp air at the surface when dissolved oxygen in stagnant flood pools drops, a trait shared with its more famous relative the electric eel. It shelters by day among submerged roots, leaf litter and flooded vegetation and becomes an active nocturnal hunter after dark.

Feeding

As in other Gymnotus, G. mamiraua is understood to be a nocturnal predator, hunting small invertebrates and other prey in the flooded forest and floodplain lakes largely by electrolocation, detecting the electrical signature of animals hidden in leaf litter, root tangles and sediment where eyesight offers little advantage after dark. The cache consulted for this account does not detail stomach-content studies specific to G. mamiraua, so its exact prey spectrum is not confirmed here; data is sparse for this recently described species outside the original taxonomic paper.

Gymnotus generally are tough, opportunistic feeders — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and other invertebrates are typical fare for the genus — and there is no reason from the available sources to expect G. mamiraua to differ substantially from its close relatives in the same floodplain lakes.

Mating

Courtship and signalling in Gymnotus, as in the wider order, is bound up with the electric organ discharge: pulse rate and waveform carry information about a fish's identity and sex, and the chromosome and electric-signal study of sympatric Amazon-floodplain Gymnotus species found that even closely related, similarly marked species sharing the same lake can be told apart by their discharges — a strong hint that the fish themselves use those same differences to recognise their own species and potential mates in dark, turbid water.

Beyond that electrical dimension, detailed observations of courtship behaviour specific to G. mamiraua are not available in the sources reviewed; this is a narrow-range species described only in 2001, and much of what is confidently known about it comes from the original taxonomic and later genetic literature rather than from behavioural study.

Breeding

FishBase records Gymnotus mamiraua as oviparous, with the male building a nest among the roots of floating macrophytes and guarding the eggs and larvae afterwards — the same pattern of unusual, active parental care documented across Gymnotidae, in which most fish invest nothing in their eggs but gymnotids build and defend a nest. Spawning in the wild is presumed to be tied to the seasonal flood cycle that defines its floodplain habitat, though the sources reviewed do not give further detail on timing or clutch size.

This species is not known to be established in the aquarium hobby, and there is no record in the cache of it having been bred in captivity; data is sparse beyond the wild nest-guarding behaviour reported for the genus and confirmed for this species.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus mamiraua does not appear to be a fish in general aquarium circulation — the sources reviewed describe a scientifically documented Amazon floodplain species rather than an established hobby animal, and no aquarium-specific care reports were found. Prospective keepers should take the general rules for banded knifefishes as a starting point rather than species-specific guidance: like its relatives, it would be expected to need dim lighting, secure cover such as pipes or root tangles to retreat into by day, and tankmates it cannot fit in its mouth, since Gymnotus are nocturnal predators that hunt smaller fish and invertebrates after dark and are typically kept alone or with robust, similarly sized companions.

Being scaleless, any Gymnotus warrants caution with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard remedies are poorly tolerated — and with water quality generally, given the group's sensitivity to ammonia and nitrate. Given the lack of confirmed trade or husbandry data for this specific species, that guidance should be treated as inferred from the genus rather than verified for G. mamiraua itself.

Conservation

Gymnotus mamiraua is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 2018. Its known range within the Rio Solimões floodplain of central Amazonia, including the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve itself — a large, actively protected conservation unit — likely supports that status, since a significant part of its habitat already carries formal protection.

As with other floodplain-restricted Amazonian fish, the general pressures on this kind of habitat are deforestation, changes to the natural flood pulse from upstream development, and pollution, though the sources reviewed do not report specific threats or population trends for this species beyond the Least Concern listing itself.
