Gymnotus riberalta is a stout, boldly barred banded knifefish described in 2018 from the Upper Madeira basin of Bolivia and Peru — one of two new species split out of a major revision of the genus in that river system. Like every member of Gymnotus it is a weakly electric fish, generating a pulse-type electric organ discharge around its body that it uses to electrolocate prey and obstacles in dark water and to signal to other knifefish, a sense that matters more to how it lives than its small, unremarkable eyes. It swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, moving backwards as readily as forwards, and like its relatives it is scaleless from snout to tip. Almost nothing has reached the aquarium hobby about this particular species beyond the taxonomic description; what follows is built from the genus's well-documented biology and the little that is known of G. riberalta specifically.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus riberalta was described in 2018 by Matthew Craig, Rodríguez, Ortega, Crampton and Albert, as part of a comprehensive revision of the genus Gymnotus in the Upper Madeira basin of Bolivia and Peru, published in Zootaxa. The description drew on more than 240 specimens across the basin and separated species using body proportions, fin-ray and scale counts, geometric morphometrics, skeletal characters and colour pattern — the kind of detailed, multi-character work needed to split a genus whose species look superficially alike. Gymnotus riberalta was found to be morphologically most similar to G. pantanal, a species from the separate Paraguay–Paraná basin.

The species belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin rather than a tail. The genus name is fittingly literal: the epithet riberalta is taken directly from Riberalta, the city in Beni Department, Bolivia, that serves as the species' type locality. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the taxonomic authority for the valid name.

Morphology

As a member of Gymnotus, G. riberalta has the stout, boldly barred body typical of the banded knifefishes — a laterally compressed, elongate form crossed by dark bands, tapering to a whip-like tail with no distinct caudal or dorsal fin. Locomotion comes from a single long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal control, a hallmark of the whole order. The species is scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, which leaves the skin exposed and has direct consequences for how sensitive the fish is to water quality and medication.

Running the length of the body is the electric organ that gives the group its name, paired with an array of skin pores that read the field it generates. Gymnotus produce a pulse-type electric organ discharge — discrete, stereotyped pulses with a waveform that is distinctive by species and by sex, rather than the continuous wave-type signal seen in some other gymnotiform families. The 2018 description separated G. riberalta from its close relatives using fine details of body proportion and meristic counts; specific measurements and colour-pattern details beyond 'boldly barred' are not established in the sources available for this account.

Habitat

Gymnotus riberalta is known only from the Upper Madeira basin — specifically the Beni River system — in Bolivia and adjoining Peru, with its type locality at Riberalta in Bolivia's Beni Department. The Madeira is one of the Amazon's largest tributaries, and the Beni is itself a major headwater system draining the eastern Andean foothills and lowland floodplains of Bolivia.

Banded knifefishes as a group are fish of swamps, floodplains and slow, structurally complex water — leaf litter, submerged roots and vegetation — rather than open channels, and most are facultative air-breathers, letting them tolerate the warm, oxygen-poor conditions typical of flooded, vegetated habitat during the wet season. Dim, tannin-stained water suits their electrosensory lifestyle, where an electric field does the work that eyes cannot in the dark or in turbid water. Precise habitat notes specific to G. riberalta beyond its Upper Madeira range are not documented in the available sources.

Feeding

Anyone encountering material sold under this name should treat the identification with real caution, since Gymnotus species are notoriously difficult to distinguish without the kind of detailed measurement used in their original descriptions.

Were it kept, the genus-level care profile would apply: banded knifefishes are tough, nocturnal, facultatively air-breathing predators that do best in dim, planted or well-decorated tanks with sandy substrate and secure hiding places such as caves, pipes or driftwood. Being scaleless, they need great care with medications — no copper-based treatments, and reduced doses generally — and are sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, requiring mature filtration. They are not community-safe with bite-size fish or shrimp, which they hunt by electrolocation after dark, and are often territorial with their own kind. As with any recently described, geographically narrow species, captive-bred stock does not exist, and there is no ethical case for collecting it for the trade at this stage.

Conservation

Gymnotus riberalta has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated. It is known only from the Upper Madeira (Beni River) basin of Bolivia and Peru, a range that — while part of a large Amazonian drainage — makes it a narrow-range endemic among the roughly 40-plus species of Gymnotus recognised.

Species confined to a single river system are typically the most exposed within this genus to habitat pressures such as deforestation, water pollution and the hydrological changes that come with dam construction in Andean headwater basins, though no basin-specific threat assessment for G. riberalta is documented in the available sources.
