Taxonomy & naming
Potamotrygon limai was formally described in 2014 by Fontenelle, Da Silva, and Carvalho in the journal Zootaxa, based on thirty specimens collected from the Jamari River in the state of Rondônia, which flows into the upper Madeira in the Amazon basin. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises it as a valid species within the genus Potamotrygon, family Potamotrygonidae, order Myliobatiformes. No synonym genus combinations have been recorded.
These are elasmobranchs — cartilaginous fish whose skeleton is built of cartilage rather than bone — and members of Chondrichthyes, the class that includes the sharks and the marine stingrays. The Potamotrygonidae are the only fully freshwater radiation within this lineage: ancestors colonised South American rivers from a marine ancestor, and the family has been landlocked in those drainages ever since. Potamotrygon limai has no common name in established English use; the species epithet honours the collector Edson Lemos de Lima (see Etymology).
Morphology
Potamotrygon limai has the typical Potamotrygonidae body plan: a broad, dorsoventrally flattened pectoral disc with the eyes and paired spiracles on the dorsal surface and the mouth, nostrils, and gill slits on the ventral side. The disc is oval, slightly longer than wide — the original description records a disc length roughly 98–107.8 percent of disc width across the type series — and reaches a maximum disc width of approximately 25.5 in in males, making this a medium-to-large member of the genus. Total length, including the tail, is substantially greater.
The dorsal colouration is the species' most diagnostic feature: a ground of dark olive to grey-brown is overlaid with small whitish spots arranged in characteristic polygonal or concentric clusters on the posterior disc and the tail-base, a pattern that distinguishes it from sympatric or nearby Potamotrygon species with different spot configurations. The tail bears one or more serrated venomous spines near the base — enlarged, modified dermal denticles sheathed in venom-secreting integument, which are shed periodically and regrown. The rest of the skin is covered in minute tooth-like denticles rather than true scales. Males carry paired claspers — rod-like copulatory organs derived from the inner edges of the pelvic fins — and females grow larger.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the upper Madeira River drainage in Rondônia state, Brazil, with the Jamari River as its type locality. The upper Madeira system carries warm, turbid white-water and mixed clear-water tributaries draining the southern Amazon basin and the Rondônia uplands. Potamotrygon limai is a benthic species, resting on sandy and silty substrates of river margins, beaches, and slack-water areas, where it lies partly buried with only the eyes and spiracles exposed above the sediment surface.
Respiration while buried is accomplished through the spiracles — paired openings on the top of the head through which water is drawn into the gill chamber, bypassing the mouth — an adaptation that allows the ray to breathe without lifting from the substrate. Published aquarium husbandry data place the species in water at 75–81 °F (75–81 °F), pH 6.0–7.5, and moderate general hardness (GH 3–12 dH), reflecting the warm, soft to moderately mineralised character of Amazonian drainage water.
Feeding
Like all Potamotrygonidae, Potamotrygon limai is a carnivore and a benthic predator. It detects prey through the ampullae of Lorenzini — electro-sensory pores distributed across the ventral surface of the disc — which pick up the faint electrical fields generated by buried or concealed invertebrates and small fishes. Prey is pinned against the substrate by the disc and manipulated to the mouth, which is equipped with tooth-plate batteries suited to crushing hard-bodied prey such as crustaceans and molluscs, as well as softer items including worms and aquatic insect larvae.
In captivity the species takes the standard ray diet of meaty benthic foods: earthworms, whole shrimp, mussel, and similarly substantial whole or cut animal foods offered on or near the substrate. Like other large Potamotrygon it is an active feeder that produces a substantial waste load, placing high demands on filtration — an unavoidable tension between the fish's appetite and its sensitivity to the ammonia and nitrate that its own digestion produces.
Mating
Potamotrygon limai breeds by internal fertilisation, as do all elasmobranchs. A male approaches the female and grips her disc margin with his mouth — biting behaviour that can leave visible, healing marks on the disc — and then inserts one of his paired claspers into the female's cloaca to transfer sperm. There is no spawning site, no territory, and no external eggs; the entire early development of the embryos takes place inside the female's body.
In common with other members of the family, courtship and mating are tied to the seasonal flood cycle of the Madeira drainage, though the precise timing for P. limai has not been characterised in the published literature. As in all Potamotrygonidae, the relationship between the sexes ends at mating: neither parent guards a territory, constructs a nest, nor attends the young at any stage.
Breeding
Potamotrygon limai is viviparous — it gives birth to live, fully formed young — and nourishes its developing pups through matrotrophic histotrophy, the mode of reproduction uniform across the Potamotrygonidae. Once the small initial yolk supply of the egg is exhausted, the embryos are sustained inside the uterus by a rich protein- and fat-laden secretion (histotroph, or 'uterine milk') produced by the trophonemata, glandular extensions of the uterine wall. The embryos absorb this secretion and grow to a size at which they are fully independent at birth.
Gestation in Potamotrygonidae ranges across the family from roughly three to twelve months, with litter sizes typically small — commonly a handful of pups. Data for P. limai specifically are sparse, but the family pattern of small litters and slow reproductive rate is expected to apply. Pups are born as miniature, fully functional rays that feed independently from the outset; there is no parental care after birth. This slow reproductive biology — small litters, prolonged gestation, late maturity — means the species can withstand only limited levels of removal from wild populations before populations decline.
In the aquarium
Potamotrygon limai is encountered in the specialist freshwater stingray trade but remains uncommon, and it is an advanced species that demands serious commitment. Published minimum aquarium volumes start at approximately 1,130 US gal, and floor area is the critical dimension: a wide, low tank with a floor measured in square metres and sufficient length and width to allow the adult ray to turn freely is necessary. Height is largely irrelevant. The substrate must be a deep bed of fine, soft sand — the ray buries regularly, and coarse or sharp substrates abrade and infect the disc.
Water quality requirements are exacting. The skin is scaleless and thin, and Potamotrygonidae are acutely sensitive to ammonia at any detectable level and to accumulated nitrate; heavy biological filtration and large, frequent water changes are mandatory rather than optional. No salt should be added. Copper-based medications are toxic and must never be used; most other standard fish medications should be approached with caution. Aggressive or fin-nipping tankmates are incompatible. The venomous tail spine is capable of inflicting a serious, intensely painful wound — appropriate caution is required at all times when working in or around the tank, and keeping the species where children have unsupervised access is inadvisable. Many jurisdictions require licences or prohibit keeping freshwater stingrays; local regulations should be verified before acquisition. Captive-bred stock, when available, is strongly preferred over wild-caught animals.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Potamotrygon limai as Near Threatened in March 2021, reflecting the twin pressures of a restricted range and ongoing threats to its habitat. The species is known only from the upper Madeira drainage, a single major river system — a narrow endemic footprint that leaves little buffer against localised decline. The Madeira and its tributaries face significant alteration from hydroelectric projects, deforestation, and mercury contamination from illegal and small-scale gold mining operations, all of which degrade or fragment the sandy riverbed habitats on which the species depends.
Collection for the ornamental aquarium trade adds a further layer of pressure on a fish that reproduces slowly: small litters, extended gestation, and late sexual maturity mean that wild populations recover slowly from elevated removal rates. While Potamotrygon limai does not appear on CITES appendices by name, Brazilian species of Potamotrygon are included in CITES Appendix III under a Brazilian designation, providing some regulation of export. Effective conservation requires sustained monitoring of population status, management of harvest, and protection of the sandy riverine habitats on which the species depends — priorities that intersect with the broader threats to Amazonian freshwater biodiversity.
