Taxonomy & naming
Porotergus gimbeli was described by Max Ellis in 1912, with the holotype collected in British Guiana during the Gimbel Expedition of 1911 — the source of the specific epithet. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every gymnotiform, it is defined less by its outward shape than by two linked features: an electric organ that generates a continuous field around the body, and a single long anal fin that does almost all the swimming, replacing the dorsal and tail fins that most fish rely on.
Within Apteronotidae, the electric organ is built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, which gives the family the fastest and most refined wave-type discharges of any knifefish group — a genuinely different electrical toolkit from the pulse-type signals used by Gymnotus or the strong, muscle-derived organ of the electric eel. A molecular phylogenetic study places Porotergus gimbeli close to Porotergus sambaibensis, with roughly 3.7% genetic divergence between them, confirming the genus placement. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the Gymnotiformes are entirely unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues from a different order altogether.
Morphology
Porotergus gimbeli reaches about 9.5 in in total length, based on a holotype of 8 in and paratypes ranging from 6.5–9.5 in; specimens examined in later surveys have run somewhat smaller, in the 4–7.5 in range. As in other ghost knifefishes, the body is laterally compressed and blade-like, tapering toward the tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin — propulsion instead comes from a long ribbon of an anal fin running along most of the underside, which can drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease.
The feature that distinguishes Porotergus gimbeli from its relatives is a prominent swelling on the chin, a character noted specifically in taxonomic work on the genus. The skin is scaleless, smooth and unarmoured, and carries the sensory pores that read the electric field generated by the organ running down the body. Beyond these points the species' fine morphology is not well documented in accessible literature — much of what is known comes from museum specimens rather than field observation of live fish.
Habitat
Porotergus gimbeli is found in the lowland Amazon basin, with records from Brazil and Peru, and the type locality in British Guiana (present-day Guyana). It is described as a typical component of deep river channel habitats — the main, flowing channels of large lowland rivers rather than backwaters, floodplain lakes or marginal vegetation, which sets it apart ecologically from many of the smaller, more sedentary gymnotiforms found in still or slow water.
Its habits are described as benthopelagic: it lives and forages in and above the riverbed rather than at the surface, in the perpetually dark, turbid water of a deep channel where vision is of little use. That darkness is precisely the environment electrolocation is suited to, and it is consistent with the pattern seen across Apteronotidae, whose electric sense lets them operate confidently in water too murky or too deep for sight to matter. Detailed water chemistry data for the species' native range has not been documented in the sources reviewed here.
Feeding
Porotergus gimbeli is recorded as a benthic invertebrate feeder, taking prey from or near the riverbed rather than hunting in open water. This fits the broader pattern in Apteronotidae, where fish forage at night for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and similar animals — locating them largely by electrolocation rather than sight, probing the substrate and sensing the way prey distorts the electric field around the body.
Beyond the general classification as a benthic invertebrate feeder, the specific diet composition of Porotergus gimbeli in the wild is not detailed in the sources available, and nothing is documented about feeding behaviour in captivity — the species is not established in the aquarium trade.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented specifically for Porotergus gimbeli. Across Apteronotidae generally, the wave-type electric organ discharge is known to carry information beyond simple electrolocation — signalling identity, sex and readiness to spawn, with paired individuals in studied species shifting discharge frequency during courtship in a kind of electrical exchange. It is reasonable to expect a similar signalling role in this species given its family placement, but this has not been confirmed for Porotergus gimbeli itself, and the point should be read as inference from relatives rather than a documented observation.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Porotergus gimbeli is essentially undocumented — no spawning behaviour, egg description or parental care has been reported in the literature reviewed. Like other Apteronotidae, it can be assumed to be an egg-layer that spawns among cover rather than a live-bearer, but this is inferred from the family rather than observed directly in this species. Porotergus gimbeli is not a species kept in the aquarium hobby; it is known from museum specimens and river surveys, not from the ornamental trade, and no husbandry information exists for it. What can be said follows from its family and habits: as an Apteronotidae, it would be scaleless and therefore sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or harsh medications, and as a deep-channel, benthopelagic fish it would be expected to want dim conditions, cover, and a strong preference for staying out of bright light — the same requirements that make its relative the black ghost knifefish a demanding, specialist fish rather than a casual community choice. None of this is a substitute for real husbandry data, which simply does not exist for this species.
Conservation
Porotergus gimbeli has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). It is known from a limited number of records across the lowland Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru and Guyana, and — as a deep-channel specialist — its population trends and sensitivity to habitat pressures such as damming, dredging or pollution in the main river channels are not documented. Its conservation status should be read as data sparse rather than as evidence of security.
