Taxonomy & naming
Porotergus gymnotus was described by M. D. Ellis in Eigenmann's 1912 work, with the type locality given as Amatuk, Guyana, and the holotype held at the Field Museum of Natural History (FMNH 53575). It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all Apteronotidae, its electric organ is built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, giving it a fast, continuous wave-type discharge rather than the pulsed signal of families such as Gymnotus.
The genus Porotergus is defined by the absence of scales on the dorsal region anterior to the dorsal mid-sagittal electroreceptive filament, by enlarged scales above the lateral line, by teeth present in both jaws, and by a long mouth cleft that reaches or passes the vertical through the front margin of the eye. A 2010 genus review (Copeia) and more recent molecular phylogenetic work have worked to clarify boundaries within Porotergus, including the description of additional species from neighbouring river systems — a sign that the genus's diversity is still being worked out. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; as with many Gymnotiformes, this is not a fish most aquarists will encounter, and the common name "knifefish" it shares with Asian featherbacks (Chitala, Notopterus) reflects convergent body shape only — the two groups are not related.
Morphology
Examined specimens range from roughly 2.5–4.5 in total length, making Porotergus gymnotus a modestly sized member of the ghost knifefish family. As in other Apteronotidae, the body is laterally compressed and blade-like, without a dorsal fin or a conventional tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave beneath the body, letting the fish move forwards or backwards with equal ease. A slender fleshy filament runs along the dorsal midline, carrying the electroreceptors that give the genus its name.
A distinguishing morphological feature noted in recent phylogenetic work is the lack of scales on the mid-dorsal region between the nape and the dorsal electroreceptive filament, distinguishing it from some congeners. The species is scaleless overall, like other members of its family, and produces a wave-type electric organ discharge used for electrolocation in the dark, fast water it inhabits and, presumably, for communication with conspecifics — though the details of its signal have not been documented in the cached literature to the same depth as in better-studied relatives.
Habitat
Porotergus gymnotus is native to the Essequibo and Maroni river drainages of the Guianas (Guyana and French Guiana), with records also noted from Bolivia and Brazil within the wider Amazon basin distribution recognised by the Catalog of Fishes. Notably, it occupies rapids — a rheophilic, fast-flowing habitat distinct from the deep, slower channels favoured by congeners such as P. duende and P. gimbeli, and this habitat preference appears to be a real ecological difference within the genus rather than incidental variation.
It is a freshwater, benthopelagic species, living and foraging near the riverbed in shallow, flowing water. As with other ghost knifefishes, an electric sense suited to low-visibility conditions likely serves it well in the turbulence and turbidity of rapids, where sight would be of limited use for locating prey among rocks and current.
Feeding

Across the Apteronotidae, the wave-type electric organ discharge is known to carry information about a fish's identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and in well-studied relatives such as Apteronotus leptorhynchus, courting pairs shift their discharge frequencies in a kind of electrical duet. It is reasonable to assume some version of this electric signalling plays a role in P. gymnotus courtship as well, given its shared wave-type discharge and family membership, but this is inference from the family's general biology rather than a documented observation of this species.

Like other Apteronotidae, it is presumed to be an egg-layer, and the family as a whole is only rarely bred in captivity, with no meaningful parental care known in any well-studied relative. Any care regime offered here is therefore inference from its family and from a congener (P. duende), not documented experience with this species.
Were it to be kept, its biology points to the same non-negotiables as other ghost knifefishes: it is scaleless, and so needs great care with medications — no copper-based treatments, reduced doses of anything else — plus clean, well-oxygenated water, since it comes from fast rapids rather than still water. Given its rheophilic habitat, water movement is likely important, unusually so for a family whose other members mostly favour calmer channels. Dim lighting and secure cover would suit its nocturnal, electrosensory lifestyle, and it should not be housed with fish or invertebrates small enough to be hunted at night. Aquarists should not seek out wild-caught specimens of a poorly known, narrow-range species like this one; there is no captive-bred source to recommend.
Conservation
Porotergus gymnotus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no status. Its known range in the Essequibo and Maroni rapids, extending into parts of the Amazon basin, is not a heavily industrialised region, but rheophilic species tied to specific rapids habitat can be sensitive to changes such as damming, mining-related sediment and pollution, or deforestation along their home rivers — pressures documented broadly across Guiana Shield rivers even where this particular species' population trend has not been studied.
