Porotergus maroon is a rheophilic ghost knifefish described in 2025 from the fast-flowing rapids of the Coppename, Maroni and Mana rivers in Suriname and French Guiana, where for decades it had been misidentified as the wider-ranging Porotergus gymnotus. Like every member of the family Apteronotidae, it is a matte-dark, blade-bodied, scaleless fish that has almost no use for its eyes: it navigates and hunts in the dark, tannin-stained water by generating a weak electric field around its body and reading how that field is distorted by rocks, prey and other fish. Its electric organ discharge is wave-type — a continuous, high-frequency signal, among the most refined electrosensory systems in the animal kingdom — and it is this private electric world, not sight, that governs how the species finds food, avoids obstacles in the current, and recognises others of its kind. Data on the species remain sparse; it is currently unassessed for conservation status.

Taxonomy & naming

Porotergus maroon was described in 2025 by de Santana, Le Bail, Peixoto, Wan Tong You, Gianeti, Eon, Loeb, Mol and Covain in Systematics and Biodiversity, as part of a revision of rheophilic ghost knifefishes in the eastern Guianas. For several decades specimens from the Coppename, Maroni and Mana river systems had been recorded under the name Porotergus gymnotus, a much more widely distributed species; molecular and morphological work showed the Guiana-shield population to be distinct, and it was split off and named maroon after the Maroni River that forms part of its range.

The species belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation in dark or turbid water and for communication with other individuals of its species. Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, giving them a fast, continuous wave-type discharge and the most refined electric sense of any knifefish family. Despite the shared common name, these fish are entirely unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Porotergus maroon shares the general ghost-knifefish body plan: laterally compressed, blade-shaped, and tapering smoothly to a whip-like tail, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin. Locomotion comes from a single long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, which lets the fish move forward and backward with equal ease — useful in the tight spaces and reversing currents of rapids. The genus Porotergus, like its relatives, is scaleless, with dark, matte coloration typical of the family.

Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with sensory pores across the skin that read the resulting field — the anatomical basis of the wave-type electric organ discharge used for electrolocation and communication. Precise size and detailed external measurements for P. maroon are not well documented; related Porotergus species in the genus range roughly 3.5–10.5 in in total length, and this species is expected to fall within that range, though the cache does not give a confirmed maximum for maroon specifically. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for this newly described species.

Habitat

Porotergus maroon is known from rapids — fast, rocky, well-oxygenated stretches of river — in the Coppename, Maroni and Mana river systems of Suriname and French Guiana, on the Guiana Shield of northeastern South America. This rheophilic (current-loving) habit sets it apart from many of its relatives, which favour slower channels and pools; life in rapids demands a body and swimming style suited to holding position and manoeuvring in strong flow, and the anal-fin-driven, reversible locomotion of ghost knifefishes suits that well.

As with other Apteronotidae, the water is warm, soft to moderately mineralised, and near-neutral to acidic, and it is typically dim — turbid with current-churned sediment or stained by tannins from surrounding forest, conditions where the electric sense does the work that eyes cannot. The species is active mainly at night, using electrolocation to navigate the rock-strewn rapids and to find food in the dark.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data specific to Porotergus maroon are not available; the cache does not record direct observations. By analogy with the wider family, ghost knifefishes are nocturnal carnivores that hunt small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — sheltering among rocks and debris during the day and becoming active after dark, locating prey largely through electrolocation rather than sight.

Given its rheophilic habitat, P. maroon likely forages among the rock crevices and gravel of its rapids, picking off invertebrates dislodged or sheltering in the current. As in other Apteronotidae, courtship in Porotergus maroon is expected to be mediated substantially by electricity. What is known for the family points to spawning among cover — rocks, root tangles or crevices in this species' rapids habitat — rather than any elaborate nest-building or pair-bonding behaviour. Breeding

Porotergus maroon is an egg-layer, in keeping with the rest of the family Apteronotidae, but breeding biology for this species is essentially undocumented — it was only described in 2025 and is not established in the aquarium trade. Across Apteronotidae generally, captive breeding is rare; most trade fish in the family are wild-caught or, for a handful of commercially significant species, farm-bred under hormone induction rather than bred voluntarily in home aquaria.

No parental care is documented for the family beyond the point of spawning. For P. maroon specifically, the honest position is that breeding in captivity is unreported and the species is not currently part of the aquarium trade; any statement about how or whether it would spawn in an aquarium would be speculation rather than fact.

In the aquarium

Porotergus maroon is not an established aquarium fish — it was described in 2025 from rapids in Suriname and French Guiana and there is no record in the cache of it being kept or traded. Should it appear in the hobby, the general care principles for Apteronotidae would apply: because it is scaleless, it would need careful handling of medications (no copper-based treatments, reduced doses generally) and would be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, requiring mature filtration and clean, warm, gently-to-strongly moving water reflecting its rapids origin.

As a nocturnal, electrosensory predator, it would need dim lighting, secure cover such as rock crevices to retreat into by day, and tankmates too large to be eaten and not prone to nipping its fins. Given its rheophilic origins, strong water flow and high oxygenation would likely matter more for this species than for slower-water relatives. All of this is extrapolated from family-level husbandry rather than documented for the species, which should not be assumed to be a viable aquarium fish based on current information.

Conservation

Porotergus maroon has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2025, it currently carries no status beyond Data Deficient or effectively Not Evaluated. This is typical for newly described, narrow-range Neotropical fish, particularly rheophilic species restricted to specific river rapids that have not been the subject of dedicated conservation surveys.

Its known range — rapids of the Coppename, Maroni and Mana rivers on the Guiana Shield — is relatively confined, which places it among the narrow-range endemics that the family's more widespread members are not. Potential pressures typical of Guiana-shield rivers include damming (which alters or eliminates the rapids habitat this species depends on), small-scale mining and associated sediment or mercury pollution, and deforestation affecting water quality.
