Taxonomy & naming
Pseudancistrus kwinti was formally described by Philip W. Willink (Field Museum of Natural History), Jan H. Mol (Anton de Kom University of Suriname), and Barry Chernoff (Wesleyan University) in Zootaxa volume 2332 (pages 40–48) in 2010. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the name as valid within the genus Pseudancistrus, subfamily Hypostominae, family Loricariidae.
The species is distinguished from all other members of Pseudancistrus by a suite of characters in combination: dentary papillae are absent; the mid-dorsal plate row is complete; body coloration is mottled or banded; hypertrophied odontodes develop along the snout margin; and the cheek plates are only weakly evertible. No L-number has been assigned, consistent with the species never having appeared in the ornamental trade.
The specific epithet kwinti is a noun in apposition honouring the Kwinti people — an Afro-Surinamese maroon community descended from escaped enslaved Africans who settled along the Coppename River. The Kwinti have lived in the central Suriname rainforest for centuries, and the type locality lies within their traditional territory. The name is a deliberate acknowledgment of the community's relationship with the landscape where this fish was found.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in (SL), placing P. kwinti among the smaller Pseudancistrus. The body follows the stocky, heavily armoured form characteristic of the genus: the dorsal surface is covered in overlapping bony scutes, the head is broad and flattened, and the ventral surface is naked in the abdominal region. Coloration is mottled or banded — a pattern that affords camouflage against the granite and gneiss outcrops typical of Guiana Shield rivers.
Hypertrophied odontodes along the snout margin are a defining diagnostic feature; these enlarged spines project forward from the rostrum and are more developed than in related species. The cheek plates are weakly evertible, contrasting with the strongly evertible plates of some Pseudancistrus relatives. Dentary papillae — soft projections on the lower jaw present in certain hypostomines — are absent.
Sexual dimorphism is not formally documented for this species. In Pseudancistrus generally, breeding males develop larger interopercular odontodes on the pectoral spines than females, and odontode development on the head may be more pronounced in males; females are typically broader-bodied when gravid. These patterns are inferred, not confirmed, for P. kwinti.
Habitat
Pseudancistrus kwinti is endemic to the Coppename River drainage within the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering roughly 1.6 million hectares of pristine Guiana Shield rainforest. The reserve represents one of the largest intact tropical ecosystems on Earth, and the Coppename River drains its heart.
Guiana Shield rivers flowing over ancient granitic and metamorphic rock tend to be blackwater or clearwater systems — stained with tannins, low in dissolved minerals, and moderately acidic. Interior Suriname rivers typically carry pH values in the range of 5.5–7.0 and temperatures between 25 and 82 °F, though no formal water chemistry data have been published specifically for the P. kwinti type locality. The rocky substrate and swift currents characteristic of upland Shield rivers provide the hard surfaces that Pseudancistrus graze and the crevices they use for shelter and spawning.
Feeding
No dietary study has been conducted on Pseudancistrus kwinti specifically. The genus as a whole is associated with aufwuchs and algae grazing on hard rocky surfaces in fast-flowing water — scraping the thin biological layer of algae, diatoms, periphyton, and associated invertebrates from boulders and bedrock using a ventrally positioned mouth and fine teeth.
Detritus and organic matter deposited in rock crevices likely supplement the diet. Where congeners have been kept in aquaria, they accept algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and small amounts of protein-rich invertebrate foods. Driftwood, while not the primary food source as in xylophagous genera, may contribute biofilm and fine organic matter.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Pseudancistrus kwinti has not been observed or described. Members of Pseudancistrus are inferred to follow the general loricariid pattern of cave or crevice spawning, with males establishing and defending a territory centred on a suitable rocky cavity. The hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and pectoral spine that characterise Pseudancistrus males are interpreted as secondary sexual structures used in male–male competition and potentially in courtship.
Data sparse — reproductive biology of this species remains undocumented.
Breeding
No captive breeding records exist for Pseudancistrus kwinti, and no specimens are known to have entered the ornamental trade. Based on the genus-level biology of Pseudancistrus and related hypostomines, spawning is expected to occur in rocky crevices or caves, with the male remaining to guard and fan the clutch. Paternal brood care is the norm in this lineage.

In the aquarium
Pseudancistrus kwinti is not available in the ornamental trade and is not kept in home aquaria. It is known only from scientific collections in the Central Suriname Nature Reserve. Any aquarium husbandry notes that exist for the genus are drawn from congeners rather than this species.
For reference, Pseudancistrus species in general are understood to require well-oxygenated, clean, moderately acidic to neutral water; a current; rocky substrate with hiding crevices; and an aufwuchs-based diet supplemented with algae wafers and vegetables. Given P. kwinti's small adult size (under 4 in SL), a modest tank footprint would theoretically suffice if the species were ever to become available — but it is not.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudancistrus kwinti as Least Concern in 2020. This assessment reflects the species' occurrence entirely within the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, one of the most effectively protected natural areas in the Neotropics. The reserve's UNESCO World Heritage status and its remoteness provide a high degree of de facto habitat security, and no significant threats are documented at present.
The narrow endemism of P. kwinti to a single river drainage is nonetheless a factor to monitor. Species restricted to a single watershed are inherently vulnerable to any event — disease, pollution, hydrological change — that affects that system. The pristine condition of the Coppename River basin within the reserve is currently the species' strongest conservation asset.
