Sternarchorhynchus freemani is a tube-snouted ghost knifefish known only from the Lower Potaro River in Guyana's Essequibo basin, part of a genus of slender, drab-coloured Apteronotidae that spend their lives feeling their way through dark river channels with a weak electric field rather than sight. Like its relatives it has no dorsal fin and no true tail, propelling itself forward and backward on the ripple of a single long anal fin, and its electric organ produces a fast, continuous wave-type discharge used both to sense the world around it and to signal its identity to other knifefish. Described only in 2010 and named for the American ichthyologist Bryon J. "Bud" Freeman, it is a scientifically documented species that almost never appears in the aquarium trade — a fish known from museum specimens and a single river system rather than from home tanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Sternarchorhynchus freemani was described by Casey B. de Santana and Richard P. Vari in 2010 as part of a broader revision of the genus Sternarchorhynchus, which sits in the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all Gymnotiformes it is a bony fish, but an unusual one: the order is defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by any resemblance to typical aquarium fish, and the Apteronotidae are set apart within it by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them a fast, continuous wave-type discharge.

The genus Sternarchorhynchus is recognisable by its elongated, tube-like snout, quite different from the blunter face of the familiar black ghost (Apteronotus albifrons). The species epithet honours Bryon J. "Bud" Freeman of the University of Georgia. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Sternarchorhynchus and the rest of the Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the similar blade-shaped body is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

Sternarchorhynchus freemani has the elongated, laterally compressed, blade-like body typical of ghost knifefishes, extended further by the tube-shaped snout that gives the genus its common name. There is no dorsal fin and no distinct tail fin; a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside provides all of the fish's propulsion, thrown into travelling waves that let it move forward or backward with equal ease. The skin is scaleless, as in all Apteronotidae.

FishBase reports the species growing to about 8 in total length in males and 6.5 in in females, making it a modest-sized member of the genus. Running beneath the skin is the electric organ, paired with rows of sensory pores that read the field it generates — the sensory system this fish relies on far more than eyesight in the dim river channels it inhabits. Data on external sexing beyond the size difference between males and females is sparse.

Habitat

This species is known only from the Essequibo basin of Guyana, specifically the Lower Potaro River, with its type locality at Amatuk on that river — a narrow, single-river-system distribution rather than the broad, multi-country range seen in some other ghost knifefishes. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater benthopelagic species, living in the water column near the riverbed rather than right on the bottom or at the surface.

As with other Apteronotidae, S. freemani is a fish of the dark: it inhabits river channels where light penetration is limited and vision is of little use, relying instead on its electric sense to navigate, find food and detect other fish. Detailed water-chemistry data for the Lower Potaro is not available in the cited sources; conditions typical of Guyana Shield rivers in this basin are expected to be warm and softer, blackwater-influenced flows, consistent with the wider habitat preferences of the genus.

Feeding

Sternarchorhynchus freemani is a predator of small invertebrates, with FishBase recording its diet as aquatic insect larvae and annelid worms. It most likely locates this prey, much of it hidden in sediment or among submerged debris, largely through electrolocation — sensing the way buried or concealed animals distort its self-generated electric field — a hunting strategy shared across the ghost knifefishes and especially valuable in the low-visibility river channels the genus favours.

In well-studied relatives such as the brown ghost knifefish, males and females shift their discharge frequency during encounters in a kind of electrical exchange, and this signalling is thought to play a role in courtship and mate recognition across the family's wave-type species.

Whether S. freemani follows this same pattern of electric courtship has not been directly observed or reported; the inference is drawn from its shared wave-type discharge and family membership rather than from direct study of this species. Data sparse.

Breeding

There is no documented breeding record for Sternarchorhynchus freemani, in the wild or in captivity. As with most Apteronotidae outside of a handful of aquarium-trade species, this genus is essentially unknown from spawning observations; it is presumed to be an egg-layer, consistent with the reproductive mode of the family, but no details of spawning site, egg number, or developmental time have been reported.

In the aquarium

Sternarchorhynchus freemani is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense; it is known from scientific specimens collected from a single Guyanese river system and does not appear to be established in the ornamental trade. Any care guidance therefore has to be extrapolated cautiously from the wider genus and family rather than from direct experience with this species.

Were it ever to appear in the hobby, the general precautions that apply to all Apteronotidae would hold: it is scaleless and so would be expected to be sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and copper-based or harsh medications, which should be used at reduced doses if at all; as a benthopelagic hunter from dim river channels it would need cover, subdued lighting, and stable, mature water rather than a brightly lit community tank. Given how little is documented about this species' husbandry needs, it should not be treated as a beginner or general-hobby fish, and any specimens encountered are far more likely to be part of scientific collections than the aquarium trade.

Conservation

Sternarchorhynchus freemani is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects the absence of documented threats to the species rather than an abundance of population data — this is a narrow-range endemic, known only from the Lower Potaro River within the Essequibo basin in Guyana, and information on its population trend and size is sparse.

As a single-river endemic, the species would in principle be vulnerable to habitat disruption within that system — mining, damming, deforestation or pollution affecting the Potaro or wider Essequibo basin — but no specific pressures on this species have been documented in the cited sources.
