Anableps microlepis is a four-eyed fish — a surface-skimming livebearer of the muddy estuaries and mangrove fringes of Atlantic South America, from Trinidad and Venezuela south to the Amazon delta. Its name comes from the most arresting feature any aquarium fish can claim: each eye is split horizontally into two functional halves by a band of tissue, so the fish swims at the waterline seeing simultaneously into the air above and the water below. A second oddity hides beneath: like the rest of the small family Anablepidae, it bears live young after internal fertilisation, and its sexual anatomy is lateralised — males are effectively 'right-handed' or 'left-handed' and can only pair with a female of the matching orientation. It is a famous fish in the eye-research literature and an uncommon, specialist subject in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Anableps microlepis was described by the German naturalists Johann Wilhelm Müller and Franz Hermann Troschel in 1844. It belongs to the small New World family Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes, onesided livebearers and white-eyes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes, and is placed in the subfamily Anablepinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Anableps microlepis Müller & Troschel, 1844 as the valid name. FishBase records it under SpecCode 7380, with the family coordinated by Michael J. Ghedotti.

The genus Anableps is small and contains only the four-eyed fishes proper, the most familiar of which is the congener Anableps anableps. The two are similar in form and habit; A. microlepis is distinguished in part by its finer, smaller scales, which is exactly what its epithet records. The genus name Anableps is built from the Greek ana (up) and blepo/blepsis (to glance, sight), a direct reference to the upward-looking divided eyes that define these fishes. The species epithet microlepis combines Greek mikros (small) and lepis (scale) — 'small-scaled' — separating it from its larger-scaled relatives. Because much of the dedicated literature and hobby care information addresses the genus or the better-known A. anableps, several biological details below are drawn at the genus level and noted as such where species-specific data for A. microlepis are sparse.

Morphology

Anableps microlepis is an elongate, cylindrical, surface-oriented fish reaching a maximum of about 12.5 in total length, with a common length nearer 6 in and a maximum published weight of around 500 g. The body is built for life pressed up against the underside of the water film: a flattened dorsal profile, eyes raised turret-like on top of the head, and a low-set mouth.

The signature feature is the eye. Each eyeball protrudes above the head and is divided horizontally by a band of pigmented tissue into an upper and a lower half, each with its own pupil aperture and a single lens shaped to correct for the very different optics of air and water. The result is that the fish, riding at the surface, sees a sharp image both above and below the waterline at once — projecting two images onto the retina of each eye. This divided-cornea arrangement has made Anableps a standard subject in vision and eye-development research. The fins are otherwise unremarkable for a cyprinodontiform, and the scales — as the species name says — are small and fine.

As in other livebearing poeciliiforms, the sexes differ in the anal fin: the male's is modified into an intromittent organ used to inseminate the female internally. In Anableps this organ and the corresponding female opening are asymmetrical, or lateralised, a structural peculiarity discussed under Mating below.

Habitat

Anableps microlepis is a coastal, estuarine fish of tropical Atlantic South America. Its range runs from Trinidad and Venezuela south along the Guianas to the Amazon delta in Brazil, broadly between about 13°N and 35°S. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater and brackish, demersal, non-migratory, tropical species — but 'demersal' undersells how thoroughly it is a creature of the surface and the shoreline rather than open or deep water.

It is mainly found in fresh and brackish estuaries near river mouths, on tidal mudflats, and along the margins of coastal mangrove forest. The California Academy of Sciences describes the genus as living at the water surface in coastal mangroves, where the divided eyes let the fish watch for aerial predators and shoreline prey while still monitoring the water beneath. These are turbid, tidally flushed, soft-bottomed habitats of fluctuating salinity, and the species' tolerance of both fresh and brackish water reflects that. The fish is gregarious but in restricted schools of roughly a dozen individuals, and may also be seen singly or in pairs.

Feeding

Anableps microlepis is a low-trophic-level surface feeder, with FishBase placing it at a trophic level of about 2.8. Riding at the waterline of mudflats and mangrove channels, it is positioned to take small items from the surface film and the uppermost water — small invertebrates, insects that fall onto the water, and the detritus, algae and micro-organisms of the rich estuarine sediment surface. Detailed gut-content studies specific to A. microlepis are sparse in this cache, so the picture is drawn from its habitat and trophic position rather than a published diet list.

In the aquarium the genus is treated as an unfussy carnivore-leaning omnivore that takes a range of meaty surface and mid-water foods. Because the fish naturally feeds at and just below the surface, floating and slow-sinking foods suit it best, and a varied diet of small live, frozen and prepared items is the usual recommendation. As with most surface specialists, food is taken from the top of the water column rather than scavenged off the bottom.

Mating

Anableps is viviparous: fertilisation is internal, the male delivering sperm to the female through a modified, tube-like anal-fin organ analogous to the gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers. What sets Anableps apart from a guppy is that this anatomy is lateralised — sided. The male's intromittent organ can be swung only to the left or only to the right, and the female's genital opening is likewise oriented to one side. A consequence first noted in the aquarium literature for the genus is that a 'right-handed' male can mate only with a 'left-handed' female and vice versa, so not every pairing in a mixed group is mechanically possible.

Despite that constraint, breeders of the genus report that mating itself presents few problems when a mixed-sex group is kept together, because a group of mixed orientation contains compatible pairs. The fish do not appear to require elaborate courtship arenas; pairing happens within the loose surface-dwelling school. Specific courtship behaviour for A. microlepis is not documented in this cache, and the account here follows the well-described genus-level pattern shared with A. anableps.

Breeding

Following internal fertilisation, female Anableps gestate the developing embryos internally and give birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs — the defining reproductive mode of the family. The young are born comparatively large and well developed, as is typical of fishes that invest in live birth over high egg numbers; correspondingly, broods are modest in number rather than running to the hundreds of fry a guppy can stack up over successive broods.

Species-specific figures for A. microlepis — brood size, gestation length and breeding season — were not located in this cache pass and should be regarded as data-sparse; FishBase's summary does not give them. What is established for the genus is the broad pattern: internal fertilisation, viviparity, no egg-scattering stage, and the lateralised mating anatomy that shapes which adults can pair. Superfetation — the carrying of more than one brood at different developmental stages at once, known in some poeciliid livebearers — is not documented for Anableps in this cache and should not be assumed for the species.

In the aquarium

Anableps microlepis is only occasionally offered in the aquarium trade, and it is a specialist's fish rather than a community-tank livebearer. Its requirements follow directly from its biology: it is a large, brackish, surface-bound estuarine fish, and replicating that is the whole challenge. Genus-level keeping advice calls for shallow or low water with generous surface area and haul-out or shoreline structure, mimicking the tidal mudflat and mangrove edge — a setup unlike a conventional deep planted tank.

Because the fish lives at the air–water interface and grows to around 12 in, it needs a long, wide, shallow system with secure cover (it is an active surface fish and a jumper by habitat), brackish water management, and the space to hold a small school of about a dozen — its natural social unit — without crowding. It is a gregarious species that does best in a group rather than singly. The eyes that make it famous also make it sensitive to surface conditions, so a clean, stable air-side environment matters as much as the water itself. None of this is beginner husbandry; the species rewards an aquarist set up specifically for brackish surface-dwellers.

Conservation

Anableps microlepis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species page (id 162693427, assessment 162693431) carries the LC category with no major threats noted, supported by the fish's wide Atlantic-coast estuarine range from Trinidad and Venezuela to the Amazon delta. FishBase additionally records the species as having Low resilience, with a minimum population doubling time estimated at 4.5 to 14 years, though its fishing vulnerability is low (about 22 of 100).

The species supports subsistence fisheries within its range and appears in the commercial aquarium trade, and it is harmless to humans. Its longer-term security is tied to the health of the coastal mangrove and estuarine habitats it depends on, as the California Academy of Sciences notes for the four-eyed fishes generally — these surface specialists of the mangrove fringe are only as secure as the shorelines they live along. It is not listed under CITES or CMS.
