The swamp guppy is the guppy's wilder cousin: a tiny, hardy livebearer of the brackish ditches and coastal swamps from Trinidad to the mouth of the Amazon. Described half a century after the common guppy and long shuffled between the genera Poecilia and Micropoecilia, Poecilia picta looks and behaves so much like its famous relative that the two will even cross and produce fertile young. In the hobby it is a connoisseur's livebearer — small, undemanding of anything but warm, hard, alkaline water, and carrying in its wild and selectively bred orange males a quieter echo of the colour explosion that made the guppy a household fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia picta was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1913, roughly half a century after the common guppy, Poecilia reticulata, had entered the scientific literature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — lists the species under Poecilia (Regan, 1913), and FishBase follows that placement within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, order Cyprinodontiformes. The species epithet picta is Latin for "painted," a reference to the colour of the males, and the genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" or "variegated" — a name that fits the whole guild of New World livebearers.

The generic placement of this fish is genuinely contested. Much of the hobby and a strand of the taxonomic literature place picta in the genus Micropoecilia, alongside a cluster of similar small species — Micropoecilia bifurca, M. branneri, M. minima and M. parae — all of which resemble miniature guppies. Catalog of Fishes and FishBase nonetheless retain it in Poecilia, and that is the name used here. The argument for keeping picta close to the true guppy is partly reproductive: Poecilia picta and Poecilia reticulata can hybridise and produce viable, fertile offspring, whereas crosses between guppies and mollies are rare and generally sterile. Studies of placenta evolution in the Poecilia (Micropoecilia) group (Meredith, Pires, Reznick and Springer, 2010) have used these species to probe how live-bearing reproduction itself has diversified.

Morphology

Poecilia picta is a very small fish with the strong sexual dimorphism typical of the guppies. Males are diminutive, reaching only about 1 in (roughly an inch) in total length, while females are larger and deeper-bodied at around 2 in (about an inch and a half). In overall shape and proportion the species is a near-twin of the common guppy: a slender, surface-oriented toothcarp with an upturned mouth, large eyes and a rounded caudal fin, lacking the elaborate finnage of fancy domestic guppy strains.

The sexes differ in the usual poeciliid way. Females are comparatively plain — silvery to olive, robust, and carrying a dark gravid patch at the rear of the abdomen when pregnant. Males are the coloured sex, and in picta this colour is more restrained than in a fancy guppy: wild males show scatterings of orange and dark markings, and the popular "red picta" of the hobby is an orange morph, very likely a captive selection rather than a wild population, since the coloration fades over generations if it is not actively bred for — and tends to be lost first in the females. The defining male structure is the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that delivers sperm to the female internally, the shared hallmark of the live-bearing Poeciliidae.

Habitat

Poecilia picta is a coastal, lowland species ranging across Central and South America from Trinidad south and east to the delta of the Amazon River. Unusually among the guppies, it is at home in mildly brackish water: it is characteristically found in canals, drainage ditches and the edges of swamps where fresh and salt water mingle, though it also ventures well inland into pure fresh water. This tolerance of salinity is the reason for its common name, the swamp guppy.

The water it favours is warm, hard and alkaline. FishBase records the species from tropical conditions around 79–82 °F, with a pH of roughly 7.5–8.2 and high hardness (dH 20–40). Hobbyist breeders report that the fish thrives in hard, alkaline well water — pH 8.0–8.5 is tolerated comfortably — and that it is, like the common guppy, intolerant of sustained cool temperatures, suffering below roughly 55 °F (about 55 °F). Its physiological flexibility, hardiness and live-bearing fecundity give it a high biological resilience, with population doubling times estimated at well under fifteen months. It is benthopelagic and non-migratory, living out its life in the same shallow coastal waters where it is born.

Feeding

Poecilia picta is an omnivorous micro-predator and grazer, sitting at a low trophic level (around 2.7) and feeding more or less continuously on whatever small items its shallow habitats provide — algae, detritus, micro-invertebrates and the larvae of aquatic insects, including mosquito larvae. Like the common guppy, it is a near-constant feeder rather than a hunter of large prey, picking at the substrate and the water column throughout the day.

In the aquarium it is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods. Breeders feed high-protein pellets and flake as a staple and report that the fish relish small live and frozen foods — mosquito larvae, Daphnia and Moina especially. As with all small, constantly grazing livebearers, several modest feedings a day suit it better than one large meal, and a varied diet that includes some live or frozen invertebrates improves both colour and breeding condition. The species is a willing eater and conditions readily for spawning when well fed.

Mating

Reproduction in Poecilia picta is internal and, in practice, continuous — the standard poeciliid pattern. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male transfers sperm using his gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ, and females are able to store viable sperm internally to produce successive broods from a single mating. There is no nest, no territory and no spawning ritual in the egg-layer's sense; the whole reproductive effort is organised around the male's persistent pursuit of females.

The mating behaviour mirrors that of the common guppy closely. Females live in loose shoals while males drive hard, repeatedly nipping at the females' gravid spots and constantly attempting to mate; rival males spar with one another but without inflicting real damage. Because the males are so persistent, breeders deliberately skew colony sex ratios toward females — a recommended working ratio is on the order of six males to fifty females — so that no single female is harassed to exhaustion. This relentless male courtship, combined with internal fertilisation and sperm storage, keeps a healthy colony in near-continuous reproduction.

Breeding

Poecilia picta is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The investment is considerable — in this species the developing embryos can make up as much as a quarter of the mother's body weight near term. Brood sizes are moderate for a livebearer, with published figures of roughly eleven to twenty-five offspring per brood; warmer water speeds growth and shortens the interval between broods.

In the aquarium the species breeds freely. Females mature young, at around three to four months, and a conditioned female can produce a brood of fry roughly every four weeks. The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish that swim and feed immediately, and they grow quickly on the same micro-foods the adults take, plus newly hatched brine shrimp. Encouragingly for breeders, the swamp guppy is not a voracious fry-predator on the scale of some livebearers, so reasonable numbers can be raised in a well-planted tank without heroic measures, though cover still improves survival. The species also holds up well through inbreeding bottlenecks when selection is careful, which is part of why specialist livebearer keepers maintain it as a hobby strain.

In the aquarium

The swamp guppy is an excellent small-aquarium and nano fish — a guppy-like livebearer for keepers who want something a step off the beaten path. It is peaceful, active and best kept as a colony, and a 10-gallon (roughly 40-litre) tank is ample for a good group. Because the males court so persistently, a female-skewed sex ratio is strongly advised to spread out the attention and give females respite. It mixes well with other small, non-predatory community fish.

Water chemistry is the one point to get right: this is a fish of hard, alkaline, warm water, and it does best at pH 8.0–8.5 with high hardness and temperatures in the high 20s Celsius — conditions under which it grows fastest and breeds most often. It tolerates mildly brackish water and even appreciates it, but does not require salt provided the water is hard and alkaline. It must be kept warm; like the common guppy it will not tolerate sustained cool temperatures. Given those conditions it is a robust, forgiving and prolific fish, well suited to a planted community of similarly sized, gentle tankmates.

Conservation

Poecilia picta is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2020. The species is widespread along the northern coast of South America, from Trinidad to the Amazon delta, abundant within its range and tolerant of a wide span of conditions from fresh to brackish water; it faces no significant species-level threat. It is not listed under CITES or CMS.

As with the common guppy, the swamp guppy's hardiness and live-bearing fecundity are exactly the traits that make it adaptable, and the responsible aquarist's concern is the familiar one for poeciliids: fish from the aquarium trade should never be released into local waters, where a tolerant, fast-breeding livebearer can establish itself outside its native range. Within its home swamps and ditches, however, Poecilia picta remains a common and secure species.
