Poecilia obscura is the quiet third member of the guppy complex — a cryptic species hidden for decades within what aquarists simply called "the guppy." Described only in 2009 from the Oropuche drainage of western Trinidad, it looks so much like the common guppy that it was teased apart not by eye but by molecular divergence and by the fine architecture of the male's gonopodium. Its specific name, obscura, "hidden," is an honest one: this is a fish whose whole biography is the story of how a familiar little livebearer turned out to be more than one species.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia obscura was described by Schories, Meyer and Schartl in 2009, in Zootaxa 2266, under the full combination Poecilia (Acanthophacelus) obscura. The type locality is the Oropuche River system of Trinidad, and the species was diagnosed as a member of the subgenus Acanthophacelus — the "guppy group" that also contains the common guppy Poecilia reticulata and Endler's livebearer Poecilia wingei. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, recognises Poecilia obscura Schories, Meyer & Schartl, 2009 as a valid species within the family Poeciliidae.

The description is unusual in that it leans heavily on cryptic, non-visual characters. The authors separated P. obscura from its close relatives chiefly through the structure of the gonopodium — specifically the comb-like spines on ray 3, which in P. obscura are relatively few (about 11 to 15) and set on a massive base, versus more numerous (roughly 14 to 18) on a slender base in P. reticulata and P. wingei — backed by mitochondrial-DNA sequence divergence. In other words, this is a species that DNA and a hand lens reveal more reliably than the naked eye. The same 2009 paper revisited the status of the Endler's guppy, situating all three Acanthophacelus species within a single, tightly knit complex.

Because it was hidden inside the broad concept of the common guppy for so long, much of the older Trinidad "guppy" literature almost certainly contains observations on P. obscura without naming it. Untangling which historical records belong to which species in the western Trinidad drainages is part of why the species matters scientifically, even though it remains obscure in the hobby.

Morphology

Poecilia obscura is a very small poeciliid built on the familiar guppy plan. The original description gives males usually up to about 1 in and females up to about 1 in in standard length, and FishBase lists a maximum of around 0.5 in SL — placing it firmly among the smallest livebearers, in the same size class as the common guppy and Endler's. As in its relatives, the sexes differ markedly: males are the smaller, slimmer, more ornamented sex, while females are larger and deeper-bodied.

The single most diagnostic feature is not colour but the male gonopodium. The comb-like spines on the third gonopodial ray are comparatively few and seated on a heavy, massive base, a structural signature that distinguishes P. obscura from the otherwise very similar P. reticulata and P. wingei. This is the practical reason the species went unrecognised for so long: external livery overlaps broadly with the common guppy, and reliable identification rests on gonopodial detail plus molecular data rather than on any single obvious field mark.

Detailed, species-specific accounts of male colour pattern are sparse, and FishBase carries no photograph for the species. As a member of the guppy group, wild males can be expected to carry the scattered, individually variable spots and bars characteristic of Acanthophacelus, but the published data are thin enough that confident claims about a distinctive P. obscura colour pattern would be guesswork — here the honest position is that the visual morphology is data-sparse.

Habitat

The species is a tropical freshwater fish of western Trinidad, with the original material drawn from the Oropuche River system. FishBase records it as freshwater and demersal, across a narrow tropical latitude band of roughly 11N to 10N, consistent with a restricted Trinidadian distribution rather than the near-global wild range claimed by the common guppy. The Oropuche drainage of the island's lowlands is the heart of what is documented for P. obscura.

No dedicated limnological profile of P. obscura's preferred temperature, pH and hardness has been published in the cached sources, so the specifics of its water chemistry are best treated as data-sparse. What can reasonably be said is that, as a lowland tropical Trinidadian guppy-group fish, it inhabits warm, small-bodied fresh waters — streams, ditches, ponds and river margins of the kind that the broader guppy complex occupies across the island — and that, like its relatives, it is likely tolerant of a range of ordinary tropical conditions. Any tighter numbers than that would be inference rather than measurement.

Because the three Acanthophacelus species can co-occur or replace one another across Trinidad's drainages, the precise distributional limits of P. obscura — and the degree to which it overlaps with the common guppy — remain an active question that depends on careful, often molecular, re-identification of populations.

Feeding

There is no diet study specific to Poecilia obscura in the cached record; FishBase assigns it a trophic level of about 3.0, which is typical of a small omnivore that takes both animal and plant matter. On that basis, and by analogy with the closely related common guppy, P. obscura can be expected to behave as an opportunistic micro-omnivore, grazing on algae, detritus and small aquatic invertebrates and taking insect larvae and other small drifting prey from the water column and surface.

In captivity the species — to the extent it is kept at all, almost always indistinguishably from common guppy stock — would be expected to accept the same undemanding fare as other guppies: fine flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm, plus some vegetable or algal content. As with all the small livebearers, frequent small feedings suit a near-constant grazer better than infrequent large meals.

Beyond these reasonable analogies, species-specific feeding data are absent, and this article does not assert particulars of wild diet composition that the sources do not support.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Poecilia obscura reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ used to transfer sperm directly to the female — and in this species the gonopodium is more than a reproductive tool, it is the principal diagnostic character separating P. obscura from its relatives. The structure of its third-ray spines, few and massively based, is what allows the species to be told apart at all.

Detailed behavioural observations specific to P. obscura are not present in the cached sources, but the species belongs to a group whose mating system is one of the best studied among fishes. In the guppy complex, males pursue females more or less continuously, alternating between conspicuous courtship displays and surreptitious sneak-mating attempts, while females exercise mate choice — typically favouring brighter, more vigorous males. It is reasonable to expect P. obscura to share this general Acanthophacelus mating biology, though the species-specific strength of female preference and the role of male colour have not, in the cached record, been quantified for P. obscura itself.

Breeding

Poecilia obscura is a viviparous livebearer, like the rest of the genus Poecilia. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs; the mode in subgenus Acanthophacelus is the lecithotrophic, essentially ovoviviparous pattern typical of guppies, in which the embryos are nourished mainly by yolk laid down in the egg rather than by a placenta. Females of poeciliids can commonly store sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating, a trait that would be expected here as well.

The cached sources contain no species-specific figures for P. obscura's gestation length, brood size or growth — FishBase notes the absence of brood-size and gestation data for this species. By analogy with the common guppy, gestation on the order of several weeks and broods ranging from a handful to a few dozen fry would be unsurprising, but these are expectations drawn from relatives, not measurements of P. obscura, and are flagged as such. Pronounced superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — is documented in some Poecilia but is not established for P. obscura in the cached record, so it is not asserted here.

In short, the reproductive framework is secure (internal fertilisation, livebearing, free-swimming fry) while the quantitative breeding biology of this particular species remains genuinely data-sparse.

In the aquarium

Poecilia obscura is essentially never offered in the hobby under its own name. Because it was hidden within the common guppy until 2009 and is separable mainly by gonopodial structure and DNA, any P. obscura in captivity is almost certainly present unrecognised within ordinary Trinidad-origin guppy stock. There is no established trade, no named strains, and no body of dedicated husbandry experience for the species as such.

What husbandry can be inferred comes entirely from its membership in the guppy group: a tiny, presumably hardy, peaceful tropical livebearer that would suit a small, well-planted community of similar fishes, with the usual livebearer caveat that adults may predate their own fry and that males harass females. None of these expectations, however, are documented specifically for P. obscura, and an aquarist should not assume that fish sold as "guppies" are this species. Given the editorial standard against asserting uncertain identifications, the honest framing is that keeping P. obscura deliberately would first require reliable identification, which is not something a hobbyist can do by eye.

For practical purposes, then, this is a species of scientific rather than aquarium interest — a reminder that the familiar guppy of the shop tank is actually a small complex of look-alike species.

Conservation

Poecilia obscura has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as of the version recorded in the cached FishBase reference (Version 2025-2, Global) its status is Not Evaluated, and the species does not appear as an assessed taxon in the Red List database. It is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and CMS. There is therefore no formal conservation assessment, no population trend and no threat classification to report.

The absence of an assessment is unsurprising for a species described only in 2009 and recognised largely on cryptic characters: a fish that is hard to identify is hard to assess, and much of its range and abundance is entangled with that of the common guppy. As a narrow-range endemic of western Trinidad's drainages, P. obscura could in principle be more vulnerable to local habitat change than its globally distributed sister species, but the cached sources do not support any specific statement of threat, and none is made here.

The responsible summary is simply that the species is currently unassessed and that any conservation judgement awaits both a dedicated evaluation and clearer resolution of its distribution relative to the rest of the guppy complex.
