Taxonomy & naming
Brachyrhaphis roseni was described by the American ichthyologist William A. Bussing in 1988, from material in the freshwaters of lower Central America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Brachyrhaphis roseni Bussing, 1988 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Brachyrhaphis within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearing toothcarps that share internal fertilisation and, in the males, a gonopodium.
The genus Brachyrhaphis is a small, regionally circumscribed group of roughly a dozen described species, centred on Costa Rica and Panama with a few reaching into adjacent countries. They are compact, stream-dwelling livebearers, and several are difficult to tell apart on body shape alone, separated instead by colour pattern, fin markings and details of the male gonopodium. Within this group B. roseni is among the better-marked and more frequently kept members.
The specific epithet honours Dr Donn Eric Rosen (1929–1986), the American ichthyologist whose work on the poeciliids and other atherinomorph fishes shaped the modern understanding of the family. The species is therefore a patronym — Rosen's fish — and the English name "Cardinal toothcarp" follows the male's reddish-orange fin colour, echoed in the hobby names Cardinal Brachyrhaphis and Cardinal Brachy.
Morphology
Brachyrhaphis roseni is a small, elongate livebearer with an oval body cross-section. FishBase records a maximum of about 2.5 in standard length for males and unsexed fish, with females recorded to around 1.5 in SL; hobbyist keepers, measuring total length rather than standard length, report distinctly larger figures — males to roughly 2.5 in and females to around 3.5 in TL — so the apparent contradiction is partly a matter of which length is being measured. Either way the fish is a small, slim toothcarp built for active swimming.
The most consistent marking is a series of about twelve dark vertical bars along the sides, more prominent in males than in females. Males are the colourful sex: the caudal-fin margin is orange with a darkened submarginal band, the distal half of the dorsal fin is orange edged in black, and the anal fin is yellowish with a black blotch. Hobby observers add that males in good condition can show a bright orange-red dorsal, a reddish caudal with an iridescent blue tail edge, and scales finely edged in black. Females are plainer, retaining the barring but with only a thin blue-white iridescent band on the caudal and anal fins.
As in all poeciliids, the defining male structure is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays and used to transfer sperm internally. In B. roseni the gonopodium is described as two-toned, dark above and pale yellow below. Together with the male's slimmer body and orange-marked fins, it makes the sexes straightforward to tell apart once the fish are mature.
Habitat
Brachyrhaphis roseni is a Central American freshwater fish, native to Costa Rica and Panama. It is a non-migratory, tropical species of streams and creeks, recorded from low elevations of roughly 20 to 100 metres, where it occupies both stagnant pools and waters of low to moderate current. Within those streams it keeps to the surface and mid-water of creeks and smaller channels, and hobbyist accounts add that it favours shallow stream margins among rocks and plants.
The water it lives in is warm and on the harder, more alkaline side. FishBase gives a temperature range of about 72–86 °F, a pH of roughly 7.2 to 8.0, and hardness up to around 10 dH. This is a fish of clear, well-oxygenated lowland streams rather than soft blackwater, and its tolerance of both still pools and flowing reaches reflects a generalist that can exploit a range of small-water conditions across its range.
The species is classed as having high resilience, with a population doubling time estimated at under fifteen months — a reproductive capacity typical of small livebearers and consistent with its life in dynamic, sometimes seasonal, stream habitats.
Feeding
In the wild Brachyrhaphis roseni is an insectivore and active micro-predator, taking small aquatic invertebrates and insects from the surface and water column of its streams. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a diet weighted toward animal prey rather than algae or detritus, and hobbyist accounts describe it as a fast, hunting fish that works the upper water for small live food.
In the aquarium it is undemanding and readily takes prepared foods, accepting good-quality flake and small pellets alongside live and frozen items such as small invertebrates and insect larvae. A varied diet with a strong animal-protein component suits its natural feeding habits and keeps males in their best colour and the fish in breeding condition. As with most small, active livebearers, several modest feedings suit it better than one heavy meal.
Mating
Reproduction in Brachyrhaphis roseni is internal, as in all poeciliids. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ; fertilisation takes place inside the female, who then carries the developing young. There is no nest and no external spawning — the fish is a true livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming fry.
Courtship in this species is vigorous and physical rather than subtle. Hobbyist keepers describe males aggressively pursuing and courting females, and females themselves sparring with one another, so that the social life of a group is busy and sometimes combative. This pushiness is part of why the species is not regarded as a gentle community fish; the same drive that fuels constant courtship also makes the males assertive toward tankmates.
As with other poeciliids, the female's capacity to store sperm allows successive broods to follow a mating, though detailed data on sperm storage and superfetation specific to B. roseni are sparse. Within the genus, reproduction is generally lecithotrophic — the developing young are nourished by yolk provisioned in the egg rather than by a placenta-like connection to the mother, as is seen in some other poeciliid lineages — though this has not been documented in detail for this species, so it is best treated as the genus-level expectation rather than a confirmed measurement for B. roseni.
Breeding
Brachyrhaphis roseni is a viviparous livebearer that gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry. Gestation runs on the order of a couple of weeks, and broods are moderate: one hobbyist account records a gravid female dropping roughly forty fry after about two weeks in a breeding trap. The fry are robust, strong swimmers from the start, and grow quickly, taking finely crushed flake and other small foods almost immediately.
The central challenge in breeding this species is the parents themselves. The adults are voracious fry predators — they will readily eat their own young — so keepers who want to raise good numbers rely on a net or trap method, separating the gravid female or the newborn fry from the adults. Dense planting and hiding spots help, but the fish's predatory disposition means cover alone is often not enough to protect a brood in a community setting.
Given the species' high resilience and short population-doubling time, a settled group in good condition breeds freely, and the practical task becomes protecting and growing out the fry rather than coaxing the adults to spawn. Strong, fast-growing fry on finely crushed flake reach a recognisable juvenile form quickly, with males beginning to show colour and develop the gonopodium as they mature.
In the aquarium
Brachyrhaphis roseni is a livebearer for the keeper who wants activity and character rather than a placid community fish. It is fast-swimming and assertive, and hobbyist accounts are blunt about its temperament: it is nippy and semi-aggressive, will harass tankmates — corydoras among them — and the males court females insistently while females spar with one another. It is best thought of as a spirited specialist livebearer, not a beginner's peaceful schooler.
A well-planted tank of at least about 15 gallons (roughly 15 US gal), with plants, rocks and hiding spots, suits a group and gives less assertive individuals room to escape. The species has been kept successfully in ordinary tap water around 73 °F (about 74 °F) at a pH near 7.4, with generous weekly water changes, which sits comfortably within the wild range of warm, neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water. Tankmates should be chosen with the fish's nippy disposition in mind — avoid timid or long-finned companions, and watch corydoras and similar bottom dwellers, which can be harassed.
Conservation
Brachyrhaphis roseni is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii), in an assessment dated 31 December 2019. The listing reflects a restricted distribution in the lowland streams of Costa Rica and Panama and a continuing decline in habitat quality, rather than a collapse in numbers — the species itself remains a resilient, fast-reproducing stream fish across its range.
The principal pressures on Central American lowland stream fishes are habitat-driven: pollution, alteration of stream channels, agricultural runoff and the broader degradation of the small waters these fish depend on. For a species already confined to a relatively narrow geographic band, those local pressures carry weight, which is what places it a step above Least Concern.
The species has not been evaluated under CITES or CMS. For aquarists, the practical conservation point is the familiar one for hardy livebearers: the fish is best maintained as healthy captive lines — many hobby strains trace to collections made well over a decade ago — and, as with any non-native livebearer, must never be released into local waters, where an adaptable, fast-breeding stream fish could establish itself outside its range.
