Brachyrhaphis roswithae is a small, net-marked livebearing toothcarp known only from the small rivers of Panama, where it swims in loose schools among its better-known relatives. Described as recently as 1998 by Manfred Meyer and Vollrad Etzel, it is one of the lesser-known members of a Central American genus prized by livebearer specialists for being both handsome and combative. Wild fish carry a pronounced brown reticulum along the flanks and an elongate body, and the species remains poorly studied in the field — listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN — making it a quiet curiosity rather than a hobby staple.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyrhaphis roswithae was described in 1998 by Manfred K. Meyer and Vollrad Etzel in the paper "Notes on the genus Brachyrhaphis Regan 1913, with the description of a new species from Panama," published in Senckenbergiana Biologica (77(2):155–160). It belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, swordtails and mosquitofishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Brachyrhaphis roswithae Meyer & Etzel, 1998 as the valid name.

The genus Brachyrhaphis was erected by Regan in 1913 and groups a set of small, internally fertilising livebearers distributed through Central America, from southern Mexico to Panama and Colombia. Several of its members — notably Brachyrhaphis roseni and Brachyrhaphis episcopi — are familiar to specialist livebearer keepers, and the genus as a whole is known for being more pugnacious than the average poeciliid. Within this assemblage B. roswithae is a Panamanian endemic, distinguished from its congeners by aspects of its coloration and meristics at the time of its description.

The genus name combines the Greek brachys ("short") with raphis ("needle"), a reference to the gonopodium, the modified anal-fin intromittent organ characteristic of these fishes. The specific epithet roswithae honours Roswitha Etzel (later Erasmy, née Etzel) of Cuxhaven, understood to be the daughter of the junior author, Dr Vollrad Max Friedrich Etzel (1944–2012). The fish accordingly carries the English name Roswitha's toothcarp.

Morphology

Brachyrhaphis roswithae is a small fish, recorded at a maximum of about 2 in in total length. The body is elongate, and the most conspicuous feature is a pronounced dark-brown reticulum — a net-like pattern — running along the sides of the body, frequently accompanied by a crescent-shaped marking on the tail. This reticulated flank pattern is the source of much of the species' visual appeal and helps separate it from plainer congeners.

Meristically, the species lacks dorsal spines, carries roughly nine dorsal soft rays, and has a vertebral count in the region of 27 to 29. As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ: males bear a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — used to transfer sperm to the female, while females are typically larger and deeper-bodied. Detailed published descriptions of the species' coloration beyond the diagnostic reticulum are limited, and much of the fine morphology rests on the original 1998 account.

Data on this species are sparse compared with hobby-staple livebearers, and figures here trace to FishBase's summary of the original description rather than to a broad body of subsequent study. Where the literature is silent — for example on the full extent of sexual colour dimorphism — it is more honest to note the gap than to extrapolate from better-known relatives.

Habitat

Brachyrhaphis roswithae is endemic to Panama in Central America, where it inhabits small rivers. It is a freshwater, pelagic, non-migratory species of tropical lowland streams, and adults have been observed living in schools — a sociable habit shared with several of its congeners.

FishBase records the species from waters with a temperature range of roughly 68–75 °F and a notably wide pH tolerance, spanning approximately 6.8 to 9.2. This breadth of chemistry suggests a fish at home across a range of small-stream conditions, from neutral to distinctly alkaline water, though the figures derive from a limited dataset rather than extensive field surveys.

Because the species is known from a restricted Panamanian distribution and has been little studied in the wild, its precise range, the specific drainages it occupies, and its ecological associations with other Brachyrhaphis species in Panama remain incompletely documented. The IUCN's Data Deficient listing reflects exactly this shortfall of distributional and population information.

Feeding

Brachyrhaphis roswithae sits at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3 (modelled), placing it among the small omnivore-to-micropredator livebearers rather than the strict herbivores. Like other members of the genus and the broader Poeciliidae, it can be expected to take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and whatever algal and detrital matter the stream provides, though species-specific dietary studies are lacking.

In small Central American streams, fishes of this size and build typically forage in the water column and at the surface, picking off drifting and small benthic prey. The schooling habit noted for adults is consistent with an active, opportunistic feeder that ranges through open water rather than holding a fixed territory.

For aquarium purposes, congeners in the genus are unfussy feeders that accept prepared flake and micro-pellets alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, with a share of vegetable matter rounding out the diet. Specific feeding data for B. roswithae itself are sparse, so this guidance is drawn by analogy from the genus rather than from dedicated study of this species.

Mating

Brachyrhaphis roswithae is a viviparous poeciliid, which means fertilisation is internal. The male carries a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which he uses to transfer sperm directly to the female. This mode of reproduction is the defining feature of the livebearing toothcarps and dispenses entirely with the external spawning of egg-laying fishes.

As in related livebearers, males pursue females and attempt insemination rather than tending a nest or defending a spawning site, and females are generally able to store sperm internally to fuel successive broods. The genus is noted for assertive, even nippy behaviour, and that disposition extends to reproductive interactions, with males persistently pursuing females.

Detailed courtship behaviour specific to B. roswithae has not been widely documented. What is known of its reproduction comes principally from comparative work on Panamanian Brachyrhaphis — Stallsmith's 2018 study in Neotropical Biodiversity, which examined reproductive differences among three species of the genus in Panama and found seasonal shifts in life-history investment, discussed in the next section.

Breeding

Following internal fertilisation, female Brachyrhaphis roswithae gestate their young and give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs — the livebearing strategy common to the family. The species has high resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, indicating a productive reproductive output typical of small poeciliids.

The most useful published insight into the species' breeding comes from Bruce Stallsmith's 2018 study of reproductive differences among three Panamanian Brachyrhaphis, including B. roswithae alongside B. episcopi. That work documented seasonal variation in life-history investment: the fish showed shifts in reproductive allotment, brood size and embryo size between seasons, with one season favouring larger reproductive allotment and bigger broods at the cost of smaller individual embryos, and the other reversing that trade-off. This kind of seasonal plasticity — adjusting how much to invest in reproduction and whether to produce many small young or fewer larger ones — is a recurring theme in livebearer life history.

Exact brood-size figures for the species were not captured in the accessible portion of that study, and superfetation — the ability of some poeciliids to carry overlapping broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — has not been clearly documented for B. roswithae here, so it is left unstated rather than assumed. As with much else about this fish, the breeding biology is known in outline rather than in detail.

In the aquarium

Brachyrhaphis roswithae is not a common aquarium fish, and no dedicated specialist husbandry account for the species was located; the guidance below is drawn from the genus rather than from this species specifically. Brachyrhaphis as a group are kept by livebearer enthusiasts and are known for being spirited, sometimes aggressive tankmates — the well-documented congener B. roseni, for instance, is described as anything but timid, readily chasing tankmates including peaceful catfishes.

Water conditions reported for the species in the wild — roughly 68–75 °F and a broad pH span from about 6.8 to 9.2 — suggest an adaptable fish that should tolerate a range of stable, well-maintained aquarium chemistry, with a leaning toward neutral-to-alkaline water. Given the genus's temperament, tankmates should be chosen with care: robust fish that can hold their own, rather than long-finned or particularly placid species that might be harassed.

Prospective keepers should treat this as a fish for the dedicated livebearer hobbyist rather than a community-tank beginner's species. Its rarity in the trade, the assertive character of the genus, and the limited body of species-specific care information all argue for keeping it in a considered, species-appropriate setup.

Conservation

Brachyrhaphis roswithae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 1 October 2019 (Red List Version 2025-2). The Data Deficient category indicates that there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population size or trends to make a reliable judgement of its extinction risk — it is a statement about the gaps in our knowledge rather than a finding of either safety or peril.

As a Panamanian endemic known from small rivers, the species' fortunes are tied to the health of those particular drainages, and the absence of detailed distributional and population data is precisely what underpins the Data Deficient listing. The species is harmless to humans and of low fishing vulnerability, and it is not currently evaluated under CITES or CMS.

The responsible position is to recognise how little is firmly known. Resolving the Data Deficient status would require targeted field survey of its Panamanian range — the kind of work that has not yet been published for this fish — so any conservation statement beyond the formal DD listing would be speculation rather than fact.
