Austrolebias luzardoi is a small South American annual killifish described from the Cuareim (Cuaraí) river basin on the Brazil–Uruguay border in 2005, and subsequently synonymised with the earlier Matilebias periodicus (Costa, 1999). Like all members of its seasonal-pool lineage, the fish spends the dry season as drought-resistant, diapausing eggs buried in the mud — the entire adult population dies when the pools evaporate — and hatches en masse when rains refill the temporary waters of the Ibicuí and Quaraí drainages in the southern Rio Uruguay basin. It is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (2020), its restricted range and dependence on ephemeral wetlands making it sensitive to agricultural expansion and drainage across the Pampas and Chaco grasslands of southern Brazil and northwestern Uruguay.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was formally described by Perujo, Calviño, Salvia & Prieto in 2005 as Austrolebias luzardoi, with type localities at Santana do Livramento (Brazil) and Lajeadinho (Brazil) in the Ibicuí and Quaraí (Cuareim) river drainages of the Río Uruguay basin. The description appeared in Revista del Museo de La Plata (volume 17, pp. 1–12), and the full citation in the primary literature is: Perujo, E., Calviño, P.A., Salvia, H. & Prieto, F. (2005) 'Austrolebias luzardoi (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), una especie nueva de pez anual de la cuenca del río Cuareim, República Oriental del Uruguay.'

A subsequent taxonomic revision by Wilson J.E.M. Costa (Zootaxa 1213, 2006) synonymised Austrolebias luzardoi with Matilebias periodicus (Costa, 1999) — the latter name having priority as the earlier description. Under current Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treatment, the valid combination is Matilebias periodicus (Costa, 1999); the name luzardoi is retained in the literature as a junior synonym and remains in use among hobbyists. The genus Matilebias was erected to accommodate a group of annual killifishes from the Río de la Plata drainage region previously held within the broader Austrolebias, reflecting molecular and morphological evidence for a distinct lineage.

The American Killifish Association lists this fish under Matilebias periodicus and classifies it in Class 3: South American Annuals. FishBase carries it under both the synonym and the accepted name (entry 57470).

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2 in SL, placing this species among the smaller annual killifishes of the Río de la Plata drainage. The body form is typical of the South American annual killifish guild: deep and laterally compressed, with a large, upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding. Males are considerably more colourful than females, displaying the vivid barring and iridescent flanks characteristic of annual Austrolebias relatives, while females are plain brownish with cryptic mottling that blends with the leaf-litter and sediment of their seasonal pool habitat.

The species exhibits the pronounced sexual dimorphism universal in South American annual killifishes. Males develop elongated, colourful fins used in courtship display; females are smaller and drabber. The precise coloration pattern of luzardoi / M. periodicus in live specimens is documented in hobbyist literature and the original description but the cache data on coloration detail is sparse beyond the characteristic male display pattern.

Habitat

Austrolebias luzardoi inhabits small, temporary, standing waters — roadside ditches, seasonal ponds, flooded grassland depressions, and shallow pools — in the Ibicuí and Quaraí (Cuareim) river drainages of the southern Rio Uruguay basin, straddling the border between the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and the Uruguayan department of Artigas. The landscape is Pampas and Chaco-transition grassland, where summer rains fill basins that dry out entirely during the dry season.

FishBase data for this species gives indicative water parameters of approximately pH 7, 73 °F, and hardness around 5 dH (soft, slightly alkaline freshwater), consistent with seasonal pools fed by rainfall rather than by hard groundwater. These values are characteristic of the open, well-lit temporary pools of the southern grassland biome, which warm rapidly in spring and summer and can fluctuate considerably in chemistry as they concentrate and dilute with rainfall and evaporation.

Feeding

South American annual killifishes are generalist predators of invertebrates. In their temporary pool habitat, Austrolebias species feed on whatever invertebrate prey the seasonal water body produces: aquatic insect larvae (chironomids, mosquito larvae), small crustaceans, worms, and microinvertebrates. The upturned mouth and forward-set eyes are adaptations for ambush feeding near the surface and in the water column.

In the aquarium, Austrolebias and Matilebias species accept live and frozen foods readily — Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and tubifex are standard fare. Dried and pelleted foods may be taken by settled individuals but live and frozen foods produce better condition and coloration in males and improve breeding success.

Mating

Courtship in annual South American killifishes is an intense, visually driven affair. Males display their full lateral coloration and fin extent to females, pressing courtship in the shallow water of the pool. Rival males are confronted with lateral displays and, if spacing allows, physical chases. When a female is receptive she signals submission and the pair moves toward the substrate for spawning.

The pair dive together into the soft mud or peat substrate at the bottom of the pool — the characteristic spawning act of annual killifishes. Eggs are deposited individually or in small batches directly into the sediment, where they are buried and immediately begin their developmental diapause programme. Males of annual Austrolebias relatives are known to court repeatedly over a breeding season, and courtship continues as long as suitable females are present and water conditions hold.

Breeding

The life cycle of Austrolebias luzardoi is defined by annualism. The entire fish population inhabits pools that evaporate completely during the dry season; the adult fish die as the water disappears, but the species persists as buried, drought-resistant eggs in the substrate. These eggs enter diapause — a state of arrested development — and can survive months of complete desiccation, protected by their chorion and the insulating mud layer. When seasonal rains refill the pool, the eggs receive the hydration and temperature cues that terminate diapause, and hatching occurs rapidly, sometimes within days.

The hobbyist replicates this cycle using peat or coconut coir as a spawning medium. After a period of spawning (typically 4–8 weeks in a breeding tank), the substrate is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, bagged in sealed plastic with just enough humidity to prevent desiccation, and stored in darkness at a stable temperature (around 68–72 °F) for 3–6 months — simulating the dry season. The bag is then re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water and the fry hatch over a period of days to weeks. Multiple re-wettings may be needed to hatch all eggs, as diapause termination is staggered across the clutch. Fry are large relative to many killifish species and accept Artemia nauplii as a first food immediately after hatching. Growth is fast and sexual maturity can be reached in 6–10 weeks under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Austrolebias luzardoi is a fish for the specialist killifish hobbyist. Its annual life cycle, specific spawning requirements, and the diapausing-egg storage period make it unsuitable for general community aquaria, but it is a manageable and rewarding species for those who follow the established annual killifish methodology. A small, dedicated breeding tank of 10–15 US gal, well-planted or furnished with floating cover, with a layer of peat or coconut coir on the bottom as a spawning medium, is the standard setup.

Water parameters should reflect the soft, slightly alkaline conditions recorded from the type locality: temperature around 68–75 °F, pH near neutral to slightly above (around 7), and low hardness. The seasonal nature of the fish means the keeper operates on a cycle: spawn the adults over several weeks, harvest and store the substrate, allow a dry rest period, re-wet to hatch fry, and raise the next generation. This cycle, while demanding, is precisely what makes annual killifishes compelling for dedicated enthusiasts — it recapitulates the biology of a wild seasonal pool in microcosm.

Because of its Vulnerable IUCN status and restricted wild range, maintaining captive populations of this species has conservation value beyond the hobbyist interest. The American Killifish Association tracks and supports captive breeding of threatened annual killifishes, and hobbyist networks are an important custodian of genetic diversity for species that may face continued habitat loss in the wild.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Matilebias periodicus (including luzardoi) as Vulnerable (VU), with the most recent assessment dated 2020 (assessor: Brejão, G.L.). The species qualifies for this status by virtue of its restricted range in the Ibicuí and Quaraí drainages of the southern Rio Uruguay basin and its dependence on ephemeral seasonal pools — a habitat type under sustained pressure from agricultural intensification, wetland drainage, and land conversion across the Pampas and Chaco grassland biome in southern Brazil and northwestern Uruguay.

The threats facing this species are representative of those confronting most South American annual killifishes: drainage of temporary wetlands for agriculture and pasture improvement, sedimentation from grazed catchments, alteration of seasonal flood regimes, and the introduction of non-native species (including mosquitofish, Gambusia spp.) that compete with and prey upon native killifishes in residual pool habitat. Because the entire population passes the dry season in an egg bank buried in substrate, any physical disturbance of pool sediments — tillage, earthworks, cattle trampling — during the dry season can destroy an entire local population with no survivors to recolonise.

Captive populations maintained by killifish enthusiast societies are an important safety net for this and related species. The American Killifish Association maintains records of captive stocks and facilitates the exchange of eggs and fry among breeders, providing a living genetic archive that could support future reintroduction efforts if wild populations decline further.
