Jenynsia luxata is a tiny, recently described one-sided livebearer known only from a handful of interior streams and flooded pools in north-western Argentina. Named for the curiously "dislocated" pelvic bones that diagnose it, the species was described in 2013 from a small type series and — despite repeated collecting expeditions — has scarcely been found since, making it one of the more enigmatic and apparently narrowly endemic members of the South American family Anablepidae.

Taxonomy & naming

Jenynsia luxata was described in 2013 by Gastón Aguilera, Juan Marcos Mirande, Pablo Calviño and Luis Lobo in Neotropical Ichthyology, on the basis of material from the endorheic interior basins of north-western Argentina. The genus Jenynsia belongs to the family Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes and one-sided livebearers — within the order Cyprinodontiformes, and the new species was placed in the nominal subgenus Jenynsia (the genus is divided into the subgenera Plesiojenynsia and Jenynsia). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, treating Jenynsia luxata Aguilera, Mirande, Calviño & Lobo, 2013 as valid.

The genus name honours the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), the English naturalist who described the fishes of the Beagle voyage. The specific epithet luxata derives from the Latin for "dislocated," referring to the diagnostic condition of the pelvic bones: the medial processes of the left and right pelvic bones are reduced and do not overlap at the ventral midline, an unusual separation that sets the species apart from its congeners.

The closest external relative of J. luxata is J. multidentata, a widespread and ecologically tolerant species that is itself suspected of being a species complex. By contrast, J. luxata is known only from two restricted localities, and the contrast between the two — one near-ubiquitous, the other apparently a narrow endemic — is part of what makes the new species notable within the genus.

Morphology

Jenynsia luxata is a small, fusiform fish; the largest recorded specimen reaches about 1.5 in standard length. As in other Jenynsia, the sexes differ markedly in size, with females considerably larger than males — the holotype male measures 1 in SL while female paratypes reach up to 1.5 in SL. Meristic counts reported in the original description include 8–9 dorsal soft rays, 10 anal soft rays, 28–30 vertebrae, and 12–16 predorsal scales; the outer mandibular tooth series is tricuspid.

The species is diagnosed by the reduced, non-overlapping medial processes of the pelvic bones (the feature behind its name), by 4–6 regular rows of small, circular dark-brown spots along the side of the body — most apparent as a midlateral row along the caudal peduncle — and, in females, by the absence of the swelling between the urogenital opening and the anal-fin base seen in some relatives. Female eye diameter is 26.1–33.1% of head length.

In life the body is yellowish, grading to brown dorsally and cream ventrally, with the belly unpigmented and the fins hyaline. The midlateral row of dark spots or dashes is the most conspicuous element of the colour pattern. The overall impression is of a plain, cryptically marked little fish typical of small, turbid interior waters rather than a brightly coloured aquarium subject.

Habitat

Jenynsia luxata is known only from north-western Argentina, in the provinces of Tucumán and Santiago del Estero. The type locality is a small unnamed stream in the endorheic río Tajamar (= río Cajón) basin near the city of Burruyacú, Tucumán, at roughly 26°30′S 64°44′W, where the type series was collected in April 2002. A second locality lies in Santiago del Estero, at small flooded pools beside a provincial road near Pellegrini — pools not connected to, but lying near, the río Urueña basin.

Both sites are lowland interior waters: small unnamed streams and ephemeral flooded pools in endorheic (closed-drainage) and floodplain settings rather than parts of large through-flowing river systems. This is a markedly restricted distribution. Despite the wide ecological range of the genus as a whole — Jenynsia species occur from coastal Atlantic drainages at sea level to Andean-border rivers up to roughly 2,984 ft — J. luxata appears confined to these two interior basins.

No specific water-chemistry figures (temperature, pH or hardness) were reported for the species, so the precise conditions it occupies are not documented here; the data are sparse. What can be said is that the habitats are small, shallow, lowland tropical freshwaters subject to the seasonal flooding typical of interior NW Argentina.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Jenynsia luxata has been published, and feeding details for the species are sparse. FishBase assigns it a modelled trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with a small omnivore or micro-carnivore that takes a mix of animal and plant matter rather than a strict predator or strict herbivore.

By analogy with better-studied members of the genus, small Jenynsia are generalist feeders on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, algae and detritus gleaned from shallow water and the substrate. The tricuspid outer teeth of J. luxata are consistent with a generalised diet rather than a specialised one.

In the absence of published observations, any more precise statement about what this species eats in the wild would be speculation. The honest summary is that it is most likely a small benthopelagic omnivore of shallow interior waters, but the specifics remain undocumented.

Mating

Jenynsia are viviparous (live-bearing) fishes with internal fertilisation. In J. luxata, as in the rest of the genus, the male carries an intromittent organ — an unscaled, tubular gonopodium formed mainly from modified anal-fin rays (with rays 3, 6 and 7 most involved, and the first eight anal-fin rays modified overall). Sperm is transferred directly to the female, so reproduction does not depend on egg-laying or external fertilisation.

A notable feature of Jenynsia mating biology is functional "sidedness": in one-sided livebearers the male's gonopodium and the female's genital region are laterally asymmetric, so that a given male can typically only inseminate females oriented to one particular side. This lateral specialisation is the origin of the family's common name, the one-sided livebearers, and is presumed to apply to J. luxata along with its congeners, although it has not been studied directly in this species.

The pronounced size dimorphism — small males, much larger females — is consistent with the courtship-and-insemination system seen across the genus. Detailed behavioural observations of courtship in J. luxata have not been published, so the finer points of display and mate choice are not documented here.

Breeding

Like other members of the genus, Jenynsia luxata is a live-bearing fish: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The original description does not report brood size, gestation length, or any details of fry development for this species, so these specifics are genuinely unknown for J. luxata and should not be inferred precisely.

In Jenynsia generally, broods are modest in number and the young are born fully formed and immediately independent, as is typical of poeciliiform livebearers. Whether J. luxata shows the matrotrophy (maternal provisioning of embryos during gestation) documented in some anablepids, or any form of superfetation (carrying multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously), has not been established and is not asserted here.

The reproductive picture for this species is therefore one of confirmed viviparity with internal fertilisation, but with the quantitative reproductive parameters — brood size, gestation, frequency — still undescribed. This is consistent with how little material has been collected: most of what is known rests on the small original type series.

In the aquarium

Jenynsia luxata is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. It is a recently described, narrowly endemic species represented in collections by only a small type series, and there is no established body of husbandry experience to draw on. Aquarists are far more likely to encounter the widespread J. multidentata, which occasionally appears among livebearer specialists, than this rare interior endemic.

No captive-care parameters — temperature, pH, hardness, diet or breeding protocol — have been documented for J. luxata specifically, so any care recommendation would be guesswork. By the general standards of small interior-basin Jenynsia, a fish of this kind would presumably want a modest, well-filtered aquarium with cover and a varied diet of small live, frozen and prepared foods, but this is extrapolation rather than tested practice.

Given its rarity and apparently very restricted range, the responsible framing is conservation rather than collection: this is a species of scientific interest known from almost no specimens, not an established aquarium fish.

Conservation

Jenynsia luxata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN; FishBase lists it as Not Evaluated (NE), and there is no dedicated Red List assessment or numeric species page for it. It is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and CMS.

Despite the absence of a formal assessment, the available information points to genuine rarity. The original describers noted an extremely restricted range and reported that, despite several collecting expeditions and extensive sampling, no additional specimens beyond the type series were found. A fish known from only two interior localities and almost no material is, on its face, vulnerable to habitat disturbance simply because so little of it exists in collections and so little is known of its ecology.

The appropriate conclusion is cautious: J. luxata is formally Not Evaluated, but its narrow, endorheic-basin distribution and apparent scarcity make it a candidate for conservation attention rather than a species that can be assumed secure. Confirming its status would require targeted survey work in the Tucumán and Santiago del Estero localities and a proper Red List assessment.
