Taxonomy & naming
Jenynsia maculata was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1906. It sits in the genus Jenynsia within the family Anablepidae — the New World order Cyprinodontiformes group that also contains the famous four-eyed fishes (Anableps) and is set apart from the more familiar Poeciliidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid names, retains Jenynsia maculata Regan, 1906 as valid, and FishBase places it in the subfamily Anablepinae. The genus name honours the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), an English clergyman and amateur naturalist of Darwin's circle, while the epithet maculata is Latin for "spotted," describing the dark markings of the body.
The Anablepidae are sometimes called the "onesided livebearers," a name that captures the genus Jenynsia's most distinctive feature: a laterally asymmetric reproductive anatomy in both sexes. Unlike the bilaterally symmetric gonopodium of poeciliids, the male intromittent organ in Jenynsia is bent to one side — dextral or sinistral — and matched by a complementary asymmetry in the female opening, so that fish of one orientation can mate only with fish of the opposite orientation. This unusual system has made the genus a recurring subject in studies of reproductive morphology, though J. maculata itself has received little dedicated attention.
Much of the modern framework for the family follows the phylogenetic revision of the Anablepidae by Michael J. Ghedotti (1998), who serves as FishBase's coordinator for the group. Common names in circulation include "Spotted Salta livebearer" and "onesided livebearer" in English and "madrecita" — a generic Spanish diminutive applied to many small Argentine livebearers — but the species has no established presence in the aquarium trade and no widely used vernacular name of its own.
Morphology
Jenynsia maculata is a small, elongate, benthopelagic livebearer reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3 in SL. Like other members of the genus it has a slender, slightly compressed body, a flattened head with a terminal mouth set with small teeth, and a posteriorly placed dorsal fin — the general build of a stream-dwelling toothcarp adapted to slow, vegetated water. The published Bayesian length–weight relationship for the species gives parameters of a ≈ 0.00537 and b ≈ 3.15, indicating roughly isometric growth.
The specific epithet refers to the species' spotted patterning. As in most Jenynsia, the ground colour is a muted silvery to olive, overlaid with darker markings along the flanks that provide camouflage among aquatic plants and leaf litter. Detailed accounts of live colouration and meristics for J. maculata are sparse, reflecting how little the species has been studied beyond its original description and its inclusion in regional surveys.
The sexes differ in the structure of the urogenital region rather than in bright nuptial colour. Males carry the modified, laterally directed intromittent organ derived from the anal fin that defines the genus, whereas females are typically larger-bodied and lack it. Beyond this functional distinction, J. maculata shows no documented dramatic sexual dichromatism of the kind seen in guppies; the species is, by livebearer standards, a plainly marked fish.
Habitat
Jenynsia maculata is endemic to the freshwaters of north-western Argentina, occurring in the provinces of Catamarca, Salta and Tucumán. Its core range lies in the Calchaquí and Santa María river basins and the upper Juramento (Salado) drainage, with the type material drawn from the Caichaquí River. This is a region of high arid Andean valleys, where rivers run through dry, mountainous terrain and freshwater habitat is naturally fragmented.
The species favours the calmer parts of these river systems. Field observations associated with its IUCN assessment describe it inhabiting secondary branches and side-channels with low current and abundant aquatic vegetation — the quieter backwaters rather than the main flow. It is recorded as a permanent freshwater resident of rivers, streams and inland wetlands, and is reported as relatively abundant where it occurs, despite the small total area of suitable habitat.
Because the species lives in a temperate, high-altitude climate zone rather than the lowland tropics, it experiences seasonal swings and is vulnerable to the droughts that periodically affect the region. Its restricted, naturally patchy distribution — an estimated extent of occurrence of only a few thousand square kilometres — concentrates the population into a small number of localities, which is central to its conservation status.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies of Jenynsia maculata are lacking, but its ecology can be inferred from its body form, its habitat and FishBase's modelled trophic level of approximately 2.9 — placing it as a low-level omnivore or micro-carnivore. Fish of this genus are generally opportunistic feeders of the slow, vegetated margins, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, algae and detritus from among the plants and substrate.
The abundant aquatic vegetation of its preferred side-channels would supply both grazing surfaces and a steady supply of small prey, and a flexible, generalist diet is consistent with the species' classification as a high-resilience fish able to rebuild its numbers quickly. As with much of this species' biology, however, the details are not documented, and any account of its feeding rests on genus-level patterns rather than dedicated observation.
The species is occasionally taken by local people as food, which incidentally confirms that it can be locally common enough to be harvested, but there is no aquarium husbandry record to draw on for its captive feeding preferences.
Mating
Jenynsia maculata reproduces by internal fertilisation, the universal condition in the Anablepidae. Males transfer sperm to females using a modified anal-fin organ analogous to the gonopodium of poeciliids, but with a defining twist: in Jenynsia this organ is asymmetric, bent to the left or to the right, and the female genital opening is correspondingly asymmetric. The practical consequence is the genus's celebrated "onesided" mating system — a left-organed male can mate only with a right-opening female and vice versa, so that the population is functionally divided into complementary mating types.
This morphological lock-and-key arrangement is one of the most remarkable mating systems among vertebrates and is the reason the family is known as the onesided livebearers. It has been the focus of comparative work on the genus, although the courtship behaviour, pairing dynamics and sperm-storage capacity of J. maculata specifically have not been described in the literature.
What can be said with confidence is that fertilisation is internal and that the species is viviparous; the finer behavioural details — display, mate choice, the role of female orientation in pairing — remain undocumented for this particular fish and are best treated as data-sparse.
Breeding
As a member of the Anablepidae, Jenynsia maculata is viviparous, giving birth to live, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Within the genus, gestation takes place in the lumen of the ovary (intraluminal gestation), and Jenynsia are matrotrophic to a modest degree — developing embryos receive some maternal nourishment beyond the initial yolk supply, rather than relying on yolk alone as strictly lecithotrophic livebearers do.
Brood size and gestation length for J. maculata specifically have not been documented; no dedicated reproductive study exists for the species, and the figures known for better-studied congeners cannot be assumed to apply. The fish's high resilience rating, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months, implies a reproductive rate sufficient for rapid recovery, but this is a modelled inference rather than a measured brood count.
Importantly, superfetation — the carrying of two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, documented in some poeciliids and goodeids — is generally not reported in Jenynsia, which typically carries a single brood at a time. It should therefore not be attributed to this species. As with several aspects of its biology, the breeding details of J. maculata remain genuinely sparse, and the honest summary is that it is a live-bearing, matrotrophic fish whose specific brood characteristics are unrecorded.
In the aquarium
Jenynsia maculata has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. It is not bred commercially, is essentially absent from the ornamental trade, and there is no body of husbandry experience to summarise — any keeping notes would be extrapolated from the genus rather than grounded in practice with this species.
What general guidance can be offered follows from its wild ecology. It is a temperate-climate fish from high Andean valleys, not a tropical lowland livebearer, so it would suit cooler, well-oxygenated water with gentle flow and dense planting that recreates the slow, vegetated side-channels it inhabits. As a small, schooling-margin fish it would presumably do best in a group, in a mature tank with stable water and quiet surroundings.
Given its Endangered status and absence from the trade, the species is of interest chiefly to conservation-minded specialist livebearer keepers and public aquaria rather than the general hobbyist. Any aquarist encountering it should treat it as a sensitive, range-restricted native fish to be documented and conserved rather than casually distributed, and should never release stock into non-native waters.
Conservation
Jenynsia maculata is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment carried out on 11 November 2020 and published in 2022 (Alonso 2022; e.T176397604A176397609). The listing rests on the species' very restricted distribution: an extent of occurrence estimated at about 3,465 mi² — well under the 5,0 mi² threshold — an area of occupancy of roughly 355 mi², occurrence at no more than a few locations, and an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat.
The principal threats are predation by the introduced rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which is established in parts of the region, together with habitat degradation from agriculture and livestock, urban and domestic sewage, agricultural effluents, solid-waste pollution, and the droughts that climate change is expected to intensify in this already arid landscape. The species occurs in no protected area, and no conservation actions are currently in place; its population trend is formally listed as unknown, though it remains relatively abundant within the small area it occupies.
The combination of a naturally tiny range, mounting human pressures and an aggressive non-native predator is what places this otherwise resilient little fish at risk. Effective protection would require safeguarding the secondary river channels and vegetated backwaters of the Calchaquí and Santa María basins and managing the spread of introduced trout — measures that, for now, remain aspirational rather than implemented.
