Limia heterandria was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1913. It belongs to the genus Limia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and is treated by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, as Limia heterandria Regan, 1913. FishBase places it in the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, and Lucinda's 2003 treatment of the Poeciliidae in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America is the standard modern reference for the species.
Limia is a genus whose centre of diversity lies in the Greater Antilles, particularly Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), with further species on Cuba, Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. Against that island-bound backdrop, Limia heterandria is the outlier: it is endemic to Venezuela on the South American mainland, making it geographically distinct from the bulk of the genus. The genus has long been close to Poecilia, and some authors have at various times subsumed Limia within Poecilia; current usage retains Limia as a distinct genus.
A persistent point of confusion surrounds the specific epithet. "Heterandria" is also the name of a separate poeciliid genus — Heterandria, which includes the well-known least killifish, Heterandria formosa. The two are not closely related, and much of the popular search material that appears under the word "heterandria" in fact concerns Heterandria formosa rather than Limia heterandria. Care should be taken not to transfer the better-documented biology of the least killifish onto this Venezuelan Limia.
Morphology
Limia heterandria is a small livebearer showing the sexual size dimorphism typical of the family. Males are the smaller sex, recorded at a maximum of about 1 in total length, while females grow larger, to roughly 1.5 in. As in other poeciliids, the females are the deeper-bodied, plainer sex, and become noticeably fuller in the abdomen when carrying developing young.
In overall form the fish is a generalised small Limia: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, and modest, rounded fins without the elaborate finnage that selective breeding has produced in guppies. Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this species are sparse in accessible sources, and the species is generally regarded as understated in appearance rather than brightly marked. Where precise pigment data are lacking, it is more honest to say the record is thin than to invent a pattern.
The single most diagnostic structure, as in all poeciliids, is the male gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally to the female. Its presence cleanly separates mature males from the larger, gonopodium-less females, and it is the structure on which much poeciliid identification depends.
Habitat
Limia heterandria is endemic to Venezuela, in northern South America, where it lives in fresh water. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish, meaning it occupies both the bottom and the open water of the small lowland and coastal water bodies of its range rather than being confined to either. As an endemic restricted to Venezuelan waters, it sits within the country's Caribbean-slope and Orinoco-basin drainage systems.
The thermal preference recorded for the species is warm — about 26 to 28 degrees Celsius — consistent with its tropical, lowland distribution. Detailed, species-specific data on the pH, hardness and flow of its native waters are not well documented in accessible sources. By analogy with the genus as a whole, many Limia favour hard, alkaline, mineral-rich water, and general Limia husbandry assumes warm, hard, alkaline conditions; this is a reasonable expectation for Limia heterandria rather than a measured fact for its particular habitats.
Because precise locality and water-chemistry records are sparse, the safest characterisation is broad: a small, warm-water Venezuelan poeciliid of slow to standing fresh waters. Anything more specific about the exact streams, ponds or marshes it occupies should be treated as provisional until better-cited Venezuelan distribution data are consulted.
Feeding
Limia heterandria is an omnivore. FishBase assigns it a trophic level of about 3.0, inferred from its relatives, which places it among the small generalist feeders of the family rather than the strict herbivores or dedicated predators. In practice this means a diet drawn from algae and biofilm, organic detritus, small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae — the broad, opportunistic menu typical of small poeciliids in warm shallow waters.
No species-specific wild dietary study is available in accessible sources, so the picture is assembled from the genus-level pattern: grazing on the algal and detrital film that coats submerged surfaces, supplemented by whatever small invertebrate prey the fish can take. The small, upturned mouth is well suited to picking food from surfaces and from the water column.
In the aquarium a fish of this kind is undemanding and accepts the standard small-livebearer fare: good-quality flake and micro-pellets, with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm to bring fish into condition. A share of vegetable or algal matter suits an omnivore of this type, and because the fish is a near-constant small grazer, several modest feedings are preferable to a single large one.
Mating
Reproduction in Limia heterandria is internal and live-bearing, as in all poeciliids. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male uses the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ, to transfer sperm. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning site — the eggs are retained and the young develop within the female before being born free-swimming.
Documented courtship behaviour specific to this species is not available in accessible sources, but the general poeciliid pattern can be expected: males pursue females more or less continuously, combining display with attempts at insemination. Many small livebearers, including Limia, are capable of storing sperm internally, allowing a single female to produce several successive broods from one mating without a male present.
It is worth noting what is not established for this species. Superfetation — the carrying of two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — occurs in some poeciliids but is not documented for Limia heterandria in accessible sources, and should not be assumed. Where the literature is silent on the fine detail of this fish's mating system, the conservative reading is simply that it follows the standard internal-fertilisation, sperm-storing pattern of the family.
Breeding
Limia heterandria is a viviparous livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation period of about 28 days and a brood of roughly 10 to 50 young — a moderate, typical small-poeciliid output that scales with the size and condition of the female.
The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed from birth. As with other livebearers, the young are vulnerable to predation by adults, including their own mother, so in the aquarium dense planting, floating cover, or separation of the gravid female are the usual means of raising good numbers. The fry take infusoria and finely powdered foods at first, graduating quickly to newly hatched brine shrimp and crushed flake as they grow.
FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months — the demographic signature of a small, fast-maturing, frequently breeding livebearer. In a stable, warm aquarium with cover for the fry, Limia heterandria should breed readily and continuously in the manner of its relatives, though specialist accounts of line-breeding this particular species are scarce.

Limia heterandria is a small, peaceful, hardy livebearer suited in principle to the same kind of care as other warm-water Limia, though it is uncommon in the hobby and dedicated, species-specific care sheets are scarce. It is harmless to humans and to tankmates, and as a modest-sized, undemanding fish it is best kept as a small group in a planted aquarium with cover.
Water should be warm — the recorded 26 to 28 degrees Celsius is a sound target — and, following general Limia practice, moderately hard and alkaline rather than soft and acidic. As with guppies and platies, stable, clean water matters more than chasing exact numbers. Keeping a female-biased ratio reduces the constant male pursuit characteristic of poeciliids, and dense or floating plants both shelter fry and give the fish security.
The main husbandry caution is one of information rather than difficulty: much of what circulates online under the name "heterandria" actually concerns the unrelated least killifish, Heterandria formosa, so an aquarist researching this fish should confirm that any care advice genuinely refers to Limia heterandria. On the available evidence the species is an easy, beginner-friendly livebearer, but it is one for which the keeper should expect to extrapolate from the genus rather than rely on a detailed published profile.
Conservation
Limia heterandria has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Its status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE) — there is no completed Red List assessment, and accordingly no assessment year and no numeric species page. It is likewise Not Evaluated under CITES and the Convention on Migratory Species. The fish is harmless to humans.
Because no formal assessment exists, nothing can be said with confidence about population trend or extinction risk for this species. What can be noted is the general context: as a Venezuelan endemic with a restricted national range, a fish of this kind is in principle more exposed to localised threats — habitat alteration, pollution, drainage modification and introduced species — than a widespread generalist would be. That is a reason for caution, not a measured conclusion.
For the aquarist, the honest summary is that this is a data-sparse species whose conservation standing is simply unassessed. Maintaining clean, accurately labelled captive stock in the specialist livebearer community has value precisely because the wild status of small, range-restricted endemics like this one is so poorly documented.
