Taxonomy & naming
Limia melanonotata was described by the American ichthyologists John Treadwell Nichols and George S. Myers in 1923, from material collected on Hispaniola. It is placed in the genus Limia within the family Poeciliidae (subfamily Poeciliinae), the New World livebearers, and in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Limia melanonotata Nichols & Myers, 1923 as the valid name; FishBase carries the species under SpecCode 27707 with the English common name blackbanded limia.
The genus Limia is essentially an Antillean group, restricted to the Greater Antilles and nearby islands — Hispaniola, Cuba, Jamaica and Grand Cayman — with Hispaniola holding the greatest diversity of species. Limia has at times been treated as a subgenus of Poecilia, reflecting how close the two lineages are, but it is widely recognised as a genus in its own right. The genus name was coined by the Cuban naturalist Felipe Poey in 1854, from the Latin limus, meaning mud, in reference to the muddy bottoms over which these fishes feed.
Reliable popular and specialist literature specific to L. melanonotata is sparse: the genus's better-known aquarium representatives, such as the humpbacked or tiger limia (L. nigrofasciata), dominate the hobby record, and much of what can be said about the blackbanded limia rests on its formal description, museum and survey records, and the general biology of the genus.
Morphology
Limia melanonotata is a small, deep-bodied poeciliid. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in standard length in males and unsexed fish, with females reaching roughly 2.5 in SL — modest dimensions typical of the genus. As the common name blackbanded limia and the epithet melanonotata ("black-backed") suggest, the fish is marked by dark pigment along the back and flanks, the patterning that gives the species its name.
As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ. The most reliable distinguishing structure is the male's gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally to the female. Males of the genus are generally the smaller, more slender and more strongly patterned sex, while females are larger and deeper-bodied, often developing a darkened gravid region when carrying young. Detailed published colour and meristic data specific to this species are limited; data are sparse beyond the basic size and pigment notes.
Habitat
Limia melanonotata is endemic to Hispaniola, occurring in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It is a freshwater, demersal, non-migratory, tropical fish that inhabits springs, headwater creeks, streams and lakes across the island; surveys have recorded it as abundant where it occurs, for example in the Yaque del Sur River drainage, although island-wide survey effort remains limited. The IUCN gives an extent of occurrence of roughly 31,000 square kilometres.
Unusually for a freshwater poeciliid, the species' recorded habitats also include hypersaline coastal lagoons, pointing to a broad tolerance of salinity that is a recurring theme among Antillean livebearers living in waters that range from freshwater springs to evaporative coastal pools. This flexibility — across spring-fed headwaters, open streams, standing lake water and salt-concentrated lagoons — is characteristic of a hardy generalist rather than a habitat specialist.
Hispaniola's geographic isolation underlies the distribution: the genus Limia is confined to the Antilles, and several of its species are single-island or even single-drainage endemics, so an island-wide presence across varied water types makes L. melanonotata one of the more widespread members of the Hispaniolan group.
Feeding
Limia melanonotata is a small omnivore feeding low in the food web. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 2.9, based on size and on the diet of its closest relatives — a value consistent with a mixed diet of algae, organic detritus, micro-invertebrates and small drifting items rather than active predation on larger prey. The genus name itself, from the Latin for mud, reflects the muddy-bottom grazing habit that Poey associated with these fishes.
In practice a limia of this kind works over substrate, plant surfaces and the water column, taking aufwuchs (the film of algae and tiny animals on submerged surfaces), diatoms, small crustaceans and insect larvae as availability allows. Like other poeciliids it is an opportunistic, near-continuous grazer rather than a specialist, which is part of why the species copes with such a range of habitats.

Limia melanonotata is rarely seen in the general aquarium trade and is mainly a fish for livebearer specialists; the limia most hobbyists encounter is the humpbacked L. nigrofasciata rather than this species. Where it is kept, the broad habitat tolerance recorded in the wild — spring-fed freshwater through to hypersaline lagoons — suggests an adaptable, hardy fish, and limias as a group are generally regarded as undemanding to maintain in warm, hard, alkaline water.
Given the wild profile, a keeper would aim for tropical temperatures and clean, well-oxygenated water of moderate to high hardness; the species' association with coastal lagoons indicates it would tolerate, and may benefit from, a little added salinity, though it is found in pure freshwater as well. As small, group-living livebearers, limias are best kept in a small shoal, and like all poeciliids they breed readily in captivity, so providing cover for fry and managing the resulting population is the main husbandry task.

These threats fall on the inland wetland habitats the species depends on, and because the genus Limia is confined to the Antilles — with many species restricted to single islands or drainages — the long-term security of even a widespread, currently Least Concern endemic rests on the condition of a finite set of island waters.
