Taxonomy & naming
Limia immaculata was described by Luis René Rivas in 1980 and is placed in the genus Limia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, and the subfamily Poeciliinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Limia immaculata Rivas, 1980 as the valid name. FishBase records it under SpecCode 27706, citing the Poeciliidae checklist of Lucinda (2003) in the Reis, Kullander & Ferraris catalogue of South American freshwater fishes for its current standing.
The genus Limia is centred on the Greater Antilles, and the great majority of its species are Hispaniolan: of roughly 23 recognised Limia, around 19 occur on the island of Hispaniola, shared between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Lake Miragoâne alone holds a cluster of these — on the order of nine Limia species — that together form a monophyletic group. Molecular work (Spikes and colleagues, 2021) recovered the Miragoâne Limia as descendants of a single ancestral lineage, with a cytochrome-b phylogeny so poorly resolved that the species fall out as an unresolved polytomy, a signature of very recent and rapid divergence. L. immaculata is one node in that young radiation, which is why its distinctness is read more clearly in morphology and ecology than in a single mitochondrial gene tree.
The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning mud, a reference by Poey (1854) to the muddy-bottom feeding habits of these fishes. The specific epithet immaculata is Latin for "unspotted" or "unblemished," describing the plain, largely unmarked body that also gives the species its English name, the plain limia.
Morphology
Limia immaculata is a small fish with pronounced sexual size dimorphism. Males are diminutive, reaching about 1 in standard length, while females grow considerably larger, to roughly 1.5 in standard length (FishBase, after Rivas). This marked difference in body size between the sexes is a recurring feature across the Lake Miragoâne Limia flock and is consistent with the general poeciliid pattern in which females are the larger, bodied sex and males the smaller, slender one.
As the epithet immaculata signals, the species is plainly coloured, lacking the bold spotting or barring seen in some of its relatives — a generally unmarked body that distinguishes it within the lake assemblage. Members of the Miragoâne flock occupy broadly similar body forms and life-history profiles, and detailed external coloration data specific to L. immaculata are sparse beyond its characteristically plain appearance. As a poeciliid, the male carries a gonopodium — a rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — which is the clearest external mark of a mature male.
Reported length–weight parameters for the species (Bayesian estimates of a ≈ 0.00851 and b ≈ 3.15 on total length) and a trophic level near 3.0 round out the available quantitative picture. Beyond these figures and the size-dimorphism data, fine morphometric description of L. immaculata in the popular literature is limited, and this profile follows the rule of saying less rather than guessing where the data are thin.
Habitat
Limia immaculata is endemic to Lake Miragoâne (Étang de Miragoâne) in the Sud department of south-western Haiti, and is found nowhere else. The lake is one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the insular Caribbean — a karst lake of notable depth and clarity — and it is the entire world range of this species. FishBase characterises the fish as a tropical, freshwater, demersal and non-migratory species, living in and over the bottom waters of the lake.
Lake Miragoâne functions as a self-contained evolutionary theatre. Its isolation has allowed a single colonising Limia lineage to diversify in place into the present species flock, a process that researchers explicitly compare to the adaptive radiations of cichlids in the African Rift lakes. L. immaculata shares this single basin with its congeners, and the species partition a relatively confined set of habitats and resources within it.
Because the entire population is confined to one lake, the fish's fortunes are tied directly to that water body's condition. The lake and its surroundings face pressures from deforestation of the watershed and associated declines in water quality, and conservation and research sources flag protection of Lake Miragoâne as an urgent priority — not only for this species but for the whole endemic Limia community it supports.
Feeding
Limia immaculata is a small omnivore feeding low in the food web; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0. The genus name itself points to bottom-oriented feeding — Poey coined Limia from the Latin for mud in reference to these fishes' muddy-substrate feeding habits — and as a demersal species L. immaculata takes much of its food in and over the lake bed, where it would be expected to graze on algae, detritus, biofilm and small invertebrates.
Within the Lake Miragoâne flock, the various Limia occupy very similar ecological niches with broadly similar life-history traits, which raises the long-standing question of how so many closely related species coexist on shared resources. Work on the flock's feeding strategies (Rodríguez-Silva and colleagues, 2021) found that while the species are ecologically alike, at least one differs in lower-jaw morphology in a way that suggests a degree of dietary specialisation — evidence that fine partitioning of feeding, rather than gross dietary divergence, may help the assemblage divide the lake.
Species-specific diet data for L. immaculata itself are not detailed in the available sources, so beyond its low trophic position and bottom-feeding habits the precise composition of its wild diet is best treated as data-sparse.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Limia immaculata reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male inseminates the female using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin that defines the New World livebearers; sperm is transferred directly rather than eggs being shed and fertilised externally. This mode of reproduction, shared across the family, is the reason these fishes give birth to live young rather than spawning.
The strong size dimorphism between the small males and the larger females of L. immaculata sets the stage for the courtship and mating dynamics typical of the genus, in which small, mobile males approach much larger females to attempt insemination. Detailed behavioural studies of courtship, male display and mate choice specific to L. immaculata are not available in the sources at hand, and this profile does not extrapolate them.
What can be said is that, as in other Limia and poeciliids generally, females are likely able to store sperm internally and the mating system operates continuously rather than in a defined seasonal spawning event — but the species-specific particulars remain among the data gaps for this little-studied Haitian endemic.

Limia immaculata is a livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The reproductive mode of the genus is viviparous in the lecithotrophic sense — the embryos are nourished by their own yolk reserves rather than by a significant placental supply from the mother. Limia therefore differ from the strongly matrotrophic poeciliids such as Heterandria and some Poeciliopsis, in which the mother provisions embryos throughout gestation; in Limia the egg yolk does most of the feeding.
FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, noting a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months, which is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction characteristic of small livebearers. Precise figures for gestation length, brood size and any superfetation (the capacity to carry overlapping broods at different developmental stages, seen in some poeciliids) are not reported for L. immaculata in the available sources, and are not assumed here.
As with other members of the Lake Miragoâne flock, the broad picture is of a small, fast-reproducing live-bearing fish whose detailed reproductive parameters remain poorly documented — a reflection of how little focused breeding study this single-lake endemic has received.
In the aquarium
Limia immaculata is a true rarity in the hobby rather than a commonly traded aquarium fish; it is known to keepers chiefly through specialist livebearer circles and conservation-minded maintenance of Lake Miragoâne species, if at all. As a result there is no large body of established husbandry lore for this particular species, and any aquarium keeping is best approached by analogy to other small Limia and to the conditions of its native lake.
Its wild home — a warm, tropical karst lake — implies a fish suited to warm, hard, alkaline fresh water, the general profile that most Limia tolerate well. Like its relatives it would be expected to be a peaceful, small, bottom-oriented livebearer best kept in a group, with the usual caveat that small males pursue females persistently. Given the species' conservation status, the responsible framing of any captive population is as ark or study stock, maintained carefully and never released.
Because documented aquarium experience specific to L. immaculata is so limited, this profile deliberately avoids prescribing exact parameters the sources do not support. Keepers of the Lake Miragoâne Limia generally treat them as undemanding warm-water livebearers, but the precise figures here are best read as guidance by analogy rather than tested husbandry for this species.
Conservation
Limia immaculata is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 2 June 2020), under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). That listing reflects its status as a single-locality, restricted-range endemic: the entire global population is confined to Lake Miragoâne in south-western Haiti, so any decline in the extent or quality of that one habitat threatens the whole species at once.
The principal pressures are habitat-based. Deforestation of the lake's watershed and consequent degradation of water quality are the documented concerns, and they bear on the lake's entire endemic fish community, not L. immaculata alone. With nine or so Limia species packed into this one basin, Lake Miragoâne is both a biodiversity hotspot for the genus and a single point of failure — the loss of the lake would mean the simultaneous loss of an entire in-situ radiation.
For these reasons specialist conservation and research sources flag protection of Lake Miragoâne as urgent. The species is not evaluated under CITES or CMS, and faces no fishing pressure of note (FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and the fish as harmless to humans); its survival hinges almost entirely on the safeguarding of its single Haitian lake.
