Nomorhamphus manifestus is a small, viviparous halfbeak known from almost nothing — a single 1934 collection of 198 specimens taken at Solsona, in Ilocos Norte on the island of Luzon, Philippines, and not described until Andrew Meisner revised the viviparous halfbeaks in 2001. That locality is itself the curiosity: nearly every other Nomorhamphus is endemic to Sulawesi, so a member of the genus living far to the north on Luzon stands out as a biogeographic outlier. It is a live-bearing fish — internally fertilised, giving birth to free-swimming young — but beyond its anatomy and its type series, its biology is essentially unrecorded, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus manifestus was described by Andrew D. Meisner in 2001, in his phylogenetic revision of the viviparous halfbeak genera Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 133: 199–283). The species was erected on museum material — a series of 198 specimens collected in a single event in 1934 at Solsona, Ilocos Norte Province, on Luzon in the Philippines — rather than from any living or recently sampled population. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid. The original combination was published as Nomorhamphus manifesta; because the genus Nomorhamphus is masculine, the epithet has been corrected to the masculine form manifestus in current usage.

The genus belongs to the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of the order Beloniformes — a lineage distinct from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks once lumped with them in the Hemiramphidae. Within that family, Nomorhamphus and its sister genus Dermogenys are the viviparous halfbeaks, small freshwater surface fishes with the elongated lower jaw that gives the group its name. What makes N. manifestus taxonomically notable is its distribution: the genus is otherwise centred on Sulawesi, where the great majority of its species are endemic, so a Nomorhamphus from Luzon is a marked geographic outlier whose placement and origin invite further study.

The generic name combines Greek elements relating to a filament or thread and rhamphos, a beak or bill, in reference to the produced lower jaw of these halfbeaks. The species epithet manifestus derives from Latin and refers to the fish being plain or unadorned — a pointed comment on the lack of the distinctive body pigmentation seen in some of its relatives.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus manifestus is a small halfbeak with pronounced sexual size dimorphism. Females reach about 2.5 in in standard length, while males are considerably smaller at roughly 1.5 in SL — the larger female is the general rule among the viviparous halfbeaks, where the female must carry developing young internally. As the epithet manifestus ("unadorned") signals, the species is described as lacking the conspicuous body pigmentation found in some congeners; it is a comparatively plain fish without the bold jaw or fin coloration that distinguishes certain Sulawesi Nomorhamphus.

In general form the fish follows the halfbeak body plan: slender and elongate, built for life at the water surface, with the lower jaw produced into the characteristic "beak." As in all viviparous halfbeaks, the male's anal fin is modified into an intromittent organ — the andropodium of the Zenarchopteridae, the functional counterpart of the poeciliid gonopodium — used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Beyond these basic features and the size figures from the type series, detailed morphological and meristic data for living fish are sparse, since the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum material.

Because N. manifestus has not entered the aquarium hobby and has not been the subject of recent field collection, there are no photographs of living specimens on the standard databases and no record of coloration in life. Statements about its appearance therefore rest on the preserved type series and Meisner's 2001 description rather than on observation of healthy, freshly caught fish.

Habitat

The species is recorded only from its type locality: Solsona, in Ilocos Norte Province at the northern end of Luzon, the Philippines. FishBase characterises it tersely as a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish of Asia (Philippines), and the IUCN assessment places it in inland freshwater wetlands — permanent rivers, streams and creeks. Like other viviparous halfbeaks, it would be expected to occupy the upper layers of flowing or standing fresh water, where its upturned mouth and surface-oriented body plan suit it to feeding at the air–water interface.

The exact extent of the species' range is unknown. Because it is documented from a single 1934 collection, the IUCN could only estimate a very small extent of occurrence — on the order of 104 mi² around the type locality — while cautioning that the true distribution is simply not established. It is entirely possible the fish is more widespread on Luzon than the single record suggests, but no data exist to confirm this.

The wider biogeographic context is the most striking thing about its habitat. The genus Nomorhamphus is otherwise a Sulawesi radiation, so the presence of a member on Luzon — separated from Sulawesi by Wallace's Line and a wide stretch of sea — is unusual and not fully explained. Whether this reflects a natural relict distribution or some other history is among the open questions the species poses.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Nomorhamphus manifestus has been published; what can be said is inferred from its anatomy and from its viviparous halfbeak relatives. FishBase gives a modelled trophic level of roughly 3.1, consistent with a small carnivore or omnivore rather than a herbivore. The surface-oriented body and produced lower jaw of halfbeaks are adaptations for taking prey at and just below the water surface.

In the viviparous halfbeaks generally, the typical diet is small surface and drifting invertebrates — insects that fall onto the water, emerging aquatic insects, mosquito and other dipteran larvae, and small crustaceans taken from the upper water column. A fish of this build and size would be expected to feed in the same way, picking items from the surface film and the water immediately beneath it.

Beyond this general picture, the feeding ecology of N. manifestus is unrecorded. With the species known only from preserved museum material and never studied in life, any more specific account of what it eats, or how its diet shifts seasonally or with growth, would be speculation rather than documented fact.

Mating

Nomorhamphus manifestus is internally fertilised, as Meisner established in placing it among the viviparous halfbeaks. Fertilisation in this group is achieved by the male's modified anal fin — the andropodium, the zenarchopterid equivalent of the poeciliid gonopodium — through which sperm is transferred directly to the female rather than being shed into the water over a clutch of eggs. This internal mode is the defining reproductive feature uniting Nomorhamphus and Dermogenys and separating them from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks.

No courtship or mating behaviour has been described for this particular species. In viviparous halfbeaks more broadly, males approach and position alongside females to make contact with the andropodium, and as in many internally fertilising fishes the female may be able to store sperm for some period, allowing successive broods to develop from a single insemination. Whether these patterns hold precisely in N. manifestus is not documented.

The marked size difference between the sexes — females to about 2.5 in SL, males to about 1.5 in SL — fits the general livebearer pattern in which the female's larger body accommodates the developing young while the male remains small. Beyond this anatomical inference, the mating system of the species is unstudied, and the cache notes that superfetation (the carrying of overlapping broods at different stages) is neither confirmed nor ruled out for it.

Breeding

The species is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than depositing eggs. This is stated explicitly in Meisner's 2001 work and echoed in the IUCN assessment, which records the fish as internally fertilised and live-bearing. It is the central, and almost the only, known fact about its reproduction.

There are no published figures for gestation length, brood size, or the size of newborn young in Nomorhamphus manifestus. In related viviparous halfbeaks, broods are typically modest in number and the young are born as fully formed miniature fish able to swim and feed immediately, but applying specific numbers to this species would be guesswork given the absence of any breeding observation. Data here are genuinely sparse.

Nothing is known of where or when the species breeds in the wild, or of any seasonal pattern to reproduction, because it has never been studied as a living population. As with much of its biology, the breeding account rests on the single inference that it is a livebearer and on what is generally true of its close relatives, not on direct observation of N. manifestus itself.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus manifestus has no presence in the aquarium hobby. The IUCN assessment explicitly notes that the species is not reported as an aquarium fish and does not appear in surveys of the Philippine ornamental-fish trade, and no dedicated husbandry or care source exists for it. It is known to science essentially from a single 1934 museum collection and Meisner's 2001 revision, with no record of the fish being kept or bred in captivity.

Any husbandry expectations would therefore have to be borrowed from its congeners rather than drawn from experience with this species. Viviparous halfbeaks in general are surface-dwelling fishes that can be jumpy and prone to damaging their delicate beaks at the surface, are sensitive to water quality, and do best in clean, well-oxygenated water with calm tankmates — but these are properties of the group, not documented traits of N. manifestus.

The honest position is that this is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. There is no established stock, no care literature, and no observed behaviour in captivity to report. For the aquarist its interest is taxonomic and biogeographic — a plain little halfbeak that turned up far from the rest of its genus — rather than as a fish to acquire and keep.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus manifestus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (Torres, Palla & Kesner-Reyes 2021; assessed 30 March 2020, published 2021). The Data Deficient category reflects exactly the situation described throughout this account: the species is known from a single historical collection, its precise range is unknown, and there is no information on its population size, population trend, exploitation, or the threats it may face. Without these data the assessors could not place it in a threat category.

The assessment did note some context. The original 1934 collection yielded 198 specimens in a single event, which the assessors suggested may indicate the fish is locally common or abundant where it occurs, even though its overall status is unknown. The estimated extent of occurrence around the type locality is small — about 104 mi² — but this figure is an artefact of the single known record rather than a measured range, and the true distribution could be larger.

For a Data Deficient species the practical conservation need is information: targeted survey of the streams and creeks around Solsona and the wider Ilocos Norte region to confirm whether the fish persists, to map its actual range, and to gauge its population and any pressures on it. The species is not reported as a food or ornamental fish, so direct exploitation does not appear to be a concern; the open questions are simply whether it is still there, how widespread it is, and whether its freshwater habitat is secure.
