Taxonomy & naming
Nomorhamphus ravnaki was described by Brembach in 1991 from south Sulawesi, Indonesia. It sits within the genus Nomorhamphus, in the family Zenarchopteridae — the internally fertilising halfbeaks, a beloniform lineage distinct from the egg-scattering marine halfbeaks of the Hemiramphidae. The genus is endemic to Sulawesi, where its species inhabit lakes, streams and hillstreams across the central, southern and south-eastern parts of the island.
The valid status of N. ravnaki is contested. FishBase, following Meisner (2001), regards Nomorhamphus ravnaki Brembach, 1991 as a junior synonym of Nomorhamphus brembachi Vogt, 1978, and explicitly notes that the species page is slated for removal. Under that treatment the name ravnaki simply drops into the synonymy of the older brembachi, with both forms sharing the same primary reference (Kottelat, Whitten, Kartikasari & Wirjoatmodjo's 1993 Freshwater Fishes of Western Indonesia and Sulawesi) and the same range in south Sulawesi. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, carries the species under spid 60283; readers should note that the binomial may be subsumed under N. brembachi in current usage.
The genus name derives from Greek elements referring to the beak — the elongated lower jaw shared by the halfbeaks. The specific epithet ravnaki is a patronym; the cache does not record the honoree, so no etymology is asserted here beyond the genus. Because the species' identity is disputed, this account stays close to what is documented for the genus and for the senior synonym, and notes where data are sparse rather than filling gaps by inference.

Nomorhamphus ravnaki is a small fish: FishBase gives a maximum length of about 3.5 in SL for the male or unsexed form, citing Kottelat et al. (1993). Like all members of the genus it has the characteristic halfbeak body plan — an elongate, pike-like profile with the dorsal and anal fins set far back, adapted to a life spent hanging just beneath the water's surface. The defining feature is the prolonged lower jaw, the "beak," which projects well beyond the short upper jaw; in Nomorhamphus this lower-jaw extension is typically fleshier and shorter than in the long-billed wrestling halfbeaks of the genus Dermogenys.
The genus shows clear sexual dimorphism, with females growing larger and heavier-bodied than males, and males carrying the modified anal fin used in reproduction. In Nomorhamphus the male's intromittent structure is an andropodium — a modification of the anal fin — rather than the true gonopodium of the New World poeciliids; the two organs are analogous reproductive adaptations that evolved independently in distantly related livebearing lineages. Males of the genus are generally the more boldly marked sex, often with dark or red pigment on the beak tip and fins.
Species-specific colour and meristic detail for N. ravnaki are sparse in accessible sources, a situation compounded by its disputed synonymy with N. brembachi. Courtship in the genus, as documented in hobbyist observations, is comparatively restrained and far less relentless than the constant chasing seen in guppies. Males display by flaring and following behind and below a female, and reproduction in these halfbeaks is described as much less prolific than in the New World livebearers — keepers note that the female appears to play a gating role, with the male fertilising only after a behavioural cue from her. The upshot is that pairs spawn more sporadically and in smaller numbers than poeciliids of comparable size.
Sexual dimorphism underpins this system: females are the larger sex and males carry the andropodium and tend to be more strongly marked.
