Nomorhamphus rex is a viviparous halfbeak from the forested headwater streams of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, described only in 2012 and named for its teeth. Like its relatives among the internally fertilising halfbeaks, it carries a prolonged lower jaw and bears live young rather than scattering eggs — but what set it apart for its describers was the dentition: larger specimens develop multiple rows of conical teeth that reminded the authors of the jaws of Tyrannosaurus rex, hence the regal epithet. It is a small, surface-oriented stream fish of clear, fast-flowing water, one of a growing roster of Nomorhamphus endemic to the island of Sulawesi.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus rex was described in 2012 by Huylebrouck, Hadiaty and Herder in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, from material collected in the headwater drainages of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The description brought the number of Nomorhamphus species endemic to Sulawesi to ten; the genus as a whole also occurs in the Philippines, where a further group of species is found. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Nomorhamphus rex Huylebrouck, Hadiaty & Herder, 2012 as the valid name, placing it in the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of the order Beloniformes.

The holotype is a 1.5 in SL male from the Wewu River, a headwater of the Cerekang River drainage west of Lake Matano, collected by F. Herder and R. K. Hadiaty in 2004. The species was diagnosed in part by features of the male copulatory organ — the andropodium bears a sickle-shaped spiculus curved dorsally — and by a relatively long lower jaw. The most distinctive character, and the source of the name, is the dentition: specimens larger than about 1.5 in SL develop multiple rows of conical teeth, a condition the authors likened to that of Tyrannosaurus rex. The species epithet rex is Latin for "king," treated as a noun in apposition, referring to those teeth.

The genus name Nomorhamphus combines the Greek nema, a filament or thread, with rhamphos, a bill or beak — a reference to the elongated, filament-like lower jaw characteristic of these halfbeaks. A population from Tana Toraja differs in predorsal scale count (76–83 versus 45–51 in the type series) but was treated by the describers as conspecific, leaving open the possibility of further structure within the species.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus rex is a small, elongate, laterally compressed halfbeak. Males are the smaller sex, reaching about 1.5 in standard length, while females are larger, to roughly 2.5 in SL — the holotype male measures 1.5 in SL and the largest female paratype 2.5 in SL. The body is slender with a compressed cross-section, the dorsal fin set well back and supported by 11 to 13 soft rays, the anal fin by 14 to 15, and the vertebral count ranging from 37 to 40.

The defining external feature of the genus is the prolonged lower jaw, or beak, which in this species is relatively long, contained roughly 5.7 to 11.3 times in the standard length. In life the fish is yellowish-brown to grey on the body, with the lips and beak flushed red and the iris an iridescent blue. Males carry a red spot on the anal fin, and both sexes show a distinct black, oval spot just anterior to the pectoral fin — a useful field mark.

As in all internally fertilising halfbeaks, the male's anal fin is modified into a copulatory organ, here termed an andropodium, distinct from the rod-like gonopodium of New World poeciliids. In N. rex this organ bears a sickle-shaped spiculus that curves dorsally, one of the features used to separate the species from its congeners. The conical, multi-rowed teeth that give the fish its name develop with size and are most evident in larger individuals.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Sulawesi Selatan (South Sulawesi), Indonesia, where it is known from three sites in the original description. Two are small, fast-flowing forest streams: the Wewu River, a tributary of the Cerekang drainage west of Lake Matano, and the Toletole River, a tributary of the small Kawata River; both drainages ultimately reach the Bone Bay estuary near the Malili Lakes (Larona) system. The third locality is markedly different — a natural clearwater karst pool near Tilanga village in Tana Toraja, a spring-fed pond up to about 13 ft deep, 98–131 ft long and as much as 33 ft wide, draining toward the Makassar Strait.

The typical stream habitat consists of small, fast-flowing rivers only a few metres wide, partly shaded by overhanging forest canopy, with beds of gravel and sand and clear water. These are upland, clearwater environments rather than turbid lowland rivers. The fish is pelagic in habit, occupying the upper water column where its long beak suits surface- and near-surface feeding.

At the type locality N. rex occurs alongside the ricefish Oryzias celebensis and the sailfin silverside Telmatherina cf. bonti, both Sulawesi natives, as well as a suite of introduced fishes — Anabas testudineus, Channa striata, Trichopodus pectoralis, a Mugilogobius, Aplocheilus panchax and, notably, the guppy Poecilia reticulata, itself a widely introduced livebearer. The presence of these non-native species in the same headwaters is a reminder that even these forested upland streams are not free of human-mediated change.

Feeding

Direct dietary observations for Nomorhamphus rex were not reported in the original description, so the species' feeding ecology is inferred from its relatives and its FishBase trophic placement. Halfbeaks of this group are surface-oriented micro-predators and insectivores, and the genus is assigned a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a diet dominated by small animal prey.

The elongated lower jaw is a feeding adaptation well suited to taking items from the water surface and the upper water column — drifting insects, terrestrial arthropods fallen from the overhanging canopy, and small aquatic invertebrates. In the shaded, forest-lined streams it inhabits, allochthonous input from the canopy is likely a meaningful food source. The multiple rows of conical teeth that distinguish larger individuals suggest a capacity to grip and process active, slippery prey.

In the absence of stomach-content data the specifics remain data sparse, and any aquarium feeding regime should follow the general pattern for viviparous halfbeaks: small live and surface-presented foods rather than sinking pellets. No captive husbandry account specific to this species is available.

Mating

Nomorhamphus, together with the related halfbeak genera Dermogenys and Hemirhamphodon, practises internal fertilisation — a reproductive mode that distinguishes the Zenarchopteridae from most other beloniforms and is the reason these fishes are grouped with the world's live-bearing toothcarps in the aquarium hobby. Fertilisation is achieved not with the rod-like gonopodium of New World poeciliids but with an andropodium, a copulatory organ formed from the modified anal fin. In N. rex this andropodium carries a dorsally curved, sickle-shaped spiculus, a structural detail used in the species' diagnosis.

Sexual dimorphism in the genus extends beyond the male's modified fin: males of N. rex are smaller than females, carry a red spot on the anal fin, and develop the characteristic dentition more conspicuously at size. As in other internally fertilising halfbeaks, mating involves the male approaching the female and transferring sperm via the andropodium, after which development proceeds internally.

The fine details of courtship and mating behaviour specific to N. rex were not documented in the describing study, and no aquarium breeding account exists for the species. What can be stated with confidence is the reproductive mode — internal fertilisation followed by viviparity — which it shares with its congeners; the behavioural specifics remain data sparse.

Breeding

Nomorhamphus rex is viviparous: like Dermogenys and Hemirhamphodon, the genus retains the fertilised eggs internally and gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. This places the species among the live-bearing fishes despite belonging to an entirely different lineage from the New World Poeciliidae — a case of convergent evolution toward internal development within the halfbeaks.

Species-specific reproductive parameters — brood size, gestation length, and whether superfetation (the carrying of overlapping broods at different stages, known in some viviparous halfbeaks) occurs — were not reported in the original description and have not, so far as the available sources show, been documented for N. rex. Among aquarium-kept Nomorhamphus and Dermogenys, broods are typically modest in number and the young are born as comparatively large, fully formed fry, but extrapolating exact figures to this newly described species would be guesswork.

With no published captive-breeding record for N. rex, the practical breeding profile is best described as data sparse. The reliable statement is the mode — internal fertilisation and live birth — while brood size, gestation and the presence or absence of superfetation in this particular species remain undocumented.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus rex is not an established aquarium fish, and no species-specific husbandry literature exists for it. It was described from wild-caught material in 2012, and the cache assembled for this profile contains no hobby or forum account of the species in captivity. Any keeping notes must therefore be read as general guidance for viviparous Sulawesi halfbeaks rather than tested advice for this species.

What its natural habitat implies is a fish adapted to clear, cool-to-warm, fast-flowing forest streams with sand and gravel beds — conditions suggesting an aquarium with good current, high oxygenation, clean water and a surface the fish can patrol with its long beak. Halfbeaks in general are nervous, surface-dwelling fishes prone to startling and jaw damage against tank walls and lids, so a covered, calm setting and floating cover are usually recommended for the group. Surface-presented small live foods suit the genus better than sinking prepared diets.

Given the absence of any documented trade or captive population, N. rex should be regarded as a wild species of scientific interest rather than a hobby fish. Aquarists encountering halfbeaks under this name should treat the identification cautiously, since several similar Sulawesi Nomorhamphus exist and the genus is taxonomically active.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus rex is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 29 June 2018. Not every member of the genus shares this status — the congener Nomorhamphus celebensis, for instance, is assessed as Endangered — so the Least Concern listing reflects an evaluation of this species' particular range and circumstances rather than a blanket judgement on Sulawesi halfbeaks. The species has not been evaluated under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species.

That said, the species is narrowly distributed: it is endemic to South Sulawesi and was described from only three sites, two small forest streams and one karst pool. Restricted-range stream fishes of this kind are inherently sensitive to localised habitat change — deforestation along the stream margins, alteration of flow, and the spread of introduced fishes, several of which already share its waters. The forest canopy that shades and feeds these streams is itself part of the habitat that supports the fish.

For a species this recently described and this geographically confined, continued monitoring matters more than its current Least Concern label might suggest. The responsible position is to treat the upland clearwater streams of South Sulawesi — and the endemic fauna they hold, including this fish — as habitats whose integrity should not be assumed to be secure.
