Nomorhamphus sagittarius is a small, viviparous halfbeak known only from a handful of clear forest streams in the Mangolo river basin of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Described in 2014 and named for its arrow-like body, it belongs to the Zenarchopteridae — the freshwater halfbeaks of the Indo-Australian archipelago, an unusual lineage of surface-dwelling fishes in which the females, not the males, are the larger sex, and in which internal fertilisation and live birth replace the egg-scattering of most fishes. Endemic to a single small drainage and threatened by mining, deforestation and pollution, it is assessed as Endangered, and it remains far better documented as a wild fish than as an aquarium one.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus sagittarius was described in 2014 by Jan Huylebrouck, Renny K. Hadiaty and Fabian Herder in a paper in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology that erected two new viviparous halfbeaks endemic to Sulawesi Tenggara (Southeast Sulawesi), Indonesia. The species is placed in the family Zenarchopteridae, the freshwater and estuarine halfbeaks of the Indo-Australian region, within the order Beloniformes — the same broad assemblage that contains the needlefishes and flyingfishes. The family-and-genus placement follows Kottelat's 2013 catalogue of the inland fishes of the region. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, which is retained here as Nomorhamphus sagittarius Huylebrouck, Hadiaty & Herder, 2014.

The genus name Nomorhamphus combines Greek roots referring to the beak-like jaws characteristic of halfbeaks, in which the lower jaw is conspicuously elongated while the upper is short. The species epithet sagittarius is Latin for "archer," a noun in apposition alluding to the slender, arrow-like shape of the body — the feature that most readily separates the fish in life. The genus Nomorhamphus is itself a radiation of small live-bearing halfbeaks centred on Sulawesi and the surrounding islands, with many species confined to single river systems, so a narrowly endemic species such as this one is typical rather than exceptional for the group.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus sagittarius is a small, elongate halfbeak with the characteristic extended lower jaw of the family and a slender, arrow-like body. The species shows marked sexual size dimorphism in the direction unusual among livebearers: the females are substantially larger than the males. Females reach about 3 in standard length (recorded to roughly 3 in SL), while males reach only about 1.5 in SL (to roughly 1.5 in SL). Beyond size, males differ from females in having longer lower jaws and larger eyes.

The original description distinguishes the species by a combination of features including the elongated lower jaw, a general lack of black pigmentation on the fins, a black spot at the base of the pectoral fin, and the form of the male copulatory structure — a lanceolate, dorsally curved spiculus in the andropodium, the modified anal fin used to transfer sperm. The body is brown overall. As with halfbeaks generally, the fish is built for life just beneath the water surface: a long, low body, an upturned mouth and a long lower jaw suited to taking food from the surface film.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Sulawesi, where it is known only from three streams in the Mangolo river basin and its tributaries — including the rivers Tawo-Tawo and Watumbasi — in Sulawesi Tenggara (Southeast Sulawesi), Indonesia. Its extent of occurrence is tiny, estimated at roughly 1,195 km2, and it is regarded as occurring at three or fewer threat-defined locations. This is a freshwater, surface-oriented fish of small running waters rather than lakes.

The recorded habitat is clear-water streams and small rivers, roughly 3–26 ft wide and 4–39.5 in deep, with sandy, rocky or muddy substrates, at least moderate flow, forest canopy cover overhead and riparian vegetation along the banks. The fish has also been recorded at a site with elevated turbidity caused by gold mining, suggesting it can tolerate some degree of turbidity or pollution, though this is plainly not its preferred condition. The combination of a forested catchment, clear flowing water and a very small range makes the species highly sensitive to disturbance of its few streams.

Feeding

Species-specific dietary data for Nomorhamphus sagittarius are sparse, but its feeding ecology can be read from its anatomy and from what is known of freshwater halfbeaks generally. As a surface-dwelling fish with an upturned mouth and elongated lower jaw, it is adapted to taking food from the water surface and the uppermost layer of the water column. Halfbeaks of this kind are insectivores and micro-predators, feeding heavily on terrestrial insects that fall onto the water, on emerging aquatic insects, and on other small drifting invertebrates.

In the wild, the forest canopy over its streams is significant for feeding as well as shelter: overhanging vegetation delivers a steady rain of terrestrial arthropods to the surface, the foraging zone of a halfbeak. In aquarium accounts of the genus, captive Nomorhamphus take floating foods and small insects readily and feed best at the surface, consistent with this insect-and-surface-drift natural diet. Beyond this general picture, detailed gut-content or feeding studies specific to N. sagittarius are not available.

Mating

Like all members of the genus, Nomorhamphus sagittarius is viviparous: fertilisation is internal and the female gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs. In place of the rod-like gonopodium of the New World poeciliids, male halfbeaks of this lineage use an andropodium — a modified anal fin — to transfer sperm. In this species the diagnostic male structure is a lanceolate, dorsally curved spiculus within the andropodium, one of the features used to separate it from its relatives.

Courtship and mating in freshwater halfbeaks differ in character from the relentless pursuit seen in guppies and their kin. Hobbyist observations of the genus describe a more cooperative system in which the male does not simply force copulation: instead he courts more or less continuously, and mating proceeds when the female signals readiness — keepers report the female releasing a cue into the water column as a sign of receptivity. Because the male's larger relatives among livebearers are the brightly ornamented sex, it is worth noting that in this halfbeak the size relationship is reversed, with females the larger sex; precise descriptions of display behaviour specific to N. sagittarius are not documented, and the account here draws on genus-level observation.

Breeding

Nomorhamphus sagittarius gives birth to fully formed live young, the developing embryos being carried internally after internal fertilisation. Viviparity is confirmed for the genus, and the IUCN account explicitly notes that members of Nomorhamphus are viviparous and give birth to live young. As in other freshwater halfbeaks, the species is not a prolific breeder by livebearer standards: brood sizes in the genus are small, far smaller than the dozens of fry a guppy can drop, with larger females producing the larger batches.

Genus-level aquarium experience gives a useful picture of the reproductive pattern even though it is not specific to this species. Broods are few in number — one large female of a related Sulawesi halfbeak gave birth to only about three fry — but the fry are large at birth, on the order of 1 in, and able to take small foods almost immediately. Newborns may take a day to straighten and swim normally. A darkening of the area around the female's vent is a sign that birth is imminent. There is no parental care; as with livebearers generally, fry do best given cover or separation. Detailed gestation length, superfetation status and brood frequency for N. sagittarius specifically have not been published — for this species the breeding record is best summarised as data sparse but consistent with a low-fecundity, large-fry viviparous halfbeak.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus sagittarius is, at most, an oddball rarely seen in the trade, and there is no substantial body of keeping experience specific to it. What guidance exists comes from the genus as a whole, where the freshwater halfbeaks — sometimes sold under names such as Celebes halfbeak — are kept as specialist surface-dwellers. They suit planted nano to medium aquaria, spend their time at the top of the tank, and feed on floating foods and small insects taken at the surface. A secure cover is essential, as surface-oriented halfbeaks are prone to startling and jumping.

These are not beginner livebearers. They are jumpy, surface-bound fish that do best with calm tankmates, gentle flow, open swimming space at the surface and a steady supply of small live or floating foods; they are reported to be sensitive to abrupt changes and to fare poorly when crowded or harassed. Because the species is a narrowly endemic, Endangered wild fish with no established aquarium strain, any specimens in the hobby should be regarded as conservation-sensitive, and the realistic expectation is that detailed husbandry must be inferred from its better-known congeners rather than from a settled care record for this species.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus sagittarius is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting its very small range — an extent of occurrence of about 1,195 km2 — combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat and its restriction to three or fewer locations. The assessment was carried out on 16 January 2020 (published 2020) by A. Daniels of the IUCN Freshwater Biodiversity Unit, reviewed by T. J. Lyons; the population trend is recorded as unknown, as no population data exist.

The threats are those of a forest-stream endemic in a developing landscape. Pollution from local gold mining degrades and clouds the very streams the species depends on; deforestation for agriculture and oil-palm plantations, together with logging, removes the canopy cover and riparian vegetation that define its habitat; and the possibility of dams adds a further pressure on its small drainage. Because the entire known world range of the fish is a single river basin with only a few occupied streams, any one of these pressures can affect a large fraction of the global population at once. For an aquarist, the species is a reminder that some of the most distinctive livebearers are also among the most geographically fragile, and that their survival rests on the integrity of a handful of small Indonesian rivers.
