Nomorhamphus towoetii is one of the "black halfbeaks" of central Sulawesi — a small, viviparous freshwater halfbeak from the cool highland streams that feed the Malili lake system in Indonesia. Despite a name and reputation tying it to Lake Towuti, the species appears to be a stream fish rather than a true lake-dweller, living in clear, well-oxygenated, distinctly cool running water in the hills above the lakes. Like all of its genus it is a livebearer: fertilisation is internal and the female delivers a small brood of fully formed young. It reaches the aquarium trade in modest numbers as a distinctive, dark-bodied oddball, and is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus towoetii was described by Werner Ladiges in 1972 and is placed in the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of the order Beloniformes — a lineage quite separate from the New World poeciliid livebearers despite a shared habit of giving birth to live young. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the genus Nomorhamphus unites a radiation of small viviparous halfbeaks centred on the freshwaters of Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia, where the group has diversified across the island's isolated lakes and stream systems.

The species belongs to a cluster of dark-bodied "black halfbeaks" from central Sulawesi that also includes Nomorhamphus celebensis and the more recently described Nomorhamphus aenigma (Huylebrouck et al., 2020) from the upper Cerekang River. These fishes are part of the same broad complex associated with the Malili lakes — Towuti, Mahalona and Matano. A hobby form carrying an orange zone in the dorsal fin is, by most current accounts, treated as a colour form of N. towoetii rather than a separate species, though the boundaries within this complex are not fully settled and material reaching aquarists is often imperfectly identified.

The genus name Nomorhamphus is built from Greek roots referring to a filament and to the bill or beak of these fishes, in keeping with the elongate lower-jaw "beak" that gives halfbeaks their name; the genus shows reduction and modification of that beak across its species. The specific epithet towoetii refers to Lake Towuti (older spelling "Towoeti"), the large Malili-system lake to which the species has traditionally been linked.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus towoetii is a small halfbeak. Reported maximum length is around 3 in SL, but in practice the sexes differ markedly: females reach roughly 3 in while males stay smaller, around 2–2.5 in. This makes it a more compact fish than the related N. celebensis. The body is slender and elongate in the halfbeak manner, and dark — the species runs to a deep, near-black colouration that is one of its defining features.

A useful field distinction from N. celebensis lies in the females: female N. towoetii can darken to nearly the same blackness as the males, whereas N. celebensis females remain grey. The dorsal fin is the site of the orange marking seen in the hobby colour form. As in other Nomorhamphus, the lower jaw is extended into the characteristic halfbeak projection, though the degree of beak development varies across the genus.

As an internally fertilising halfbeak, the male carries a modified anal-fin structure — the andropodium — that functions in sperm transfer, the zenarchopterid counterpart to the gonopodium of poeciliid livebearers. Combined with the size and colour differences between the sexes, this gives the species a clear sexual dimorphism, with the larger females and the smaller, structurally modified males readily told apart in good condition.

Habitat

Nomorhamphus towoetii is endemic to central Sulawesi, Indonesia, within the Malili lake system of Towuti, Mahalona and Matano. Although the literature has long described the species as native to Lake Towuti itself, hobby and trade observations indicate that it does not in fact live in the open lake but in the cool highland tributary streams and runoffs that feed the Malili lakes. This is an important correction: the ecology of the fish is that of a stream-dweller, not a lacustrine species.

The water it occupies is notably cool for a tropical fish. Reported stream temperatures rarely exceed about 72 °F, well below the roughly 81–82 °F surface temperature of the lakes themselves. The streams are clear, well-oxygenated and flowing, though the fish does not appear to depend on strong current. FishBase records the species as freshwater and pelagic, occupying the upper water layers in keeping with its surface-oriented feeding.

This restricted, highland-stream distribution within a single lake system makes N. towoetii a narrow-range Sulawesi endemic. The Malili system as a whole is an area of high aquatic endemism and of mounting environmental pressure, so the precise stream habitats this halfbeak relies on are both limited in extent and sensitive to change.

Feeding

The mouth shape of N. towoetii — the upturned, surface-oriented set typical of halfbeaks — points to a diet of insects falling onto or moving across the water surface. As a near-surface, pelagic fish in flowing highland streams, it is well placed to take terrestrial and emerging insects from the surface film, the classic feeding mode of stream halfbeaks. FishBase gives an estimated trophic level around 3.1, consistent with a small insectivorous predator.

In the aquarium the species adapts readily and takes flake food, but its natural inclination is best served by surface and floating foods. Small live and frozen items — insects and insect larvae, and other small invertebrates — suit its mouth and feeding behaviour, and floating foods that linger at the surface are taken more confidently than items that sink quickly.

Because the wild diet centres on surface insects, a varied offering that includes some live or frozen insect-type foods helps maintain condition and colour. As with many surface feeders, food should be presented where the fish naturally forages rather than expecting it to feed heavily from the bottom.

Mating

Nomorhamphus towoetii is an internally fertilising, viviparous halfbeak — reproduction does not involve external egg-laying. In the zenarchopterid halfbeaks the male transfers sperm using a modified anal fin, the andropodium, which is the functional analogue of the gonopodium of New World poeciliid livebearers though derived independently. Courtship and pairing therefore culminate in internal insemination rather than the spawning seen in egg-laying fishes.

The quarrelsome, territorial temperament historically attributed to the "black halfbeaks" bears on their mating behaviour, with males in particular described as combative. That reputation is not absolute, however: some wild imports have been observed to be strikingly peaceful and even to shoal, suggesting that aggression may vary with origin, conditions and stocking rather than being a fixed trait.

After insemination the female carries the developing young internally through gestation. Detailed, species-specific figures for gestation length, brood frequency and any sperm-storage or superfetation in N. towoetii are not well documented — FishBase carries no fecundity or brood data for the species — so the reproductive account here is drawn from its viviparous halfbeak biology rather than from precise published measurements for this fish.

Breeding

As a livebearer, the female N. towoetii gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Genus-level husbandry experience indicates that timing the move of a gravid female to a rearing or birthing tank is delicate: too late risks stillbirths, while too early stresses an active fish. Getting this window right is the practical crux of breeding the species in captivity.

The fry are markedly cannibalistic — among the strongest reasons to separate young from the parents, and indeed from each other where necessary — so successful rearing depends on isolating the brood and providing structure. Precise brood sizes for N. towoetii are not reliably recorded; like other small Nomorhamphus the broods are modest rather than the large clutches of a prolific poeciliid, in keeping with the larger, better-developed young that viviparous halfbeaks produce.

There are no solid published figures specific to this species for brood number, gestation period or any superfetation, so quantitative breeding claims should be treated as data-sparse. What is clear from hobby experience is the practical sequence: condition the adults on suitable surface foods, watch the female for advancing gravidity, separate her at the right moment, and then protect the cannibal-prone fry afterward.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus towoetii is an uncommon, specialist aquarium fish rather than a beginner's livebearer. The single most important husbandry point follows directly from its habitat: it is a cool-water stream fish, and it should be kept distinctly cooler than typical tropical community fish — its native streams rarely exceed about 72 °F, far below standard tropical tank temperatures. Clean, well-oxygenated water is essential; good filtration and regular water changes matter, while strong current is not required.

Temperament needs watching. The black halfbeaks have a long-standing reputation for being quarrelsome and territorial, yet some wild-collected groups have behaved peacefully and even shoaled, so outcomes vary. Sensible practice is to give the fish space, watch interactions, and be prepared to adjust stocking if males prove combative. As a surface-oriented fish it benefits from open upper-water swimming room and from foods presented at the surface.

This is a fish for keepers who can meet its cool-water, high-water-quality demands and accept that it reaches the trade only in modest numbers and is not always confidently identified. For those equipped to provide cool, clean, flowing-type conditions, it is a distinctive dark-bodied halfbeak; for a general community tank kept at ordinary tropical temperatures, it is a poor fit.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus towoetii is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), an assessment dated 29 June 2018. The listing reflects its restricted range as a Sulawesi endemic tied to a single lake-and-stream system, with a small and fragmented area of occupancy exposed to ongoing decline in habitat quality.

The Malili lakes and their tributaries face a familiar set of pressures: introduced invasive fishes, water pollution and broader habitat degradation. These same threats drive the elevated conservation concern for the species' congeners — N. celebensis is listed at high risk on paper, and N. megarrhamphus, a halfbeak endemic to Lake Towuti, is assessed as Near Threatened — so N. towoetii sits within a regionally stressed fauna rather than being an isolated case.

There is a genuine debate about how much aquarium collection contributes to the species' decline. Because the fish appears to live in highland streams rather than in the lakes where invasive species and food-fishing pressure are concentrated, at least one trade observer argues that hobby collection has no demonstrated negative impact. Either way, the responsible position is conservative: this is a narrow-range, Vulnerable endemic whose cool, clear stream habitats are limited and degradable, and it warrants careful sourcing and habitat-minded concern rather than casual treatment.
