Taxonomy & naming
Nomorhamphus weberi was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1897 and is treated by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as the valid name, the parentheses on the authority indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Nomorhamphus. It belongs to the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks, within the order Beloniformes — the group that also contains the needlefishes and flyingfishes. FishBase records it under SpecCode 6271.
The genus Nomorhamphus is distinguished within the halfbeaks by its short lower jaw: where the surface-skimming Dermogenys carry the long, beak-like extended lower jaw that gives "halfbeak" its name, Nomorhamphus species have a much reduced, near-normal lower jaw. The Zenarchopteridae as a whole are set apart from the egg-laying halfbeaks by their reproductive biology — they are internally fertilising and, in many genera including Nomorhamphus, viviparous, bearing live young.
The species epithet honours Max Wilhelm Carl Weber (1852–1937), the German-born Dutch physician and zoologist who directed the Zoological Museum in Amsterdam and led expeditions through the Indo-Australian archipelago. The genus name Nomorhamphus combines Greek roots referring to a filament or thread and to a beak or bill, a reference to the form of the jaw in the group.
Morphology
Nomorhamphus weberi is a small fish. FishBase records a maximum length of about 3 in SL, based on the material reported by Kottelat and colleagues in their 1993 survey of the freshwater fishes of western Indonesia and Sulawesi. As in halfbeaks generally, the body is slender and elongate, built for life in open water; the species is described as pelagic and is found in the upper part of the water column.
The fish carries the short lower jaw characteristic of Nomorhamphus rather than the long projecting beak of the related Dermogenys. As is typical of the livebearing halfbeaks, the species shows sexual size dimorphism, with females growing larger than males — a pattern consistent across Nomorhamphus and the wider Zenarchopteridae. Males are distinguished, as in other internally fertilising halfbeaks, by the modification of the anal fin into a copulatory structure used to transfer sperm.
Lake Matano's endemic fishes are noted by Sulawesi-biotope specialists for colour variation, and Nomorhamphus weberi is reported to show colour polymorphism. Beyond these broad points the detailed morphology of this particular species is sparsely documented in accessible sources, and finer features are best left to the primary taxonomic literature rather than guessed at.
Habitat
Nomorhamphus weberi is endemic to Lake Matano in South Sulawesi, Indonesia — it is recorded from nowhere else. Lake Matano is an ancient, deep, tectonic lake, the uppermost and oldest of the interconnected Malili Lakes, a system renowned among biologists for its high level of endemism across fishes, snails, shrimps and crabs. Such ancient lakes act as evolutionary islands, and Matano's isolated waters have produced a distinctive fauna found in no other body of water on the planet.
The species lives in fresh water and is described as pelagic, occupying the open upper layers rather than the bottom. As a tropical Sulawesi lake fish it inhabits warm, stable water year-round; the precise temperature, pH and depth envelope it occupies within Matano is not well documented in the accessible literature, so it is recorded here only in broad terms rather than with false precision.
The restricted, single-lake range is the central fact of this fish's ecology and the reason it matters for conservation: a species confined to one ancient lake is wholly dependent on the condition of that one body of water, and any degradation of Matano's habitat translates directly into pressure on the species.

Anyone encountering the name in the trade should treat an identification with caution, since several Nomorhamphus circulate under confused or interchanged labels.
Where livebearing halfbeaks of the genus are kept by specialists, they are regarded as delicate oddball livebearers: surface-oriented, easily startled, and sensitive to water quality and to physical disturbance, which can damage the jaw and the fish's confidence. They favour calm, well-maintained water and quiet, open swimming space near the surface. None of this, however, is a care record for Nomorhamphus weberi itself, which has effectively no established husbandry literature.
The honest framing for this species is therefore conservation rather than aquarium keeping. It is best appreciated as a wild component of Lake Matano's endemic community — a fish to understand and protect in place, not a candidate for the home aquarium.

The core of the concern is the species' confinement to Lake Matano alone. A fish restricted to one ancient lake has no refuge elsewhere, so the species' fate is tied directly to the condition of that water body. The Malili Lakes face pressures common to the region — among them changes in water quality and the disruptive effects of introduced fishes on the native, highly endemic fauna — and any such degradation falls disproportionately on narrow endemics like this one.
For an aquarist the right response is recognition rather than acquisition: Nomorhamphus weberi is not a fish to source for a tank but an example of how much unique freshwater life is concentrated in, and dependent on, a single Sulawesi lake. Its Near Threatened listing is a reminder that the conservation story for many endemic livebearers is written at the scale of one body of water.
