Taxonomy & naming
Phalloceros uai was described by Paulo H. F. Lucinda in 2008 as part of a sweeping revision of the genus Phalloceros (Neotropical Ichthyology 6(2):113–158), a paper that resurrected the genus from near-monotypy and erected twenty-one new species. Before that work, most spotted Phalloceros across south-eastern and southern Brazil were lumped under the single name Phalloceros caudimaculatus, the "dusky millions fish." Lucinda's revision split that catch-all into a suite of geographically and morphologically distinct species, and P. uai is the form occupying the upper Rio São Francisco drainage in Minas Gerais. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros uai Lucinda, 2008 as the valid name within the genus Phalloceros, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae.
The genus name combines the Greek phallos (penis) and keras (horn), a reference to the prominent gonopodium that characterises the males of these livebearers. The specific epithet uai is not a Latinised descriptor at all but a homage: "uai" is a characteristic interjection of the people of Minas Gerais, the Brazilian state where the author was born and where the species occurs. The choice gives the fish one of the more charming etymologies in the family — a name that is at once a place, a dialect word, and a personal tribute.
Within the revised genus, P. uai is diagnosed by a combination of features rather than any single unique trait, in keeping with the close similarity among Phalloceros species. Diagnostic characters noted in the original description include a lateral spot that becomes wide and square-shaped in large specimens, a female urogenital papilla curved to the right and positioned laterally, and an asymmetrical gonopodial structure — the absence of the right gonopodial hook with the left hook present, and a gonopodial appendix whose right half is wider than the left.
Morphology
Phalloceros uai is a very small poeciliid showing the strong sexual size dimorphism typical of the genus. Males are diminutive, reaching only about 0.5 in in standard length, while females grow to roughly twice that — about 1.5 in SL — and are correspondingly deeper-bodied. The body is the slim, slightly compressed shape common to small livebearers, built for life in shallow vegetated water. Meristic counts from the original description give 8 dorsal soft rays, 9–10 anal soft rays, and 32–33 vertebrae.
The most recognisable marking, and the basis of the English common name "one spot toothcarp," is the single dark lateral spot on the flank. In small individuals this spot is rounded, but in large specimens it broadens and becomes distinctly square-shaped — a feature Lucinda used to help separate P. uai from its congeners. As in all Phalloceros, colour is otherwise muted: a plain silvery to olive ground with the dark spot as the dominant feature, without the bright pigmentation of guppies or Endlers.
The sexes are also distinguished by their reproductive anatomy. Males carry a gonopodium — the rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that defines male poeciliids — and in P. uai this structure is notably asymmetrical, lacking the right hook while bearing the left, with an appendix wider on its right half. Females bear a urogenital papilla that curves to the right and sits laterally. These small, side-biased details of the genitalia are central to telling the closely similar Phalloceros species apart.
Habitat
Phalloceros uai is endemic to Brazil, specifically to the upper portion of the Rio São Francisco basin in the state of Minas Gerais, with the Rio das Velhas drainage forming the core of its known range. The Rio das Velhas is a major right-bank tributary of the upper São Francisco, draining the highlands around Belo Horizonte, and it is from this system that the type material originates. The species' distribution thus lies entirely within the interior uplands of south-eastern Brazil rather than the coastal drainages occupied by some of its congeners.
FishBase classifies the species as a tropical, freshwater, benthopelagic fish — one that lives in the water column close to the bottom. Like other small Phalloceros, it is an inhabitant of shallow, slow-moving and still waters: stream margins, marshy edges, ditches and vegetated pools, where dense plant growth offers cover and a steady supply of small food items. Specific water-chemistry measurements for P. uai are not well documented in the literature, so precise temperature and pH preferences for this species are data sparse and are best inferred cautiously from the genus's general tolerance of warm to mildly subtropical conditions.
The IUCN assessment characterises the species as widespread within the São Francisco basin and frequently collected, indicating it is a common component of its native fish community rather than a narrow-range rarity. That said, its overall range is geographically restricted to one drainage system in one Brazilian state, which makes it endemic in the strict sense even while being locally abundant.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Phalloceros uai appears in the accessible literature, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its body form, its trophic position, and the well-known habits of its genus. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.0, consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mix of plant and animal matter rather than a strict herbivore or a dedicated predator.
Small Phalloceros in the wild graze on algae and biofilm, organic detritus, and the abundant micro-invertebrates of vegetated shallow water — tiny crustaceans, insect larvae including mosquito larvae, and other small drifting or substrate-bound items. This opportunistic, generalist feeding is part of what makes the genus successful in marginal and disturbed habitats, where a flexible diet is an advantage.
There is no published captive-feeding regimen specific to this species. By analogy with other small livebearers it would be expected to accept fine prepared foods alongside small live and frozen items and a share of algal matter, but in keeping with the project's rules this is offered as a reasonable inference from the genus rather than a verified fact for P. uai itself.
Mating
Phalloceros uai is a viviparous poeciliid, which means fertilisation is internal. As in all members of the family, the male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ built from modified rays of the anal fin. In P. uai this organ is distinctly asymmetrical, bearing a left gonopodial hook but lacking the right, with an appendix wider on its right side; this lateral bias in the male genitalia is mirrored by a female urogenital papilla that curves to the right and sits to one side. Such handedness in poeciliid genitalia is functionally linked to the side from which the male approaches and inseminates the female.
Beyond these anatomical facts, the specific mating behaviour of P. uai has not been documented in detail. In poeciliids generally, males pursue females persistently and attempt insemination through a mixture of brief displays and sneak copulation, and females are often able to store sperm internally to fertilise successive broods from a single mating. Whether and to what degree these patterns hold for P. uai specifically is not established in the literature, so the finer points of its courtship are data sparse.
What is clear is that the pronounced size gap between the tiny males and the much larger females — males around half the female's length — is the same arrangement seen across small livebearers, where compact, manoeuvrable males contend for access to the larger, fecundity-driven females. The asymmetric gonopodium is the species-level signature of how that internal-fertilisation system is realised in Phalloceros uai.
Breeding
As a livebearer, Phalloceros uai does not lay eggs: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young. This viviparous mode is the defining reproductive feature of the Poeciliidae and is recorded for the genus, but FishBase and the available sources give no species-specific figures for brood size, gestation length, or the frequency of broods in P. uai. Those quantitative details are genuinely data sparse for this species and are not invented here.
Superfetation — the ability of a female to carry two or more broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — occurs in some poeciliid lineages, but it is not documented for Phalloceros uai, and there is no basis in the cache or the literature for asserting it in this species. The safe statement is simply that P. uai reproduces by internal fertilisation and live birth, in line with its family, while the specifics of its reproductive output remain unrecorded.
The species' high resilience noted in FishBase — a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months — implies the rapid, continuous reproduction characteristic of small livebearers, consistent with a fish that breeds readily and recovers quickly. But the precise mechanics of how many fry a female of P. uai produces, and how often, await a dedicated reproductive study.
In the aquarium
Phalloceros uai is essentially absent from the ornamental aquarium trade. It is a recently described, range-restricted Brazilian endemic known mainly from scientific collections, and no dedicated hobbyist care or breeding account for the species could be located. Aquarists encountering Phalloceros at all are far more likely to meet the widespread P. caudimaculatus, the "dusky millions fish," which has a long history in the hobby.
For that reason, any husbandry guidance for P. uai is genus-level inference rather than verified species practice. Small Phalloceros are generally regarded as hardy, undemanding livebearers that tolerate a range of conditions and, in the case of southern congeners, cooler subtropical temperatures than tropical livebearers prefer. A well-planted tank with gentle flow, cover for fry, and a varied small-particle diet would suit a fish of this size and habit. None of this, however, is documented specifically for P. uai, and the honest position is that its captive requirements are unestablished.
Given that it is a wild-type, single-spotted, plainly coloured small fish of scientific rather than commercial interest, P. uai is best thought of as a species of taxonomic and biogeographic significance — a product of Lucinda's revision of a confusing genus — rather than an aquarium subject. Aquarists interested in the genus are better served, and better informed, by the long-kept P. caudimaculatus.
Conservation
Phalloceros uai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022, and it covers the species' global range. The rationale notes that the species is widespread within the Rio São Francisco basin and frequently collected, and that it is not considered to be particularly threatened.
The species is endemic to the upper São Francisco drainage in Minas Gerais, principally the Rio das Velhas system. While that gives it a geographically limited range, its local abundance and broad occurrence within that basin underpin the Least Concern listing. As a small, adaptable livebearer of vegetated shallow waters, it is the kind of fish that tends to persist in a variety of habitat conditions.
No species-specific threats are highlighted in the assessment, though the upper São Francisco basin as a whole faces the general pressures of an industrialised and densely settled region — urban and agricultural runoff, water abstraction, and habitat modification around the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area through which the Rio das Velhas flows. For now the species' status is secure, and the conservation note is less about imminent risk than about a common endemic whose fortunes are tied to the health of a single, heavily used river basin.
