A small, stone-hugging neoplecostomine endemic to a single tributary of the upper Rio das Velhas, Pareiorhaphis mutuca is one of the rarest loricariids in Brazil — and one of the few genuinely Endangered plecos on the IUCN Red List. Its entire known range lies within the Belo Horizonte metropolitan watershed, where decades of deforestation and urban-industrial pollution have hammered the fast-flowing Atlantic-slope headwaters it depends upon.

Taxonomy & naming

Pareiorhaphis mutuca was originally described by Cláudio Oliveira and Osvaldo Takeshi Oyakawa in 1999 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 10, number 1, pages 75–76, figures 1–2), from material collected in Córrego Mutuca — a small right-bank tributary draining toward the Rio das Velhas near Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The holotype is catalogued at the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP 37148). At description the species was placed in Hemipsilichthys; Edson Pereira's 2005 revision of the group transferred it to the resurrected genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918, where the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) currently recognises it.

Pareiorhaphis is a diverse genus of small rheophilic loricariids distributed across Atlantic-slope drainages of southeastern Brazil, with greatest species richness in the Paraná–Uruguai and coastal Rio Grande do Sul systems. The genus belongs to subfamily Neoplecostominae — a grouping of largely armoured, benthic, current-adapted plecos endemic to Brazilian coastal rivers. No L-number or LDA-number has been assigned to P. mutuca, and the species has never appeared in the ornamental trade to any documented degree.

The species epithet mutuca is a straightforward toponym derived from Córrego Mutuca, the type locality stream. No additional common names are in established use.

Morphology

Pareiorhaphis mutuca reaches approximately 4 in standard length (SL), making it one of the larger members of its genus. Like all Pareiorhaphis, it is a fully armoured loricariid: the dorsal surface is tiled with keeled bony scutes forming a continuous shield from the head to the base of the caudal fin. Ground coloration is cryptic — typically dark brown to olive on the dorsal surface with paler, slightly mottled ventral plating — which serves as effective camouflage against the mossy, algae-coated cobble and bedrock substrates it inhabits.

The ventral mouth is adapted for rasping periphyton from hard substrates in fast current; the lips are fleshy and papillose, forming a suction disc capable of anchoring the fish to smooth rock faces even in turbulent flow. The pectoral fins are large and stiff, with robust spine bases that help the fish press flat against the substrate.

Sexual dimorphism in Pareiorhaphis follows the pattern common to the genus: breeding males develop conspicuous odontodes — elongated, spine-like projections — along the snout, cheeks (interopercular region), and the leading edges of the pectoral fin spines. These structures are absent or greatly reduced in females, making sexing of mature adults relatively straightforward when the fish are in breeding condition. Females are typically stouter-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

The type locality, Córrego Mutuca, lies at approximately 20°00′S, 43°55′W near kilometer 20 of the road from Belo Horizonte to Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. This small stream drains into the upper Rio das Velhas, which is itself the largest tributary of the upper São Francisco River — a major Atlantic-slope system wholly within Brazil.

Córrego Mutuca is a high-gradient headwater stream of the type characteristic of the southern Espinhaço Range foothills: rocky substrates, clear to lightly turbid water, strong seasonal flow variation, and dense riparian gallery forest where intact. FishBase notes that P. mutuca hides under stones in deep shaded places and is described as active. The species is characterised as demersal and facultative air-breathing — the latter capability found in several neoplecostomines that occupy streams prone to deoxygenation during the dry season when flow drops dramatically.

No detailed field measurements of water chemistry at the type locality have been published for this species. The broader upper São Francisco highlands typically feature warm, moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral freshwaters during the wet season, with temperatures rising and dissolved oxygen declining during the long dry season.

Feeding

Pareiorhaphis mutuca is a periphyton scraper and benthic grazer in the manner of most neoplecostomines. Its papillose lips and flattened oral disc are adapted for rasping the thin biofilm — algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, detritus, and associated invertebrates — that coats rock and cobble surfaces in rheophilic habitats. The species does not appear to be a wood-feeder in the manner of panaquine loricariids; in the absence of abundant driftwood in its rocky, fast-flowing native streams, hard-substrate biofilm grazing is the primary feeding mode.

No specific field dietary analyses have been published for P. mutuca. Diet inferences are based on gut morphology consistent with the wider Neoplecostominae and on the microhabitat type — the fine periphyton-rich epilithic film of fast, clear highland streams. Invertebrate detritus swept into crevices likely forms an opportunistic supplement.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in P. mutuca has not been documented in either the field or in captivity in any published account. General patterns inferred from related neoplecostomines and the broader Loricariidae suggest that males become territorial around sheltered crevice sites — wedges between cobbles or undercut bedrock ledges — where eggs are eventually deposited.

The pronounced odontode development on the snout and pectoral spines of male Pareiorhaphis is widely interpreted as both an intrasexual combat weapon and a secondary sexual signal; males with more elaborate odontodes may have a competitive advantage in securing spawning sites and attracting females. The degree of male competition is unknown for this species but is likely intense given the small headwater streams it inhabits, where suitable breeding shelter is scarce.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Pareiorhaphis mutuca have been published in hobbyist or scientific literature. Given the species' rarity, restricted distribution, and Endangered conservation status, deliberate captive reproduction efforts have apparently not been attempted at any documented aquarium or breeding facility.

Based on the reproductive biology of related Pareiorhaphis species and other neoplecostomines, the species is expected to be a substrate-spawner: eggs deposited in a sheltered cavity (rock crevice, undercut ledge) with some degree of paternal guarding of the clutch. Clutch size and incubation duration are unknown. The combination of Endangered status and complete absence of established captive populations means that any serious captive propagation programme would require proper collection permits from Brazilian authorities (IBAMA/ICMBIO) and would represent a genuine conservation contribution.

In the aquarium

Pareiorhaphis mutuca does not appear in the ornamental fish trade to any meaningful extent and is not kept in the hobby. No care guides, aquarium observations, or husbandry reports exist for this species.

For completeness: the general husbandry framework appropriate for a small, fast-water neoplecostomine would involve a well-oxygenated aquarium with strong circulation, a rocky substrate of rounded cobble and smooth slate, cool to warm temperatures reflecting the highland climate of the type locality, and a diet based on spirulina wafers, algae tabs, and blanched vegetables. The complete absence of trade specimens and any captive experience means this guidance is extrapolated from the family rather than observed for this species specifically.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhaphis mutuca as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv) in November 2018. The assessment reflects the species' extremely limited extent of occurrence — effectively a single small stream system, Córrego Mutuca, in the upper Rio das Velhas drainage — combined with continuing decline across all four sub-criteria: extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, quality of habitat, and number of locations.

The threat context is stark. The Belo Horizonte metropolitan region is one of the most heavily urbanised areas in Minas Gerais, and the Rio das Velhas has historically been one of the most polluted rivers in Brazil due to industrial, mining (iron ore and gold), and domestic sewage inputs. Although some remediation efforts have been ongoing, the headwater streams that feed the system — including the type locality Córrego Mutuca itself — remain under pressure from deforestation, riparian clearance, road construction (the species type locality sits adjacent to a state highway), agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater. Loss of the shading gallery forest along small streams elevates water temperature and reduces the cool, oxygenated microhabitat this benthic, rheophilic species requires.

With an effective range measuring a few kilometres of stream, a single severe pollution event, dam installation, or water diversion could constitute a functionally terminal event for the species. P. mutuca has never been recorded from captivity, and no ex situ insurance population is known to exist. Its Endangered status deserves to be taken seriously.
