Poecilia gillii is a Central American molly that lives most of its life as a quiet grazer of detritus and algae, browsing the substratum of swamps, brooks and the shallow margins of large rivers from Guatemala south to Panama. Named for the nineteenth-century Smithsonian ichthyologist Theodore Gill, it is a robust, tolerant livebearer — at home in fresh and brackish water alike, and across the full sweep of current velocities from slack pools to flowing river edges. Though seldom seen in the aquarium trade, it is a textbook member of the New World livebearers: internally fertilised, bearing live young, with the larger, plainer females and smaller males of the family's signature sexual dimorphism.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia gillii was described by the Austrian zoologist Rudolf Kner in 1863, and the parenthetical authority — (Kner, 1863) — records that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved to Poecilia, where Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as the valid name today. The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the order Cyprinodontiformes, the toothcarps. It carries the FishBase SpecCode 49039.

The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" or "variegated," a reference to the patterning of these fishes. The specific epithet gillii is an eponym honouring Theodore Nicholas Gill (1837–1914), the American ichthyologist associated with the Smithsonian Institution and George Washington University. Within the genus, P. gillii belongs to the mollies — the same lineage as the familiar sailfin and short-finned mollies — rather than the guppy line. A phylogenetic treatment of the tribe Poeciliini by Rodríguez (1997, Copeia) is the principal systematic reference cited for the species.

Morphology

Poecilia gillii is a moderately sized molly with pronounced sexual size dimorphism, a hallmark of the livebearing poeciliids. Females are the larger sex, reaching about 4 in in total length, while males attain roughly 2.5 in — a near two-to-one difference that is typical of the family, where the female's body must accommodate developing broods. The body is the deep, laterally compressed molly form, built for browsing close to the substrate rather than for sustained open-water swimming.

As in all poeciliids, the most diagnostic external feature is sex-specific: mature males carry a gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from the modified anterior rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female. Females lack this structure and instead show the deeper, fuller-bodied profile of a livebearer, often with a darkened gravid region when carrying young. Detailed published colour and meristic descriptions for P. gillii are sparse in the consulted sources, and the species is best characterised by its molly body plan and the consistent size difference between the sexes rather than by any striking ornamentation.

Habitat

Poecilia gillii is a Central and northern South American fish of the Atlantic slope. Its range runs along the Atlantic drainage from Guatemala southward to the Río Térraba in Costa Rica, and across Panama from the Río Grande in Coclé Province to the Río Bayano. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic species that browses near the substratum, but it is notably euryhaline — very large individuals turn up in brackish water, while smaller fish are found upstream in brooks reaching elevations as high as about 1,220 metres.

The species is a habitat generalist. It occupies swamps, brooks and the shallow waters along the edges of large rivers, and is recorded across waters of all current velocities, though it is more abundant in slack-water reaches than in fast flow. Reported water conditions are warm and on the hard, alkaline side: temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F, pH around 7.2–7.8, and hardness in the range of about 10–30 dH. This breadth of tolerance — across salinity, elevation, flow and water chemistry — marks P. gillii as an adaptable, resilient fish well suited to the variable lowland and foothill waters of its range.

Feeding

In the wild Poecilia gillii feeds low on the food web, browsing the substratum for detritus, organic ooze and filamentous algae. Its trophic level of roughly 2.5 places it as a detritivore with a strong herbivorous leaning — a grazer rather than a hunter — which fits its habit of working close to the bottom in shallow, vegetated and silt-rich waters.

No dedicated aquarium feeding study for the species was located in the consulted sources, so its captive diet is inferred from this wild ecology and from general molly husbandry. As an algae-and-detritus grazer it would be expected to take a varied omnivore's menu in captivity: quality flake and micro-pellets with a substantial vegetable or algal component, supplemented by small live and frozen foods. As with mollies generally, a diet weighted toward plant and algal matter suits its natural feeding mode better than a heavily carnivorous one.

Mating

Poecilia gillii reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the poeciliids. The male uses his gonopodium — the modified anal fin — to transfer sperm directly to the female, dispensing with external spawning entirely. As in other mollies, males pursue and court females rather than defending territories or tending a nest, and the much smaller male size relative to the female is itself a product of this mating system.

Species-specific courtship behaviour for P. gillii is not documented in the consulted sources, so its details are best understood by reference to the broader molly pattern: persistent male pursuit, display, and repeated mating attempts, with females exercising a degree of choice. Female poeciliids can also store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating — a trait general to the family that there is no reason to doubt for this species, though it has not been specifically quantified for it.

Breeding

Poecilia gillii is viviparous — a true livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Like other Poecilia mollies it is lecithotrophic: the developing embryos are nourished by yolk provisioned in the egg, not through a placenta-like connection to the mother. The species is therefore not matrotrophic, and superfetation — the carrying of multiple broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — is not reported in Poecilia; that phenomenon belongs to other poeciliid genera such as Poeciliopsis and Heterandria, not to the mollies.

The species reproduces throughout the year, with a recorded peak in juvenile abundance in August, indicating a seasonal pulse layered over continuous breeding. Precise gestation length and brood size for P. gillii are not documented in the consulted sources and should be treated as data sparse; for mollies in general, gestation runs on the order of three to four weeks. After the fry are released there is no further parental care, and as in livebearers generally the newborns are fully formed and able to swim and feed at once — meaning, in captivity, that they need cover from predation by the adults.

In the aquarium

Poecilia gillii is an uncommon aquarium subject, and no dedicated hobby care or breeding profile for it was located in the consulted sources; the guidance here is therefore extrapolated from its wild ecology and from standard molly husbandry rather than drawn from species-specific keeping experience. Treated as a molly, it would call for hard, alkaline water and warm tropical temperatures in the 75–82 °F band, conditions that match the pH 7.2–7.8 and 10–30 dH reported from its natural range.

Its wild feeding on detritus and filamentous algae points to an omnivorous, algae-leaning diet in captivity, and its documented tolerance of brackish conditions means it would likely accept and even appreciate a little added salinity, as many mollies do. Given the substantial adult size of females — to around 4 in — and the species' preference for slack, shallow waters, a generously sized, well-planted aquarium with gentle flow would best reflect its habitat. As a livebearer it breeds readily, so population management, and providing cover for fry away from hungry adults, are the practical husbandry concerns rather than any difficulty in spawning it.

Conservation

Poecilia gillii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 18 December 2019 (IUCN Red List Version 2025-2, global assessment). A Data Deficient listing means there is insufficient information on the species' distribution, population status or threats to make a reliable judgement of its extinction risk — it is a statement about the gaps in knowledge, not a finding that the species is either secure or imperiled.

What is known of the species' ecology suggests a fish that is, at least locally, resilient: FishBase records a medium resilience with an estimated population doubling time of roughly 1.4–4.4 years, a low vulnerability to fishing (around 10 on a 100-point scale), and no harm to humans. The species is broadly distributed across Central American Atlantic drainages and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, which would tend to buffer it against localised pressures. It is not listed under CITES or CMS. The Data Deficient status nonetheless flags a real need for better field data on its populations and any threats before its conservation standing can be firmly established.
