Poecilia marcellinoi is a small, plainly dressed short-finned molly of the Central American highlands and lowlands, described from El Salvador in 1995 and named for the marine ecologist Marcellino J. C. Rozemeijer. One of four species in the Poecilia sphenops complex, it ranges across the Atlantic and Pacific drainages of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, from montane streams and lakes down to tidally influenced coastal lagoons. It is not an aquarium-trade fish — known to science chiefly through the original revision and a single IUCN assessment — and the Red List rates it Data Deficient less out of genuine rarity than out of lingering taxonomic uncertainty within the molly group.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia marcellinoi was described by Fred N. Poeser in 1995 in a paper that disentangled it from its near-twin, Poecilia salvatoris Regan, 1907, on the basis of nonrandom morphological variation in El Salvadoran populations (Poeser, F. N. 1995, "Nonrandom variation in Poecilia marcellinoi n. sp. and P. salvatoris Regan, 1907 in El Salvador," Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde 64(4):239–252). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid and places the species in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, subfamily Poeciliinae. FishBase records it under SpecCode 53652, in the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The species is one of four recognised members of the Poecilia sphenops species complex (Bagley et al., 2015), the group of short-finned mollies whose members are notoriously hard to separate on external characters alone. This complex membership is the main reason its conservation status remains unsettled: the boundaries between marcellinoi and its congeners — especially P. salvatoris — are subtle, and a Marcellino molly in the hand is not always easy to tell from its relatives without locality data and careful counts. A subsequent revision of the group's relationships appears in Meyer & Radda (2000), which FishBase cites as its main taxonomic reference.

The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured" or "varied," a reference to the variegated colour of these fishes generally rather than to this rather plain species in particular. The species epithet marcellinoi honours Marcellino J. C. Rozemeijer, a marine ecologist at Wageningen University. The Spanish-language common name recorded by the IUCN is "Olomina," a generic Central American term applied to small native livebearers; FishBase lists the English book-name "Marcellino toothcarp."

Morphology

Poecilia marcellinoi is a small short-finned molly. The largest recorded specimen is about 2.5 in in standard length (Lucinda, 2003), so total length runs somewhat above that; like other mollies of the sphenops complex it is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish with a rounded caudal fin and an upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. FishBase carries only a line drawing rather than a photograph, and the species is not figured in the colour aquarium literature, so descriptions of live colour are sparse.

In keeping with the short-finned mollies, the species lacks the enlarged dorsal of the sailfin group and is generally silvery to olive-grey, without the bright spotting that makes guppies so distinctive. Poeser's original work separated marcellinoi from P. salvatoris on patterns of variation in meristic and morphometric characters rather than on any single eye-catching feature, which is precisely why the two are so easily confused in the field.

As in all poeciliids the species is sexually dimorphic. Males bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — used to transfer sperm internally, and are typically smaller and slimmer than females; females are larger and deeper-bodied, developing a distended, often darkened abdomen when gravid. Beyond this general livebearer pattern, detailed sex-specific colour or finnage notes for marcellinoi are not well documented (data sparse).

Habitat

Poecilia marcellinoi is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical Central America. The IUCN assessment gives it a wide native range across both the Atlantic and Pacific versants — El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — spanning the Lempa, Sonsonate and Mandinga–Comalapa drainages in El Salvador, the Motagua and Ulúa systems on the Honduran Atlantic slope, and the Choluteca and Lempa on the Pacific side (McMahan et al., 2013). Its extent of occurrence is estimated at roughly 60,0 mi², across more than ten locations. FishBase, by contrast, gives a narrower type-region distribution centred on the Lake Ilopango basin of El Salvador.

The species occupies an unusually broad altitudinal and habitat span for a small molly: montane streams, rivers and lakes at higher elevations down to lower-elevation rivers and tidally influenced lagoons near the coast (Poeser, 1995). It is found in permanent rivers and streams, in freshwater lakes larger than about eight hectares, and in marshes and pools, and it tolerates a degree of brackish influence in coastal lagoon settings. A regional study of El Salvadoran cyprinodontiforms notes that the native mollies tend to favour comparatively little-disturbed rivers and small streams, occurring over rocky substrates in upper-basin reaches (Lyons et al., 2021).

The fish can be locally common. Poeser (1995) recorded it as dominant at Laguna Verde and moderately abundant at Lake Ilopango, and later survey work found it making up around 11 percent of the fish community in the Río Acahuapa (Álvarez et al., 2017). It also occurs within several protected areas, including Celaque and Cerro Azul Meámbar National Parks and the Opalaca Biosphere Reserve in Honduras and Cerro Verde National Park in El Salvador.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Poecilia marcellinoi has been published, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its body plan and from its short-finned molly relatives. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.6, the value expected of a small omnivore that leans toward plant and detrital matter rather than active predation.

Mollies of the sphenops complex are generalist omnivores and aufwuchs grazers: they rasp algae and biofilm from rocks and submerged surfaces, take detritus, and pick small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other drifting items from the water column and surface film. In the rocky upper-basin reaches the species favours, a substantial part of the diet is likely periphyton scraped from stone, supplemented by whatever small animal prey is available.

Because the species is not kept in the aquarium trade, there is no captive feeding record to draw on. By analogy with congeneric mollies it would be expected to accept a varied omnivorous diet with a meaningful vegetable or algal component, but this is inference rather than documented husbandry (data sparse).

Mating

Like all members of the subfamily Poeciliinae, Poecilia marcellinoi reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the rod-like organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that is the defining reproductive structure of the New World livebearers. Courtship in short-finned mollies generally combines display toward the female with persistent following and sneak insemination attempts, though the specific courtship behaviour of marcellinoi has not been separately described.

As in other Poecilia, females are able to store sperm internally and can therefore produce a succession of broods from a single mating, decoupling the act of mating from each birth. This sperm-storage capacity, together with the species' tolerance of varied habitats, helps explain how small populations can persist and rebound — FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated population-doubling time of under fifteen months.

Sexual selection in this species has not been studied directly. The plain coloration of the short-finned mollies means mate choice is unlikely to be driven by the kind of vivid colour signalling seen in guppies; behavioural and morphological cues probably dominate. Specifics of marcellinoi mate choice remain undocumented (data sparse).

Breeding

Poecilia marcellinoi is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. As in Poecilia generally, the embryos are lecithotrophic — nourished by yolk laid down in the egg rather than by a true placenta — so the female provisions her brood up front. Superfetation, the simultaneous carriage of broods at different developmental stages, is not characteristic of the sphenops-group mollies and is not expected here.

No brood-size or gestation data have been published for marcellinoi specifically. By analogy with short-finned molly congeners such as P. sphenops and P. salvatoris, gestation is on the order of three to five weeks and broods number on the order of a few dozen fry, with multiple broods produced through a season as stored sperm fertilises successive batches of eggs. These figures are offered as congeneric inference, not measured values for this species.

The newborn fry of mollies are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately, and receive no parental care — adult poeciliids, including the mother, will eat fry given the chance, so in the wild juvenile survival depends on cover such as marginal vegetation and shallow refuges. The species' high reproductive resilience suggests effective recruitment where suitable habitat persists.

In the aquarium

Poecilia marcellinoi is not an aquarium fish. The IUCN assessment records that it is not used in the ornamental trade, and it has no presence in the hobby literature; there are no established husbandry accounts, strain names or breeding reports for it. Anyone encountering the species would do so in the field in Central America, not in a fish shop.

If it were ever maintained, its requirements would presumably resemble those of other hardy short-finned mollies from the same region: warm, well-oxygenated water, a tolerance of moderately hard and alkaline conditions, and some structure or rockwork reflecting the rocky upper-basin habitats it favours. Its natural occurrence in tidally influenced lagoons suggests, as with many mollies, a tolerance of slightly brackish water. All of this, however, is extrapolation from relatives rather than documented practice.

The honest position is that captive care of this species is unrecorded (data sparse), and that it belongs to the atlas as a wild Central American native rather than as a hobby subject. Its interest lies in its place in the molly radiation and in the conservation questions raised by its uncertain taxonomy.

Conservation

Poecilia marcellinoi is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 12 August 2019 and published in 2020 (Lyons, T. J. & Barraza, E. 2020, e.T164691460A164691591). The assessment is explicit that the Data Deficient rating reflects unresolved taxonomy within the Poecilia sphenops complex rather than evidence of genuine rarity: where the species can be identified it is often locally common, and its population trend is judged stable or only slowly declining, with the total likely exceeding ten thousand mature individuals.

The species occupies a large range — an extent of occurrence near 60,0 mi² across El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras — and occurs in numerous protected areas, including Celaque, Cerro Azul Meámbar and Cerro Verde National Parks and the Opalaca Biosphere Reserve. The assessors note that, like many Poecilia, it is relatively tolerant of habitat disturbance, which buffers it against the pressures facing more specialised fishes in the same waters.

The threats identified are the broad ones affecting Central American freshwaters generally: land-use change and deforestation for plantation agriculture, sedimentation and heavy-metal pollution from mining and quarrying (a particular concern in Guatemala), and agricultural, industrial and domestic effluents. The species is not targeted by fisheries or the ornamental trade, though it is taken locally as bait and occasionally eaten in El Salvador. Resolving the taxonomy of the sphenops complex is the key step toward a more confident conservation assessment.
