Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia maylandi Meyer, 1983 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and the subfamily Poeciliinae. It belongs to the short-finned molly assemblage of Poecilia, the group of stocky, algae-grazing mollies of Mexico and Central America rather than the slender guppies of South America.
The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" or "variegated," a reference to the variable colouration found across these fishes. The specific epithet maylandi is a patronym honouring Hans-Joachim Mayland (1928–2004), a German ichthyologist, aquarist, photographer and prolific aquarium writer. The fish carries the English common name Balsas molly, after the Río Balsas system to which it is endemic; the Spanish name recorded in the literature is topote del Balsas.
The genus Poecilia is large and its internal arrangement has been repeatedly revised.
