Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia petenensis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1866. It sits in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails — and within Poecilia it belongs to the molly lineage, historically treated as the subgenus Mollienesia, the group of larger, often sailfin-finned grazers. FishBase records it as a sailfin-type molly of this subgenus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name on this site, and the species circulates under the combination Poecilia petenensis.
The taxonomy of the Central American mollies has been repeatedly revised, and the petenensis name has been entangled with that of a close congener. Poecilia kykesis (the Usumacinta or Petén molly) ranges from Guatemala's Río Usumacinta tributaries and nearby Petén lakes north to the Yucatán of Mexico, and the two forms are easily confused; Guatemalan records of "petenensis" from outside Lake Petén Itzá may in fact refer to kykesis. Robert Rush Miller's 1983 checklist and key to the mollies of Mexico (Copeia 1983(3):817–822) remains the principal reference untangling the subgenus Mollienesia in this region, and it underpins how the petenensis–kykesis pair is treated today.
The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" or "varied," a reference to the variegated patterning typical of these fishes. The species epithet petenensis is a toponym, marking the Petén region of Guatemala from which the species was described and to which the modern IUCN assessment restricts it.
Morphology
The Peten molly is a moderately sized livebearer with pronounced sexual size dimorphism. FishBase gives a maximum total length of about 3 in for males and roughly 4.5 in for females, making females substantially the larger sex — a pattern common across the molly group, where females are deeper-bodied and heavier while males stay smaller and slimmer. The published length–weight relationship (a ≈ 0.00851, b ≈ 3.15) is consistent with the stocky, laterally compressed build of a sailfin-type Poecilia.
As a member of the subgenus Mollienesia, the species is a sailfin-type molly, the group in which males develop an enlarged dorsal fin used in display; the degree of fin enlargement in petenensis specifically is not well documented in the consulted sources. The defining sexual character, as in all poeciliids, is the male gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm to the female internally. Detailed pigmentation and meristic descriptions for this particular species are sparse in readily available references, so finer points of coloration are best treated as data sparse rather than asserted.
Habitat
Poecilia petenensis is a freshwater fish of the Central American lowlands, endemic to Guatemala. The IUCN assessment restricts the species to Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén department of northern Guatemala, while noting that the true range is uncertain: the fish may be present in Belize and Mexico, but records from outside Lake Petén Itzá and confusion with the congener P. kykesis make the picture difficult to resolve. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and non-migratory, occupying the open and near-bottom water of its lake habitat.
The species is tropical, with FishBase giving a preferred range of roughly 72–82 °F. As a molly-group livebearer it can be expected to favour the hard, alkaline, mineral-rich water typical of the karstic lakes of the Petén and to tolerate a degree of brackishness, though specific water-chemistry measurements for the wild population are not detailed in the consulted sources. Lake Petén Itzá itself is a large, deep limestone lake, and the confinement of a poorly known endemic to a single such basin is a recurring theme in the conservation literature on the region's fishes.
Feeding
The Peten molly is a low-trophic-level grazer. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 2.4, the value expected of a fish whose diet is dominated by algae, aufwuchs and detritus rather than animal prey — the herbivore-leaning omnivory characteristic of mollies generally. In the wild such fishes spend much of the day rasping the biofilm of algae, diatoms and associated micro-invertebrates from submerged surfaces.
In captivity the species would be managed as a typical sailfin molly: a herbivore-leaning omnivore that takes a vegetable- or algae-rich prepared diet supplemented with small live and frozen foods. A diet skewed toward plant and algal matter suits the fish's gut and grazing habit, and frequent small feedings match its near-constant browsing better than infrequent large meals. Species-specific dietary studies for P. petenensis are not available in the consulted sources, so this account leans on the well-established feeding biology of the molly group.
Mating
Reproduction in Poecilia petenensis is internal, as in all poeciliids. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male transfers sperm using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ built from modified rays of the anal fin, and the female retains the sperm and develops the embryos internally rather than laying eggs. This live-bearing strategy, shared across the family, removes the need for spawning sites or egg-guarding and lets the female carry her developing young with her.

A useful feature of poeciliid reproduction is female sperm storage: a single mating can supply sperm for several successive broods, so females can continue to produce young without re-mating. Breeding
Poecilia petenensis is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the embryos and gives birth to free-swimming fry, the hallmark of the livebearing poeciliids. Drawing on the molly group as a whole, gestation runs on the order of three to six weeks depending on temperature, and broods number in the tens of fry, with larger females producing larger broods. Females can deliver multiple successive broods from a single mating thanks to stored sperm. The newborn fry are fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately. Brood size and gestation length specific to P. petenensis are not recorded in the consulted sources — that level of detail is genuinely data sparse for this species — so the figures here describe the typical molly pattern rather than measured values for the Peten molly.
In the aquarium
Poecilia petenensis enters the aquarium trade as a sailfin-type molly, but species-specific husbandry information is thin; it is far less commonly kept than the familiar shop mollies and guppies, and most practical guidance is extrapolated from molly care in general. On that basis it should be managed as a hard-water livebearer: warm water in the 72–82 °F range per FishBase, hard and alkaline chemistry, scrupulous water quality, and tolerance of slightly brackish conditions, which many keepers find suits sailfin mollies well.
Given the marked size dimorphism — females reaching around 4.5 in — this is a larger livebearer than a guppy, and it needs correspondingly more swimming room and a group that allows females to escape persistent male attention; a female-skewed sex ratio reduces harassment of any single fish, as it does in related mollies. A vegetable- and algae-rich diet keeps the fish in condition. Because authoritative, species-level aquarium notes for P. petenensis are not available in the consulted sources, prospective keepers should treat it as a sailfin molly and prioritise stable, hard, well-oxygenated water.
Conservation
Poecilia petenensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 19 September 2019 and published in 2020 at global scope. The Data Deficient listing reflects genuine uncertainty rather than a judgement of safety: the species' true geographic range and its taxonomic boundary with the closely allied Poecilia kykesis are unresolved, and that uncertainty prevents any reliable estimate of extinction risk. Until the range and taxonomy are clarified, the fish cannot be placed in a threat category one way or the other.
The assessment does, however, flag pressures on the species' core habitat. If the fish is indeed largely confined to Lake Petén Itzá, then threats to that lake bear directly on it: land-use change and plantation agriculture in the surrounding catchment, increased sedimentation, agricultural pollution and runoff, and logging or wood harvesting. The magnitude of these pressures on petenensis specifically has not been quantified. A narrowly distributed lake endemic of uncertain limits, subject to catchment degradation and easily confused with a wider-ranging relative, is exactly the profile the Data Deficient category is meant to flag for further study — and the responsible reading is that the species warrants survey work and taxonomic resolution before any confident conservation verdict.
