Poecilia rositae is a small, narrow-range shortfin molly described only in 2004 from the upper Río Cahabón system of Guatemala — a single stretch of warm Central American freshwater roughly 7 mi south of the town of Lanquín, in Alta Verapaz. A member of the Poecilia (Mollienesia) mexicana subgroup, it is separated from its close relatives chiefly by fine details of fin-ray counts, body shape and the structure of the male gonopodium. Little-known in the aquarium hobby and assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, it is one of those quietly endemic livebearers whose entire known world is a few kilometres of a single river drainage.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia rositae was described in 2004 by Manfred Meyer, K. Schneider, A. C. Radda, B. Wilde and Manfred Schartl, in a paper published in Zoologische Abhandlungen (Dresden) under the title "A new species of Poecilia, subgenus Mollienesia, from Upper Rio Cahabon system, Guatemala, with remarks on the nomenclature of Mollienesia petenensis Günther, 1886." The work appeared in German and placed the new fish firmly within the shortfin mollies, the subgenus Mollienesia of the genus Poecilia, and specifically within the Poecilia (Mollienesia) mexicana subgroup. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, treats Poecilia rositae Meyer et al., 2004 as a valid species in the family Poeciliidae.

The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours," a reference to the variegated patterning typical of these livebearing toothcarps. The specific epithet rositae honours Mrs. Rosita Bonhaus of Melle, the long-term partner of the German aquarium-book publisher Hans-Albrecht Baensch, in recognition of her contribution to the production of the then-new atlas of livebearing fishes. The fish carries the English common name "Lanquín toothcarp," after the Guatemalan town near its type locality.

Within the mexicana subgroup, P. rositae is distinguished by a combination of meristic and structural characters rather than by any single dramatic feature. Its dorsal fin bears 10 soft rays (versus 11 in P. gracilis and 7–8 in P. sulphuraria), and the species can be told from relatives such as P. sulphuraria and P. mexicana by features of body pigmentation and gonopodial anatomy. The describing authors emphasised that it differs from other members of the group in its colouration and in the shape of its body and gonopodium.

Morphology

Poecilia rositae is a small molly with a fusiform, normally proportioned body. FishBase records a maximum length of about 2 in SL for measured specimens, consistent with the modest size typical of shortfin mollies in the mexicana subgroup. The meristic profile reported in the original description is detailed: 10 dorsal soft rays, 9 anal soft rays, 27–28 vertebrae, a longitudinal scale series of 28 (rarely 27 or 29), 13–14 predorsal scales, 16 caudal-peduncle scales, and 15 pectoral rays.

The diagnostic anatomy that separates P. rositae from its close relatives lies partly in the male gonopodium — the modified anal fin used in internal fertilisation. In this species the serrae on gonopodium ray 4p are described as massive, and the distal spine series of ray 3 is long; the distal membranous plate present in P. mexicana is absent in P. rositae. These gonopodial characters, together with fin-ray counts, are the kind of fine-grained features ichthyologists rely on to delimit species in a closely knit subgroup of otherwise similar-looking mollies.

Colour pattern also enters into the species' diagnosis, though detailed colour data are sparse in the available sources. Notably, females of P. rositae sometimes lack the rows of black spots along the body sides that are present in P. sulphuraria and P. mexicana — a useful field character within the mexicana subgroup. Beyond these points, full life-colour descriptions of the species are limited, and no image is currently held on FishBase.

Habitat

Poecilia rositae is a Central American endemic known only from the Río Cahabón system in Guatemala. The type locality lies in the upper Cahabón drainage, roughly 7 mi south of the town of Lanquín, in the department of Alta Verapaz. This places the species in the warm, tropical freshwaters of Guatemala's interior highlands, where the Cahabón flows through a karstic, limestone-rich landscape before eventually draining toward the Caribbean slope.

FishBase classifies the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical waters. As a shortfin molly of the mexicana group, it can be expected to favour the kind of slow to moderate, warm, often hard and alkaline waters typical of its relatives, though habitat-specific measurements (temperature, pH, depth) for P. rositae itself are not documented in the available sources, and are noted here as data sparse rather than guessed.

The defining feature of the species' distribution is its extreme narrowness. The fish appears to be restricted to a short reach of a single river system, making it a genuine narrow-range endemic. That restricted range is the central fact of both its biology and its conservation status: any degradation of habitat quality within the upper Cahabón has an outsized effect on a species that occurs nowhere else.

Feeding

Direct dietary studies of Poecilia rositae are not available, but FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.6, with a tendency toward omnivory at the lower end of the scale. This is consistent with the feeding ecology of shortfin mollies generally, which graze on a mixed diet rather than specialising as predators.

Like other Poecilia mollies, P. rositae can be expected to feed on algae and detritus, biofilm and aufwuchs scraped from surfaces, diatoms and other micro-algae, and small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the water column and substrate. Mollies in this group are typically efficient grazers of plant and algal matter, which the low trophic level reported here supports.

No captive feeding regime is documented specifically for this little-kept species. By analogy with related shortfin mollies, a varied diet weighted toward vegetable and algal content — supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrate foods — would suit it, but in the absence of husbandry records this remains inference from the genus rather than observation of P. rositae itself.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Poecilia rositae reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — the structure whose detailed anatomy (massive serrae on ray 4p, a long distal spine series on ray 3) helps diagnose the species. There are no nests, no external eggs, and no parental territory; reproduction is mediated entirely through the male's pursuit and insemination of females.

In shortfin mollies of the mexicana group, males court and pursue females and use the gonopodium to inseminate them internally, and females are generally capable of storing viable sperm, allowing successive broods to develop from a single mating. Specific courtship behaviour for P. rositae has not been documented, so any account of display and mate choice in this species is extrapolated from its relatives rather than recorded directly.

The gonopodial characters that distinguish P. rositae are more than taxonomic curiosities: in poeciliids the precise shape of the gonopodium is bound up with how sperm is delivered and, often, with reproductive isolation between closely related forms. That the describing authors leaned on gonopodium shape to separate this species from P. mexicana underlines how central the male intromittent organ is both to molly reproduction and to molly systematics.

Breeding

Poecilia rositae is a viviparous livebearer. After internal fertilisation, the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs — the reproductive mode that defines the New World livebearers. As in other Poecilia mollies, development is expected to be lecithotrophic with the matrotrophy typical of the genus; there is no documented evidence of placentotrophy or of superfetation (the carrying of overlapping broods at different developmental stages) in this particular species.

Quantitative breeding data for P. rositae are not given in the available sources. Brood size and gestation length are undocumented for the species, though by comparison with other shortfin mollies a gestation on the order of three to six weeks would be unsurprising. These figures are offered as genus-level expectation, not as measurements of P. rositae, and should be treated as data sparse.

The species' high biological resilience — FishBase estimates a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — points to the typical livebearer pattern of rapid maturation and steady recruitment when conditions allow. That reproductive capacity, however, plays out within an extremely small geographic range, so it offers little buffer against habitat loss: a fast-breeding fish confined to a few kilometres of one river remains highly vulnerable.

In the aquarium

Poecilia rositae is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby. It is a recently described, narrow-range endemic with no image on FishBase and no established body of husbandry literature, so there is no documented record of its requirements or behaviour in captivity. Any keeper encountering it would be working largely from first principles and from analogy with better-known shortfin mollies.

General shortfin-molly husbandry would be the natural starting point: warm, well-filtered freshwater that is hard and alkaline, plenty of algae and vegetable matter in the diet, and the population management that any prolific livebearer demands. As a small, peaceful molly it would presumably suit a species or community setup with similar fishes, but specific temperature, pH and tankmate guidance for P. rositae is not available and is noted here as data sparse.

For a fish this restricted in range and assessed as Endangered, the more important point than care detail is provenance. Should the species ever appear in the hobby, responsible keeping would mean sourcing captive-bred stock with clear origin information and never releasing it — or any livebearer — into local waters, where adaptable mollies can establish themselves all too readily.

Conservation

Poecilia rositae is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1ab(iii). This listing reflects the species' very small and restricted range — a single, narrow reach of the upper Río Cahabón system in Guatemala — combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. A species confined to one short stretch of one river is, by definition, exposed to threats that a more widespread fish could absorb.

The assessment was made on 4 February 2020 and is carried in the FishBase record (Ref. 130435) for the global Red List. The species has not been evaluated under CITES or CMS, and FishBase notes it as harmless to humans. Its low fishing vulnerability and high biological resilience offer little protection at the species level, because the limiting factor is not exploitation or slow reproduction but the sheer narrowness of where it lives.

For a narrow-range endemic of this kind, conservation ultimately depends on the integrity of its single drainage. Protecting water quality and habitat in the upper Cahabón system — and avoiding the introduction of competing or hybridising mollies — is the realistic path to keeping P. rositae from sliding further toward extinction. The fish's recent description, in 2004, is a reminder that the freshwater fauna of Central America still holds quietly endemic species whose conservation needs become apparent almost as soon as they are named.
