Poecilia salvatoris was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1907 from material collected in El Salvador, the country that gives the species its epithet. For much of the century that followed it was not treated as a species in its own right: the Central American shortfin molly Poecilia sphenops is a notoriously variable and widely distributed fish, and salvatoris was generally regarded as a local variant or junior synonym of it. Only relatively recently, using modern methods including DNA evidence, has the El Salvador fish been re-validated as a distinct, good species rather than a colour form of sphenops.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — recognises Poecilia salvatoris Regan, 1907, placing it in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers. FishBase assigns the species to the subgenus Mollienesia, the molly group within Poecilia, alongside the shortfin and sailfin mollies. The long history of confusion with Poecilia sphenops means that older aquarium and aquaculture literature referring to El Salvador or 'Yucatan' shortfin mollies may in fact concern this species, and care is needed when reading pre-revision sources.
The common name 'liberty molly' is a hobby coinage rather than a translation of the scientific name. It refers to the three-coloured dorsal fin of the male, whose red, white and blue banding reminded early keepers of the French tricolour and the flag of the United States — both symbols of liberty. The species first reached the aquarium hobby in 1935, when an orange-finned form said to come from 'Yucatan' was illustrated in colour by William Innes in the American aquarium literature.

Kept in a proper group they settle, and the aggression is defused — an under-stocked group is the usual cause of trouble.
