The short-finned molly is the everyday molly of the aquarium trade — the species behind the familiar jet-black "black molly" and a whole spectrum of speckled and orange aquarium forms. Native to fresh and brackish waters from Mexico south to Colombia, Poecilia sphenops is a hardy, adaptable live-bearing toothcarp that grazes algae as readily as it takes flake food. It is peaceful, prolific and forgiving, which is why it has been a community-tank staple for generations, even as it is frequently confused with its close relative the Atlantic molly, Poecilia mexicana.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia sphenops was described by the French zoologist Achille Valenciennes in 1846, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Poecilia sphenops Valenciennes, 1846 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Poecilia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers. It belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes and the subfamily Poeciliinae, the same lineage that contains the guppies, platies, swordtails and the other mollies.

The "molly" group within Poecilia has a tangled nomenclatural history, and P. sphenops in particular has long served as a catch-all name in the hobby for several superficially similar short-finned mollies. It is frequently confused with the Atlantic molly, Poecilia mexicana, and historically the name has been applied loosely to wild and domestic fish that may not all belong to a single biological species. Much of what the aquarium trade sells as the "black molly" or "common molly" descends from P. sphenops or its hybrids, so the names attached to ornamental stock should be read with caution.

The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, meaning varied or many-coloured — a reference to the variegated patterning of these fishes. The genus is large and has been repeatedly revised, but the short-finned molly itself is a long-established and familiar member of it.

Morphology

Poecilia sphenops is a small, stout-bodied livebearer. FishBase records a maximum size of about 3 in standard length, with a common length closer to 1.5 in; males mature at roughly 1.5 in. Wild fish are an unassuming silvery to olive-grey, often with rows of small dark speckles along the flanks, and the body is comparatively deep and laterally compressed in the typical poeciliid mould.

Like all poeciliids the species shows sexual dimorphism. Males are smaller and slimmer and carry the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, developing a darkened gravid area at the rear of the abdomen when carrying young. Unlike the sailfin mollies, P. sphenops is a "short-finned" molly: the dorsal fin is modest rather than the towering sail of P. latipinna or P. velifera.

Most aquarium mollies are domesticated forms rather than wild-type fish. Selective breeding has produced the all-black "black molly," the most familiar ornamental form, along with speckled, silver, gold and orange ("dalmatian" and "sunset") strains. These cultivated fish are often the product of crosses within the molly group, so their colour and finnage can be far removed from anything seen in the wild population.

Habitat

The short-finned molly is a Central and South American species, ranging from Mexico south to Colombia. FishBase places its distribution broadly between about 24°N and 1°S, and longitudes from roughly 101°W to 69°W. It is a benthopelagic, non-migratory fish of warm lowland waters.

P. sphenops is notably tolerant of water chemistry. It occupies both fresh and brackish water, and FishBase characterises its preferred conditions as hard and alkaline — pH around 7.5 to 8.2 and hardness from roughly 11 to 30 dH — in a tropical temperature band of about 64–82 °F. This euryhaline flexibility, the ability to move between fresh and salty water, is part of why mollies have a reputation as adaptable, hardy fish.

Its ecological breadth — coastal lagoons, streams, ditches, and brackish margins — together with its live-bearing reproduction has made the molly an easy fish to move around. Like several of its relatives it has been introduced beyond its native range through the aquarium trade and mosquito-control programmes, although it is the guppy rather than the molly that has become the more notorious global colonist.

Feeding

Poecilia sphenops is an omnivore with a strong leaning toward grazing on plant and algal matter; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0. In the wild, adults take worms, small crustaceans, insects and plant material, picking over surfaces and substrate as they feed.

In the aquarium the molly is undemanding. It readily grazes green algae from glass, rocks and plants — a useful trait in a planted community tank — and accepts dried foods such as flake and micro-pellets along with frozen and live items like Daphnia and brine shrimp. Hobby care references confirm it eats flake, frozen, freeze-dried and live foods without fuss.

Because so much of its natural feeding is grazing, a diet that includes a good share of vegetable or algal matter keeps the fish in better colour and condition than an all-protein regimen. Small, frequent feedings suit its near-constant browsing habit, and as with most small livebearers, overfeeding is a more common mistake than underfeeding.

Mating

Reproduction in Poecilia sphenops is internal and viviparous, the defining mode of the poeciliid livebearers. The male uses his gonopodium to transfer sperm directly to the female; fertilisation and embryonic development then occur inside her body, and she gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs.

Males court more or less continuously, pursuing and displaying to females, and there is no nest-building or paternal territory. As in other poeciliids, females can store viable sperm internally, so a single successful mating can fertilise more than one brood — a mechanism that lets a female keep producing young even when no male is present.

The molly is a peaceful, sociable fish, and in a mixed-sex group males will persistently attend to females. Keeping a ratio skewed toward females helps spread out male attention and reduces harassment of any single individual, a husbandry point shared across the livebearers.

Breeding

The short-finned molly is a prolific and easily bred livebearer. After internal fertilisation, the female carries the developing embryos for roughly four weeks — FishBase cites a gestation of about 28 days — and then gives birth to a brood of fully formed, free-swimming fry. Brood size is large for the fish's size: FishBase reports broods of about 20 to 150 young, with multiple broods possible across a year given the species' high reproductive resilience.

The newborn fry are miniature, independent fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As with other mollies and guppies the adults — including the mother — will readily eat fry, so breeders rely on dense planting, floating cover, or separation to raise good numbers. The fry grow quickly on finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp.

This combination of short gestation, large broods, stored sperm and rapid maturation makes the molly one of the easier aquarium fishes to breed, often reproducing in a community tank without any intervention. Population control, rather than coaxing the fish to spawn, tends to be the real management task.

In the aquarium

Poecilia sphenops is a classic community livebearer: hardy, peaceful and forgiving, which has kept the molly — and especially the black molly — a fixture of the trade for decades. It is an active fish best kept in a group, and FishBase suggests a minimum aquarium length of around 23.5 in to give it room. A ratio favouring females reduces the harassment that comes with persistent male courtship.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' preference for hard, alkaline conditions — broadly pH 7.5 to 8.2 and moderate to high hardness — at tropical temperatures in the low-to-high 20s Celsius. A persistent piece of hobby lore holds that mollies "need salt"; this is largely a myth. While P. sphenops tolerates brackish water well, salt is not required for healthy freshwater keeping. What matters is hard, mineral-rich, alkaline water; mollies kept in soft, acidic conditions tend to suffer, and that, rather than a lack of salt, is usually the underlying problem.

As a peaceful fish it suits a community of similarly even-tempered tankmates and breeds freely, so a keeper should plan for fry. Clean, stable, well-mineralised water and a varied, algae-inclusive diet are the keys to keeping it well.

Conservation

Poecilia sphenops is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List; the assessment was carried out on 22 March 2018. It is a widespread, abundant and highly adaptable species across its Central and South American range, and the assessment identifies no major range-wide threats.

The species is not listed on CITES or CMS. Its broad tolerance of habitat, hardness and salinity, together with its live-bearing fecundity, make it a resilient fish that copes with disturbed and degraded waters where less adaptable species struggle.

For the aquarist, the relevant conservation note is the same that applies to all hardy, prolific livebearers: an adaptable fish that breeds easily and tolerates a wide range of conditions can establish itself outside its native range if released. Unwanted mollies should never be put into local waterways — they should be rehomed instead.
